2.3.340 is here! Post your experiences

If it's at all possible for you, try to look at times like this sort of the way I do (well, once all the steam has boiled off my my head anyways)... the more times we screw up our devices and have to fix them, the more we're learning about them. Ha, I know that's very little condolence at this point in time, but honestly I feel much more educated after all of the trials and tribulations I've gone through with this device than I ever did in all the years I spent on my Blackberry. It just worked for me all the time, so I never had to mess with it. And because it wasn't customizable at all, I was never able to screw it up.

Now this phone is a different story. You certainly CAN screw one of these up if you're not really sure of what you're doing. I know, because I have. But like I said, I feel like I know this phone a LOT better than I ever did my Blackberry. And somehow that makes me feel more in tune with it. When it's running really well, I feel a certain amount of accomplishment because I know part of the reason is me, not the people who put it together and shipped it out to me.

I have much to learn yet though. If this makes you feel any better (doubt it), I just goofed up my phone as well. As I was replying to your post I went to the screens I was describing to you on my phone so that I could accurately tell you what they looked like. Well in the process I accidentally hit the 'apply update from SD card' and REUPDATED my phone to 2.3.40. And in the process... that's right, you guessed it... I LOST ROOT AGAIN!!! AAARRRRRGGGGG... it's ok, you can laugh. I did.

So I had to open up Z4Root again, I hit the 'root' key, it spun for about 15 minutes and then froze up. So I did a battery pull, did it all over again, and now it's been spinning for 10 minutes. Who knows how long it's going to take to reroot?

But oh well, I feel 'smarter' now that I've screwed it up yet again. Smarter because now I know to erase the God Damn update from my SD card after I'm done updating so that I can't do dumb stuff like this again. ;)

I understand what you're saying. It's not that it's overly difficult to flash the phone, I probably just need to learn how to do a proper backup to quickly restore email, calendar, apps and all the custom settings. I apologize for the frustration, though. I need to keep in mind that every phone will have its frustrations.

Oh well -- I should have a fresh install of 2.3.340 by the time I'm done.

No apology needed my friend. Like I said, technology has made my blood boil on many occasions. I truely know where you're coming from.

For instance my ex-fiance and I used to work together at home on our computers that were linked to the same hard drives by way of the modem. Somehow her computer would always manage to disconnect itself from the hard drive at just the most perfect (sarcasm level 100) of times and I would have to drop what I was doing, and fix it for her because she didn't know anything beyond hitting the power button on a computer as far as how to work them.

And what really infuriated me was it always seemed to be a different scenario every time it happened. And since I'm no computer genius by any stretch, I would in turn have to call around to various people, who would then give me instructions that I didn't understand, or they would be instructions for Windows XP and we were running Windows 7 so it wouldn't work or any number of other things. It was never anything simple, it always took ridiculous amounts of time to solve, throwing us both off of our schedules, and sending me into this fury where I just wanted to take a baseball bat to every piece of electronics I could lay my hands on... you know that xerox scene in 'Office Space'? Oh yeah, I had visions of doing something similar on many occasions.

But, when both of our computers were up and running smoothly, well those were the times when we would ask ourselves where we would be today if not for technology. Because computers can do some incredible things... when they're working properly.

My experience with computers is the closest thing to Dr. Jeckal and Mr. Hyde that I've ever had in real life.

BTW I saw a post in the 'everything root' section that asked the same question for the problem you were having. Upgrading to 2.3.40 wasn't working because of their build.prop. It ended up being a problem with his screen density being set at 200. Was your screen density changed at all? Could have been the problem is so.

But I don't really know, I don't even really know much about build.prop or what it does?

LOL. I know the feeling. I don't even want to get into the worst experience I've had, which was light years beyond this.

On a good note, this is the first time all of my apps are being restored automatically without running Titanium. I'm looking at the app drawer now and watching my apps come back online one by one. I'll be curious to see if it misses anything.

I did not have the screen density changed in my build.prop file. Maybe the boot animation app altered it?

Just downloaded my X to 2.3.34 - I haven't noticed anything newer except for the Gmail upgrades which I think Gmail pushed out right before the system upgrade. I did see the Madden app in my applications folder. I won't play with that until I'm in range of a WIFI.

i need some recommendations for apps though....

I want a music player that I can control from the lock screen - any suggestions?

Can your lock screen wallpaper be different from your regular screen wallpaper? Is there an app for that?

Try widgetlocker...

Try widgetlocker...

I'll second the suggestion. I'm using widgetlocker and with a little creativity I've found that a lot of the more common things I do I can now do without even unlocking the phone, being able to put widgets on the lockscreen is a real plus.

Maybe it's just my perspective, but it seems there are a lot of really obvious tweaks that Motorola flat dropped the ball on in this OS. I can't believe how much I've added to the phone to give it what I consider some basic common sense usability. Updating to the new release as I type this, going to interesting to see if they've fixed much of that.

*ugh* also afraid to find out how much of my own tweaking I'm going to have to redo.

Since this update has rolled out I have noticed that when my phone is locked it is showing me the end of the backgroud photo instead of the part of the photo that is on my home screen...this happening to anyone else?

Just got the update here in Arizona and now my Dolphin HD browser does not work. Anyone else notice this? Stock browser works.

I updated yesterday night (SoCal)and my phone hasnt had a good connection ever since. I cant make phone calls, and sometimes its hard to get my sms or facebook! Im not liking this.

Try dialing *228 and selecting option 2 to update your PRL. Hopefully that will improve your signal quality

Just used system update to check if the new update was available and it was. Not sure if it went live today or not. Its downloading now. Is it available to anyone else?
