30 days approaching, who's returning

I guess I should check what I'm swyping ;)
Yeah if I get going too fast I just assume its getting me accurately but everyone once in awhile I'll send a text with a word completely wrong and I get a reply like  wth.
Still Im a swype exclusivist thesedays. Im probably not as fast as I am with a qwerty and two fingers versus one but its too fun not to use. I love being in public and having people stare. Surprising how many people are seeing swype for the first time when I show it too them on my SF. Although I guess most people aren't in the esoteric circle we are in

Well, we are coming up on 30 days since release. My phone is going back today. I just can't get over the

- poor call quality
- broken GPS

O well. The SF is otherwise a great phone. At the time of release the rumor was a fix was right around the corner for GPS. Still not here. I don't think there is a fix for the call quality as it seem related to problems with background noise and the only solution would be a noise cancelling mic.

I upgraded a line that had available to the SF. Tried it for 2 days and took it back. The BIG killer for me was the calendar. Got tired of everytime I made a new calendar entry having to manually tell it to put it into the gmail calendar. My Droid X does that automagically.

Well, I'm off to Wyoming. We'll see how the shaky signal areas in the badlands treat my phone. Didn't have a problem out there with the Droid X. Time to put the SF through some more paces!! I'll report when I get back!

Indeed. I look forward too hearing about coverage around there. I might be going thru there in awhile

Coverage was great in all the test areas. Placed several calls just to test it out, and it did very well. The phone has been excellent.

And now I have to return it. Right away. Probably waste my day tomorrow on this thing.

I've been a valiant defender and extremely positive of this excellent device. I've also been ridiculously careful with this device. Hasn't been dropped even once!!! And what thanks to I get? A TOUCH SCREEN THAT DOESN'T WORK.

I boxed my SF up after a weeks usage and went back to my Incredible - There's a lot to like about the SF, but too many things I didn't.
Maybe 2.2 will help - Not sure I will wait to find out as I will be putting mine up for sale this weekend in the forums classifieds.

Sorry to hear that you guys are having these troubles.

I must be blessed when it comes to phones. My Eris ran very well and my Fascinate runs even better with no problems so far.

I didn't have an Eris but double ditto. A few minor problems that were easily corrected with help from the kind folks on the forum. Call quality both incoming and outgoing seem better than LG EnV. Samsung i760, Samsung Omnia that were my previous phones. Folks I call say they can't tell it from landline. The echo problem was resolved by just holding the mic a little off line from the mouth or turning down volume a little. GPS works great for me with the tips on these and other forums.
Only thing on my agenda to get fixed now is the low volume in google navigation.

I am glad you're enjoying your samsung fascinate. My screen started working again but that was really weird, and scary.

After members here helped me figure out how I could get one early, I'm having issues. I'm thinking of returning, but maybe you can help me straighten some of them out.

1. Lets say I get a voice mail. I unlock my phone, dial up voice mail, listen, go to punch my code in, and the screen goes black. I hit the screen and nothing happens. I hit the power button, unlock the screen, make a quick tap, and the screen locks again and goes black before I can tap another number. I have to repeat all this again to type a second number. All the while you can hear the recording telling me to enter my password or it was not the correct password. This doesn't happen every time, but its happened a few.

2. Had some dropped calls and several calls where the person could hear me, but I couldn't hear them. I'm on the Verizon extended network. Hard to know if its the phone or the network. It (network) is not very strong here.

3. I don't like the 4 permanent (phone, contacts, messaging, apps) apps at the bottom. I haven't found a way to modify these or remove them. (I haven't looked hard)

4. GPS didn't work in Manhattan where I really needed it, but does fine here in NC. Not sure what's up with that. I travel a lot. I want it to work reliably everywhere.

5. Lastly is one you can't fix. No big manly hands here. Its hard to hold, and I've dropped it hard twice. I was hoping a 4" phone like the EVO was coming to Verizon, but doesn't look like it is soon. Just that 0.3" less I think would make a difference for me.

Any suggestions? Should I at least trade it for a different one to see if some of the problems go away (except my hands)? Thanks. Sorry this is long.

