3dEvo: Pre-release miscellany

Sprint is doing what they planned on doing, which is tease us until we all can't take it anymore. I am willing to bet that this phone will infact be released in June. Anything passed that and they may as well not release it at all. There are too many signs, there was a E3D(shooter) rom leak a week or two ago then there was the leak of the final RUU just yesterday. There is no way that you will have a final RUU and the phone not be released for another month or two, also how can there be software issues at this point if the RUU is final? Then there are of course all the pre-order stuff thats been happening and the radioshack leak that has the pricing. Also I am quite positive that this phone has already gone through the fcc process, it just hasn't been made public yet. Things are way to quiet than what they need to be so something big is coming soon. And when I say soon I am saying tomorrow on Oprah's last episode is when it will be announced. Of course I am just speculating but if I was a gambling man(which I am) I would be betting that the released date will be announced tomorrow.

I was thinking about this last night and what better way for Opera to go out than to announce the Evo 3D and then give everyone in the audience a free Evo 3D.

I get the feeling that Sprint is totally ready to announce the phones, but HTC is not quite production-ready... So Sprint is just waiting for HTC to green-light the phone.

Come on everyone, lets have some faith here. Lets be real, this phone is coming out in a few weeks(early to mid june). This phone has already passed the fcc, it just hasn't been made public yet. Everything will be just fine and by this time next month we all will be rocking custom roms on our E3D's. So lets all say it together "WOOOSAHHH".

Umm - doesn't FCC leak = not FCC announcement = leaked info?

Doesn't seem right to place stock in the _timing_ of leaks if above is true.

Actually, FCC "leaks" are not actually leaks. Whenever one of the tech sites report that a certain product has passed FCC, they are not reporting a leak, rather they have sifted through the FCC's public information and located the item they are searching for. The EVO 4g was first reported to have passed the FCC on May 7th, a couple of days before the release date was announced. From that standpoint, I dont think we should worry too much about it if we havent seen it as it doesnt appear to take multiple weeks from that point. He makes a solid point regarding the FCC information though in terms of another step. I'll have to look this up online and see more about how the FCC reveals information to see if there would be times where they would approve something but conceal it. Muffinman, you said it has been approved. Did you read this somewhere already?

The blogs I've read doesn't indicate they sifted through anything - in fact to do actual research and then reporting would astound me.

The leaks I've read have always been of the form, we got a tip that...

Last I tried to access FCC records, they were restricted to recognized logins for this info. Pre-release of info could affect stocks - things don't get public until a certain point is reached in the approval, as I recall - and even that I'm not sure of.

And I get FCC, public trust, yadda yadda - but this is the same FCC who has yet to make the exact dialog that happened behind closed doors with Google and Verizon on net neutrality.

You know interestingly enough when I called Sprint to get my override the girl I talked to asked me if I knew when the phone was going to be released....it seemed a little odd and I just told her that I felt pretty good about it being sometime in June. She kind of agreed with me and did the typical line of, "it will be this summer" blah blah blah. Anyways, I wonder if Sprint is making their reps ask about the date to gauge what people are expecting. I mean why would she ask me if I knew if they don't know? Could of just been innocent but it seemed rather odd.

hmmm, like I said, I havent researched it thoroughly, but I was just reading an article on a certain website that I wont mention because I dont know what the rules on the forum are regarding posting links in posts, and they pretty much said that they sort through 100s of FCC documents each week! That got me thinking, so when I searched it online, it seemed like most sites were reporting it as factual based upon documentation.

Also, for the EVO 4g, the FCC approved the phone on 4/27/2010, but as stated above, it was first being reported on 5/7, so the EVO 3D could and may very well already be approved, but we just havent seen the documentation yet. If I have time (which I probably wont), I will look at the other phones I mentioned above to see when they were approved by FCC compared to the other dates. That could help us out as well.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't HTC and/or Sprint (or any other OEM/Carrier) request that all of the info on a specific device be confidential until a specific time? I'm pretty sure there have been many phones that don't show up on the FCC site as passed until they are released and then the date that passed was weeks earlier.

I believe that every Friday is when they update the site with things that have passed certification, but once again, I might be wrong

That is a bit strange, but maybe she just REALLY wants one too :-p

You're right. I just read several different articles online where manufacturers have requested for their product to remain confidential. Blackberry did this on the playbook. So, it's definitely possible that it has been approved, and we dont know about it yet. At the same time, I think the point of keeping the FCC approval confidential is to make sure that certain information isnt released ahead of the manufacturer/carrier announcements and schedule. With that being said, we pretty much know all of the specs about the device, so I am not sure what they would gain from keeping it confidential.

okay, I was just reading on the EVO 4g, and it was approved through the FCC back in February but the documents were requested to remain confidential for 60 days. They were approved to be released in late April and were available in May which was when they were reported by several sites. With that being said and after researching it, I am not at all nervous about hearing nothing regarding FCC approval, as there is little chance that it hasnt been approved by this point. For the pre, it was approved back in February as well, but Palm requested confidentiality for 180 days on the device. The confidentiality was kept until just prior to the release. I attached the confidentiality request for the pre in case anyone feels froggy and wants to look at it.

There is a way to search the FCC website. But we would need the FCC ID# for the Evo 3D.

I am guessing no one has that info which is why we dont have any FCC information. There can also be a "letter of Confidentiality" so FCC doesnt release anything.

Now here is the FCC link to the original EVO. You can see the EVO FCC# is
NM8PC36100.
Now if you read the Confidentiality Letter for the EVO 4G it does say its a "short term request". I think the FCC can only hold it under wraps for a certain period of time.
Also something else to note is that HTC and NOT Sprint filed the FCC papers.
For all we know there might be a delay on HTC part and Sprint cant do anything about it.

LOL you beat me to it. Good post

This makes a good deal of sense to me. The sensation is a GSM phone and it seems that HTC typically releases phones with the GSM variant of the qualcomm SOC first (msm8260), then follows up with the CDMA version (msm8660). I'm guessing they focus on the GSM phones first since that is a larger market (globably)... but that's purely speculation.

And it looks like NM8 stands for HTC at the FCC, so when we see NM8PG86100 in an FCC filing, then it has passed.

As of right now, nothing comes up

It might of passed already. The reason we see nothing when we search is because of the Confidentiality Letter.

Right, I was just seeing if I (or maybe someone with a better knowledge of the FCC site) could dig anything up

One interesting thing I found, was that 96 things have passed by HTC so far this year

Just to set a few things very crooked.

1.) You don't need the fcc number of the device to search for it.

Go here.
https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/GenericSearch.cfm

In grantee code type in "nm8" without the quotes.

In Frequency Range in MHz: "2501.0 to 2685.0" -make sure exact match is checked.

This will pull up all of the wimax devices made by htc with an fcc code.

2.) Htc evo 4g was posted on 5/07/2010, it was submitted on Feb. 23, 2010. It was tested on Feb 26 to about Mar. 15, 2010 and issued on march 20, 2010 for most of the tests.

You can request fcc findings be held confidential for any period of time, rarely longer then 45 days after public release.

Because there is no formal fcc announce means really nothing. The device in finished hardware form had to be sitting on the fcc before march. Only a failure of the device with the fcc test, which rarely happens, would cause a setback.

The htc evo 3d has passed the fcc, or they would not even be talking about it.
