2.2 Froyo for the Captivate Discussion

Sigh...again with the judging of froyo based on a leaked beta build. No one has any idea what the actual release will be like; if I had to guess I'd say it will definitely be faster than the leak! Of course your 2.1 with hacks in place will perform better than a beta firmware! To think otherwise is absurd.

c'mon read my post. I was not comparing a hacked 2.1 to froyo. Froyo is not going to run as fast as my phone no matter what version you get. If you read it you would see that I was simply saying it is not a spike in performance at least at this point. my phone with 2.2 couldn't keep up with a Droid x running 2.1. I am completely aware that this is a beta but it is for a captivate, it is somewhat optimized for the phone. Lets be honest this phone is great but its not the fastest phone out there after you have it for a few months and plunged some Apps into it. I hope as much as anyone that I am wrong, but will not be let down if I am right.

The battery life is insanely good. It has been under heavy use (gaming, browsing) all day and it's only at 50%.

EDIT: All at maximum brightness!

You are getting good battery life. I seem to be getting a lot worse battery now not sure why... Hopefully will discharge a few times and get it back where it use to be....

2.2 is def a step in the right direction. It still has some improvements, and I think still more things added to it. Such as our phones still do not access all of there memory. Which in 2.2 the moved up the available memory would was suppose to allow us to access all 512mb.

Has the bluetooth stack been updated in the leaked Froyo? In particular, does a Wii remote now pair with the device?

I dont know if the standard "foyo leak" will or not but I am using the Cognition 2.2 that supposedly has a different Bluetooth stack and Wii remote still will not work :(

There is a device that has been in development for a while now called icontrolpad. Origionaly it was going to be for iPhone only, but last minute they decided to go bluetooth instead of the iPhone connector. It is basically a console type bluetooth controler designed for mobil phones. Since it is going to be bluetooth now they say it will be compatible with other phones, including Android. However, since Samsung decided they were going to do their own proprietary thing with the bluetooth, who knows if it will work on SGS phones... Here's hoping.

I even tried Zeemote, so if you see it and are thinking about it, dont. The controler "works" sort of but it is simular to the Nunchuck controler on the Wii and is really difficult to use as a controler for Emus.

I think the rumblings that the GPS issue is going to be addressed with the release of 2.2 is pretty accurate.

My GPS was almost nonfunctional prior to installing the 2.2 leak on my phone and now (while admittedly not perfect) it is at least functional.

Here's a example of how my GPS is reading currently.

Sounds like a bit of overreacting here...:)

They've not even approached the degree of arrogance that Steve Jobs demonstrated regarding the _real_ antenna issue on the iPhone 4. The proximity sensor issues and more.

Perhaps a simpler phone would suit you well. Android is a young up and coming platform that is bound to have bugs and other annoyances.

Rather than get all emotional, get a simple phone and you won't have any worries.

Good Luck

The thing is though, Apple did admit they made a mistake. Sure, they played the "well they do it too!" card, but hey, it's true. Not to mention (despite what you might say) the whole thing was overblown by people who did not own the phone (such as myself at the time). And they did fix the proximity sensor and all the little other bugs on time, like they said they would. Why anyone would compare Samsung and Apple is beyond me as these are too completely different events. Seems like someone was trying to pull a "well they do it too!" ;)

And, lets me honest, this is all Samsung, not Android. These bugs don't occur on other Android devices made by other people, just Samsung. They promised a fix, didn't really get that. They promised Froyo at the end of September, didn't get that. Essentially you're giving Samsung the right to keep doing this and saying it's OK buying their half-assed products and just taking it.

I agree with some of what you've said here but it's important to keep in mind that this is a leaked beta. It's not the final software so it's going to be buggy. If it was working fine we would have it OTA or through Kies.
On my phone I'm not getting the general lag I did with stock 2.1. Froyo Cog 2.2 is running just as fast as 2.1 with Voodoo was for me. I'm not talking about Quadrant, which I won't get into how bad a benchmark that is, I'm talking about usage and feel of the device. It's just as fast as Cog with Voodoo was for me.

you know i have to be a little bit of a hypocrite as much as I despise them but #3 worked for me. The first 2.2 I ran was cognition which did not play well for me, then I flashed the leak, got pissed and re-flashed 2.1 with OCLF. Right after my last post I was pouting for about 15 minutes and decided to give 2.2 (leak) another shot. This time I went through every motion and it works PERFECT. Generally no lag at all, not unless I am really beating it up, GPS lock has been at longest 30 seconds. Continuous reboots and toggling functions seem to have no effect on lock time. I have enabled the sensor in the GPS settings as to how much it does I do not know, but like I said GPS is great. Every other function has been perfect with the exception of the market giving me a FC one time after install but I have since been back in there for about three hours re-instralling apps and not a single issue. You are correct in saying that it does, seem as fast as voodoo. This is a huge sigh of relief for me, as far as I am concerned I will not even install the OTA until I get confirmations that all is well. Another plus is that I do not have to re-flash my phone for a while this poor thing has been flashed more times than a peeping tom.