Ben

#1 - can't help with
#2 - I've had same issue but doesn't bother me that much and it's only happened a few times after 100+ calls which I don't think is bad.
#3 - Click on "Applications" app on bottom left of the permanent apps bar at bottom. Then you are in your apps section. Click on menu button on your Fascinate. Click "edit" on the left side ("list view" is on right). From there you can click and hold 3 of the 4 (can't change the home button) and pull them up off the bottom and drag others there (a little iPhone feel on this).
#4 - I haven't had any issues in NC either. Picks it up right away. Don't know about NYC (I'll tell you tomorrow when I fly in) but it works good in NJ but does take a few minutes to lock on (so did my Garmin on occasion though so I think it's fine).
#5 - Good luck with that. :( You wrote, "I was hoping a 4" phone like the EVO was coming to Verizon, but doesn't look like it is soon. Just that 0.3" less I think would make a difference for me." - the Fascinate is a 4" phone so you are already at .3" less. If you want another .3" less than the Fascinate you probably should look at the Droid 2 or the Incredible. I think the incredible is a very nice phone, owned the original Droid without issue. I love the bigger 4" screen on the Fascinate though.

I returned my Fascinate for the Droid Incredible. Let's see how this goes.

The Droid Inc over the Droid X??? Man, that seems like such a downgrade. The call quality between the Incredible and the Droid X is not even in the same ballpark. And I don't know how you're going to get much better reception on the Incredible than what you got on your Fascinate. Good luck, regardless.

If I had your signal issues I would've gone with the X and not looked back.

That's weird. I don't have this issue. I dial voicemail first. Then, if I put it up to my head, I simply wait for the message to start speaking. I pull it away from my ear, and the numberpad automatically comes on. I type in my password and the pound sign. Game over. My voicemail starts to playback and I listen normally. Each time I move it away from my head the number pad instantly comes back so I can replay, delete, etc.

If this isn't working properly for you I would take it into the store and make sure everything is setup right.

This was a HUGELY frustrating issue with my Eris. I would pull the phone away from my head, needing to reply to a message, delete a message, or replay it to get some critical information from a client, often on a time crunch. The screen would stay blank. The following is what would result based on the action I chose:

1. I hit the volume buttons = volume goes up/down but screen stays blank

2. I hit the send button = either nothing would happen or it would try to call another number, often the same number I'm already calling via a conference call. Usually the screen would still stay blank and I'd have no idea what the hell my phone was doing

3. I push the trackball = this worked at first. Then it would work about 50% of the time. Then it stopped working altogether on all calls, regardless of settings or restarting the phone, etc.

4. I push the power/end button = it would hang up

PIECE OF CRAP. This issue plagued two of the four Eris phones I've had. I haven't had a single issue to date with the Fascinate. I LOVE how pushing the power/screen on button is completely unrelated to hanging up or dialing calls. ZERO danger of accidentally hanging up unless the screen is on and ready for your input. I love the dialer on the Fascinate, and it's one of my favorite features of the phone. I even prefer it over the Droid X dialer. If you are having issues with one of the BEST dialers on any phone I've ever personally used, there's got to be something the phone is doing wrong, or something you perhaps don't have set quite the way you want it.

2. Had some dropped calls and several calls where the person could hear me, but I couldn't hear them. I'm on the Verizon extended network. Hard to know if its the phone or the network. It (network) is not very strong here.

Tough call. While I've been in Wyoming I finally got the chance to give my Fascinate the "Eagle Pass Test." It passed just fine without dropping a single call. Making calls in the really crappy reception at my dad's house has also been surprisingly successful. The signal and call quality continue to perform well for me on this phone.

3. I don't like the 4 permanent (phone, contacts, messaging, apps) apps at the bottom. I haven't found a way to modify these or remove them. (I haven't looked hard)

Answered by the other member. Although I would suggest Launcher Pro if you don't want to root. They have a free version, and it works great on this phone. Super fast, easy to use, and extremely customizable.

4. GPS didn't work in Manhattan where I really needed it, but does fine here in NC. Not sure what's up with that. I travel a lot. I want it to work reliably everywhere.

Only tested it in three states so far, and it's worked well in all states. Locks on fast, consistently, and accurate. I hate that the GPS is such a mixed bag for people. Anand did a good GPS signal strength test on this phone, and overall, it gets typically one satellite lock less than the competitor. But when the competitor has 9 sats locked and the Fascinate has 8, it should still have plenty for a speedy, accurate lock.

5. Lastly is one you can't fix. No big manly hands here. Its hard to hold, and I've dropped it hard twice. I was hoping a 4" phone like the EVO was coming to Verizon, but doesn't look like it is soon. Just that 0.3" less I think would make a difference for me.

