2.2 Froyo for the Captivate Discussion

Went to AT&T today to get a warranty exchange, both customer reps thought Froyo was already out. On the phone, the AT&T "Android Expert" said Samsung has been telling them every month "it'll be available this month" and it doesn't happen. She actually joked about how many phone calls they have gotten regarding Froyo.

That's not as bad as going to Target and just browse some phones (back when I was shopping for something to replace my iPhone) and have the rep tell you that the Captivate and the Windows 7 phones are 4G phones. Lmao

I can see that happening at Target, if it happened at AT&T It'd be a different story.

just flash it yourself.
the update will never come.

I finally flashed cognition....and am loving it.
my battery life seems to be much much much better and my gps is fixed.

just kidding the gps will never be fixed, but the battery life is great ಠ_ಠ

I finally flashed Cog this week. Let me tell, no official FW will go on my phone. This is just amazing. What makes it better is it's an actual Captivate Rom, not i9000.

How does that make it better? What i9000 roms have you flashed?

I flash Paragon RC3 (and i9000 rom) and I prefer it to Cognition (a Captivate rom) since it has my most long awaited feature, Bluetooth voice dialing, and many of the i9000 roms are 2.2.1.

This just might make AT&T get on the ball since T-Mobile seems to have a fire lit under their cabooses these days.

I really hope they do the update OTA. The update for the Vibrant is Kies only, unfortunately I have not been able to get my Captivate to connect to my x64 or x86 Win7 machine. Next I will try a VM of XP and see what happens.

I finally got kies to work on my x86 win 7 computer. It was kind of annoying, you would expect in this day and age that you can just install software and then connect the hardware and it would work, but when I did that with kies it didn't work.

Follow this guide to the letter: How Do I Update The Software On My AT&T SGH-i897 (Captivate) Phone To JH7 Through Kies Mini? .

It worked for me, make sure to do every weird little thing it says in exactly the order it tells you (and uninstall any version of kies you have now). As I said following that guide to the letter got it to work for me on my x86 machine, now hopefully if Froyo ever comes I'm good to go.

PS. I know the guide says it is for 32bit machines, but it worked for me on my 64.

It's a very smart move to update the US Galaxy S phones via Kies as T-Mobile has done. Without sending notifications to customers that an OTA update is available a very small percentage of the total Galaxy S owners will be aware that an update to Froyo is available (when all carriers release it). Customers that purchased their phones months ago have become accustomed to them as they are currently. Most users don't read forums like this one, and most probably don't even know what Froyo is.

I'd bet that the other three carriers will follow suit and update via Kies only. The less phones that are updated the less phone calls to customer service and less phones replaced due to bricking because customers screwed up the update procedure or the update itself is faulty or flakey - less hassle overall for the carriers and Samsung.

Those that are tech savvy Galaxy S owners and follow forums like this and are awaiting the update are likely to have computers that run the latest software versions - like Vista or Win 7 64 bit. Or maybe Macs. Gee - too bad Kies doesn't play nice with those computers and some more people may not be able to update - at least not conveniently.

Be assured that the carriers and Samsung are going to try and do this so that they inflict the least pain on themselves - that's Priority #1. Their concern about their customers - not much of a priority.

That's fine, they can do what they want - I have all the updating I need running the Serendipity ROM. I seriously don't see myself ever keeping a phone stock again.

I really hope the update isn't via KIES. I can't even install kies on to my computer. I downloaded the file from the samsung site, and once I get to the language selection, the window itself freezes and turns white. Nothing else is wrong with my computer at that time, and it happens EVERY SINGLE TIME without fail.

It really pisses me off. And on top of that, there was one time I installed KIES (finally) and my phone was detected by the computer, but not KEIS.

At that point, i just deleted everything that was even reminded me a kies, stupidest thing EVER. just push it through the air, no one would complain.

-Finally got KIES mini to work. Had to put it on a XP 32bit machine. It is still an abomination of a program.

Can you tell me if this is the correct sequence for upgrading Serendipity 4.1 to 4.2.1 please?

I'm currently running Serendipity 4.1 on my ATT Captivate.

1) Copy 4.1_to_4.2.zip to the phone's sd card
2) Reboot the phone into recovery mode
3) Scroll to "install zip from sd card" and use the power button to select
4) Scroll to "choose zip from sd card" and use the power button to select
5) Select the 4.1_to_4.2.zip file/rom and install it
6) Reboot

Thanks!

Yes, that's correct!

I can get kies mini to work on my windows 7 64 bit machine but for the life of my i cannot get the correct drivers for it to see my phone no matter what guide I follow or what I do even debugging mode. The thing that really pisses me off is that my girlfriend has the samsung vibrant (the galaxy s for t mobile) and all I have to do is to plug hers in and it automatically installs the drivers and there is no problem whatsoever.
