2.2 Froyo for the Captivate Discussion

i just looked over on the samsung website and under the cpativate i found an answer dated 30NOV2010.

"We are unable to speculate when/if this software revision might be available due to the fact that this might lead to inaccurate information and confusion. Should this become available, it will be posted on our website in the Samsung Download Center. Please feel free to check back with us periodically for updates."

O reallyyy??

According to the Samsung Galaxy S Support twitter, Froyo will be available on US Galaxy S phones later this month,

I'll believe it when I see it.

Over at the epic forum it's looking like the "official" release isn't really official. To me it's sounding like this a) test epic got sent an OTA b) this got leaked c) inside the code the url was found d) now everyone can download and update e) bugs found, major ones at that like the stock music player and gallery not working anymore, sprint denies there's an update f) speculation that epic users are being used as beta testers crop up. I know it's on googles servers but I'm having my doubts that it is the official release. Not everyone over there is experiencing the bugs but it seems to me quite a few are, granted it could just be because they are updating abnormally. I don't know, but my doubts have gone up a lot since last night. I'm still betting on december 15th release.

If it were a beta or release candidate build it should be hosted by Samsung (who does the testing), this was given by Samsung to Google to host, and is in the OTA bin on the server. Whether this DK28 is the version that gets pushed out or not, it is the update file that Samsung has given Google. On all previous phone where we have grabbed updates (whether early or just without waiting for our notifications) they have come from a url very similar to this one (http://android.clients.google.com/packages/ota/phoneID/path.updatefilename.zip),
and all leaked test builds etc were from hosting on HTC's site. Even for the Galaxy S's, test builds and leaks came from samfirmwares.com 's source page from Samsung, NOT from Google's servers...

If I were a bettin' man, I'd say this or this with a patch for the issues some are having is what will be pushed out. Maybe Sprint's appeared first because they were done with it first, and the rollout will be simultaneous as some bloggers have said- or maybe not.

Also keep in mind that those issues could just be because Samsung apparently has no clue about programming when it comes to Android. Every piece of software they have released has been buggy...

maybe sprint is just covering it up

Possibly, if so the final build num.ber will be like DK29 or DK30.

But I think it is more likely they will take another month and "fix"the bugs pointed out and number it like DK (or DL if in January) 32 + ...

Grrrr I'm getting sick and tired of waking up every day and checking this forum for news of an official release. The only thing that aggravates me more is youtube telling me the video I want to play isn't supported on mobile devices.

I want one touch batch updates.
I want flash.
I want my full hardware to be finally used.

That's really about it. If my phone is a tiny bit snappier then fine, but since getting the rom flashed by Samsung when it was in for the screen replacement it's performed nearly flawlessly. So I don't really feel like my phone lags or is unresponsive anymore.

Even though Gingerbread is now out I'm not that interested in it as it doesn't appear to bring any huge changes like Froyo does.

I'm tempted to flash to a custom rom leak but since I had problems that Samsung hopefully fixed, I'm still testing the phone's performance and really don't want to void my warranty, or worse yet, brick my phone considering that I've now got $362 invested into it.

No nukes for ya - but - you can always get a Tricorder, free in the Market - works great with both 2.1 and 2.2, and if you're into solar stuff, tap SOL, then tap the sun picture to see multiple views - should look fab on those SAMOLED screens. Tap the compass to see which GPS birds you've got.

And while I'm glad the exchange ended on a happy note - Da Rules is Da Rules.

However - The Lounge is a good place to question a lot of things. You might even try out http://androidforums.com/forum-games/1081-ban-person-above-you.html - it's on page 127 now.

Stay frosty.

I'm at work I wish I could have a frosty beer!
:D
Otherwise I wouldn't be posting here, I could care less if froyo comes tomorrow or next week. My phone does me good and I like it alot :D (secretlly cares ALOT :( )

played with the tricoder once but i thought it was a gimick. Looks like some of the stuff it does actually works. crazy...

Newest rumor is that the Captivate isn't getting updated. They're phasing it out in favor of the 1.2 ghz samsung coming in early 2011.

If that turns out to be the case, LAWSUIT! We have it in writing in several places, as well as video, where they have promised it.

Anyone who hasn't already done it should really just go flash a custom rom. I gave up waiting & flashed Phoenix 3.5 this morning & am now kicking myself for waiting so long. It really is worth it, & who knows if we'll ever get the official release at this rate...?

IMO, it can't be a lawsuit as such because there's no contract between you and them to provide that update.

As for the "in writing" sources, that's as binding as somebody in this forum writing "I think I'm gonna go out and get a Samsung model ABC phone tomorrow', and Samsung suing them because they never made the purchase.

Source?

We've heard all sorts of rumors over the months. Many of which conflict with each other, and have the credibility of bigfoot.

I've heard from reliable sources that Samsung is going to send terminators back in time to eliminate all the Captivate phones so they won't have to provide Froyo. It was easier than getting the ROM through AT&T QA.

after upgrading (manual by myself) to 2.2 it is like a new phone. I don't want to throw it at the wall. All that lag it had is gone plus all the features I wanted are there. The media hub store works and has a lot to movies and shows to buy or rent. It is a lot faster as well. Best new feature is the ability to make it a mobile hotspot and connect upto 5 devices. If this 2.3 thing is as big of a leap forward as 2.2 I would look at trading this phone it for a long time. Well till motorola atrix.

Is it legal for me to ask how you updated without an official release? I want those features!