Get a rubber skin for it. There are cheap ones online, and in the store they have them so you can try it out. I had one on mine for a while, and it worked. Made the thing stop slide-proof on my dash board, and gave me a lot better grip in the hand. I returned it because it added too much thickness, but it might be a tradeoff you're willing to make to get a better grip on your phone, and protect it in case you do drop it again.

Any suggestions? Should I at least trade it for a different one to see if some of the problems go away (except my hands)? Thanks. Sorry this is long.

I would exchange your hands in for some different ones!!

Jk! :D

Whoa! And this is helpful to him HOW???

Actually I am back to my Alias. X is to big. Incredible is nice but I have heard bad things about batter life, a priority for me. I'm patient. The Fascinate is close to what I want/need to be in the smartphone market. There are new phones coming out constantly and they are only getting better.
lol you traded a Fascinate for an Alias??

Going on week one with my Fascinate. Call quality is great. Although from pas experience I called *611 as soon as I got it and asked them to guide me into the hidden menus and tell me what my tower and freq settings were supposed to be. One of the values was not right so I changed it to what it was supposed to be and I have not had ANY issues in call quality or side tone.

10 days here and very happy with my SF.
Once I root it I'm sure I will really be happy.

My wife got her X a few days before me.
Nice phone but for some reason I like the SF better.

Haven't yet decided if I'm keeping this phone. I have about 2 weeks left to make a decision.

The biggest drawback I've found so far is the size - this phone is huge! This was my main concern before I even bought it but I decided to give it a try anyway. Without a case/skin it's so slippery I feel like I'm going to drop it so I purchased the verizon silicone case. I like it - but it makes the phone so much thicker. I'm thinking of trying some sort of skin or something before I make any final decisions.

I don't use GPS so I can't speak to that issue. Call quality is not great but not awful for me either. I don't do a ton of talking on the phone but if I did I could see how that would be a deal killer. The phone part is critical for me though as I have a son with some health issues and I need to have the phone on me at all times, ie in a pocket - rather than my purse. I have gotten a few calls/texts where I didn't feel the vibe - even in my pocket. This was also an issue with my Eris - what an awful device that was :(

Because size is one of my biggest criteria, the Droid X is not an option for me. And, because I hated Sense so much on my Eris the Incredible is not a good fit either. I'm stuck trying to decide if I should keep this device or get an iPhone if/when it comes to Verizon. Not an Apple fangirl or anything but the hardware on that device is just about perfect. I have also been trying to research any other upcoming Verizon Android devices but it looks like they're just getting bigger and the smaller ones are weak on performance. :(

Such a dilemma....

I can see what your saying about the phone slipping out of your hands. I like keeping my phone in my front pant pocket and it typically slides out when I sit down. Would hate to see it on the ground outside my car one day when I drive away.

#2 - I've had same issue but doesn't bother me that much and it's only happened a few times after 100+ calls which I don't think is bad.
The call issues have happened more. I took the phone in today to see what they could do. He told me he "pushed" the new software to it and for me to see how that did. If I have anymore problems he will replace it. I didn't think I had sound quality issues before, (When the person I was calling could actually hear me) but now it sounds really clear.

Thanks a zillion. That really fixed one of my main issues.

I mentioned this to the guy today too. He told me that while I was in NYC maybe I should have done a *228 program. I had thought about that, but it doesn't seem to make sense. The GPS system should be independent of my phone tower updates. It doesn't seem like they should have anything to do with each other. I'm not a power user of these things though, so I don't question too much.

#5 - Good luck with that. :( You wrote, "I was hoping a 4" phone like the EVO was coming to Verizon, but doesn't look like it is soon. Mine has hit the pavement hard twice. The phone is slick and big.

I looked at the Incredible while I was in the store. Seems like the phone is a lot smaller, but that the screen is not that much smaller. I know that seems crazy, but that's the way it looked.

Thanks for the help to both of you and SirKronan

@Gink: Have you considered a skin for grip instead of an actual case? Not much help if you drop it, but it does make it a lot grippy-er.

lol you traded a Fascinate for an Alias??

I went back to my Alias that I have had for some time. I certainly didn't pay for or waste an upgrade on an Alias. That being said, its a nice non-smart phone and the call quality is much better then the SF. Haven't had any complaints from people on the other end since I switched back and I had a lot with the SF.

Fair enough. Need to change your Devices now though ;)
