Thanks, I am aware of that procedure. I've been hanging on to the insane notion that an official fix would come any time now. What's really awesome is that I also have a Galaxy Tab 7 Plus and after a recently pushed update, it also seems to have crazy battery drain when asleep on a busy wifi network. YAY for Samsung!

That is more than likely a fluke. I find the only thing that works for me is to reset my phone every day when I take it off the charger. When they replaced your battery they reset your phone, so you are probably benefiting from that and not the new battery.

What do you mean by "resetting my phone"? Cold boot? warm boot?:o

The updater wont run unless you go into settings and check for an update. When it finds the 2.3.6 update it will let you postpone it three times but will then try and force you to upgrade unless you kill the service and then clear its data.

Thanks for that, I'll just never check for an update. Until I know ICS is available that is!
 
ok, here's something crazy.. I enabled power saving, which did pretty much the opposite. It also messed up how long my screen was staying on. it was going off too early, regardless of my setting. Then... after having power saving mode on for a half day, I disabled it and restarted. Now I'm getting awesome battery life again. I know, probably short lived but it was nice to see Android OS back to under 30% instead of 65%.

Pretty darn nutty. So nutty that I'm going to try it myself.

What's odd is that, allegedly, Power Saving mode doesn't kick in until a certain percentage of the battery is left (in my case, 10%). But maybe it's the constant monitoring of the battery that's killing the battery itself.
 
I had stock android 2.3.6. Battery was draining too fast every day, I tried everything. "Android OS" battery usage was too high. Even rooting and removing all crapware from samsung didn't help until I switch off Location services under Settings -> Location and security -> User wireless networks.

Battery now lasts 4x longer :-)

I don't know why but this also worked for me...even with wifi left on. I have a couple of apps that require the location to be on so I just turn it on for those apps. However, my battery life tripled...went two days and still had 40% battery left with moderate use.

How often to you have the phone synching your emails? Every minute? Every five minutes? That might be a pull on your battery. If U are able, cut the frequency it synch's looking for new msgs and respond via desktop.

I did this and really helped my battery alot.
 
I use active sync, switching to a timed sync is not a solution. Prior to 2.3.6 I was getting at least 36 hours on a full charge.

The Solution isn't to isn't to use the device less, it's to make the device stop wasting resources.
 
I downloaded CPU Spy, let it collect data over night and I found that the phone simply wouldn't go into deep sleep.

Your solutions are simple: go back to 2.3.4, wait for a fix or ICS, install a custom rom, deal with dumb workarounds.
 
When android OS would use up all my battery life, it would be because the google store was trying to update everything. Simply turning off Background data(found under "accounts and sync" in settings), would stop Android OS using so much battery. Every time you open the google store, you have to enable Background data, so don't forget to disable it again, after you've used the store to update/download apps. Hope this helps!
 
I have an Infuse and upgraded to Gingerbread this week. Battery drain problem just like everyone has been describing. I noticed WiFi continuously connecting/disconnecting every 30-60 sec on my home network. Never had that problem before. Only solution I've found is to switch to static IP. Going go test battery drain results tonight.
 
Samsung fixed their i9000 phones months ago, apparently even before this issue hit the i777. AT&T is the one to blame for the holdup and it's apparent you'll have to wait for ICS for any hope of an official fix.

For those willing to root and flash a ROM you can go back to getting 2-3 days of battery life.
 
I thought that I had a faulty battery so I figured I would do some research on better batteries before I replaced the stock Samsung battery, Model: EB-L1D7IBA (1850mAh). $39.00 USD Each.

I found plenty of the Extended life batteries (3800mAh), However they come with a replacement back door cover because they are thicker than the stock batteries and need the extra room. This would be OK if you don't have a case on your phone, "which to me is insanity" but you'll figure that out when you first drop your phone and you see the pretty design that gravity will leave on your touch screen. :eek:

But I happen to have a OTTER BOX Defender case on my phone so the extended battery will not fit. $24.95 USD Each.

Then I found a battery from Amazon.com that gave me (2250mAh) instead of the stock (1850mAh) while keeping the battery the same size as the stock battery. The cool thing is that it's currently selling for $9.74 USD each!

When I got the new batteries I followed the important pre-charging instructions and noticed that I was getting the same results as the stock battery I replaced. So I went on line and looked around for other users that were having this issue and found a few people that suggested to do a "Factory Restore" on the phone, So I backed my phone up as best as I could and restored it. Well, it WORKED! :D

Turns out that is all I needed to do. Anyways, I still do have the battery I bought from Amazon.com installed and it is working great! and for $9.74 USD Each you really can't beat it for an original fitting battery with an extra (400mAh).