To be fair, I don't think Samsung ever promised a date when Froyo would be available on the Captivate, just that it would be available. They have made statements about it being available in Oct for the international version but that's not the same as the Captivate.

Anyone has problem with contact group? 2.2 will sync all contact group in google but when I am in contact group click on the name then I would see an incorrect display contact...

Various quotes:

>>> Sigh...again with the judging of froyo based on a [Samsung]-leaked beta build. No one has any idea what the actual release will be like;

+1

>>> if I had to guess I'd say it will definitely be faster than the leak!

Most beta builds have debug code contained therein which tends to slow things down.

>>> I'd say that you can tell it's very close and that everyone always has some different issues because of different ways of installing it, not following the instructions, what other software they've installed, maybe they can't or wont read the options and instructions and on and on.

+1

Plus, as I've written before, some people aren't happy unless they aren't happy. Even if the phone was totally acceptable and operated as designed and promoted, someone somewhere would bitch that their morning coffee isn't as hot as it was before the update.

Excellent Post!

Here's my take on it ...

There are so many variables and hurdles when bringing any software OS, or update to an OS, to market that it's very difficult, if not impossible to predict the time line accurately. Especially when it's also going through an additional party, like the Carriers involved.

Me?

I'm really happy with the way my Captivate is running now that I have Eclair 2.1 optimized.

Also I'm still thinking about taking a pass and waiting till Gingerbread, then buying a new device with it preloaded. The pace of handset development is pretty exciting right now.

I was giving a serious look at the HTC Desire HD, until I saw that thus far it's not setup for the AT&T Frequencies, even though it is GSM.

Cheers... :)

Regarding the Calendar not defaulting to My Calendar...
Holy hell, I'm surprised there hasn't been more hootin' an' hollerin' over this!

I think we should be able to set what it should default to; and I think we should be able to set defaults for reminders too.

my battery is way worse with this. the other day i was only able to last 7 hours before the phone just shut off. and this was after i recalibrated the battery twice.

Hey guys I'm new to the forums. I have had a problem with my Captivate since the gps patch when I go to software update it says cant connect to at&t servers! It used to say no updates found. So I called samsung tech support and the guy was clueless he also said when I asked about froyo that it wasnt gonna be released till after the galaxy tab has been released! Do these people even know? He also said my update prob was because there was no updates available! I am worried that I wont be able to get the ota update to froyo since the software update cant connect to at&t's servers even at&t said they dont know about this issue. I have seen others on the forums with this same problem! Also if I have mini kies will I be able to get froyo update thru kies? Thanks for any help!

Not to derail this thread, but I was told by an AT&T employee (and it seems to match my personal experiences) that the AT&T update servers cannot handle the strain of everybody checking for updates during peek times, which may be why you can only check every 24 hours. I have noticed that I get the can't communicate errors when I check during normal business hours, but if I wait until the evening (around 9 pm est) I have no problem checking for updates. Give that a try since you are worried about not being able to get the (eventual) OTA froyo update. I've also found that it helps to have full bars and the 3G icon, with wireless turned off.

Insider tip: Froyo coming to Captivate and Vibrant around mid-October

It be far fetched to say this guy was lying when he said Mid-October for the Captivate and the Vibrant.

You really can't tell the difference between an official announcement from Samsung and an anonymous comment from an "Insider"? That great because my inside source told me you were going to give everyone on the forum $20 by the end of the week. You had better not miss your deadline otherwise some people on here might get cranky.

I talked to a level 3 samsung tech and he said the update to 2.1 from 1.6 was coming by the end of the first quarter of a year beginning with the number 2. And he said it would be brought to us by the letter G.

I spoke very briefly with a level 4 Samsung Tech Support Supervisor.

He coughed, laughed, then it sounded like he hit the floor.... radio silence followed... :)

FWIW:
In telecommunications, radio silence is a status in which all fixed or mobile radio stations in an area stop transmitting.

I don't know if anyone has noticed, but the best part of the leaked froyo for me has been that the samsung music player addeda horizontal mode. I use my Captivate for Navigation and now I don't have to switch it to vertical to get the full music player.
