Root 4.54.651.1- unrevoked - firmware too new?

so, I've spent about 3 hours googling etc and finally tried the unrevoked 3.32 (for my 2.3.3, kernal 2.6.35.10 and build 4.54.651.1) only to get the 'too new message'.
so first noob question, the 4.54.651.1, is what is known as gingerbread?
and if so I can get it rooted with the link from another post known as ' ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition'??
There is a fair amount going there so after all the false starts and fuzzy info out there in general I just want to be as sure as I can, I have to say to bad I didn't find this forum earlier, seems a lot more sane here

if the answers above are yes yes, then I have a specific question, for step 12,
12.find the superuser file and flash it., how do you do this flash? I did couple of flashes on mp3 players but they were .bin files not .zip, that seems weird

The Rooting for Dummies Guide is the Only Place to Start.(Not Really but highly recommended around here) May want to read it a few times before actually rooting.

To flash you will need to be rooted and have a Recovery Installed. You will flash from the recovery. If using Amon RA (Highly Recomended) you will see a Flash From SD Card.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!
yes you can root software version 4.54 which is the security ota that was pushed out recently. it is gingerbread. and you need to use the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html to get you rooted if that is what you have on your phone right now. unrevoked was for froyo. with gingerbread you need to use revolutionary to get you rooted.

amd yes this forum is a one of its kind. the best site on the net. so please feel free to ask questions when you are here.

the superuser file is something that gives you and your apps access to the system partitions so that you can add or subtract anything to your phone. but you need to flash this with a recovery. recovery is where the magic happens. but first we need to get you rooted before we can discuss more about recoveries.

start with the guide and read it from top to bottom before you try to root your phone.

and again please feel free to ask questions.
 
New here myself. Like these guys said....I was in your shoes and then found their guide here and was rooted within about 20 minutes...Follow the instructions exactly on their guide and you will have no issues.
 
I was also in your shoes not too long ago. I found the rooting for dummies guide and figured I'd get everything downloaded and set up in case I ever wanted to root. I just started following the guide and before I knew it I was actually done with the process and had a rooted phone. It was very easy and I don't regret a thing.
 
I'm stuck at 'waiting for device' did everything, including the optionals in the guide, tried all the stuff in another waiting post???
I lost the my backup app when erasing and formatting the sd card so hopefully I can reinstall and recover from where that was saved on my pc.
In devices, it shows up as f: an htc portable device with ms driver. when running the htcDriver.....007 it just flashes with no success msg, so not sure that driver install has actually worked. it does not connect anymore as a disk drive if I select that.:(

yeah you were supposed to back the card up onto your computer before doing that.

do you have usb debugging on in your phone? make sure that it is on. also make sure that your anti virus programs re turned off. uninstall htc sync and even its drivers on your computer. you also need to install the driver found in the revolutionary site. as longs as you have the driver installed you should be ok. it will not give you a message that it has installed successfully. just make sure that it is. and also you want to set your phone on charge anyways when using revolutionary.

Follow ocn's advice. Read and reread the gingerbread for dummies guide and then follow it step by step, ensuring you dont miss anything.
 
I have been trying to root with revolutionary every think works tell i get to the waiting for fast boot it has been on this for an hour any help.

Did you not turn fast boot off? Can pull the battery and try rebooting again.

Or are you talking about fast boot in the HBOOT?
 
ok 2 things,
device driver still has google drivers for 'android phone', not the htc, see attachment. shouldn't running the htc...007.exe replace the goog drivers?
also the drivers, for in my case H:\, for portable devices is ms drivers

the other thing is how to get the su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip into root? I assume root is the usual '/' ? the file manager I'm using, astro, shows the structure I've seen before on linux, unix, with dirs such as config, etc, root, sbin, sbin, all directly under '/' and so on.
however, when attached as a disk drive to the pc, see attachment, none of those folders showing in win explorer show up anywhere in astro? I've used asto search starting at / and they just are not found.
so I copied su-..... to some folder showing on the f:, like dcim, just to choose any one, but after the copy, astro does not find it, (so once found I can copy to / where its supposed to be)
so how to translate or work with the windows view ( and access) of the htc vs the view (and access) provided by astro (or I assume any other file manager)

Yes i turned off fast boot the revolutionary program says root aquirded then sending to caroline then it says waiting for fast boot and my phone goes into hboot and nothing else happens

my phone did this as well, but check your hboot and also see if you have s-on or off. my phone did that and i checked and my hboot changed and i had s-off, just no recovery. do you have htc sync uninstalled as well as the driver that comes with it? you may also want to try it on another computer.

what is your hboot?

it took me awhile for revolutionary to work for me. at least you got past the beta key part. it took me forever getting past that step. have you done a factory reset on your phone? also like i said, you might want to try a different computer as well.

so, everybody remember me? stuck at 'waiting for device'
I have solved problem of getting su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip onto the card root, /sdcard, btw rxpert, sdcard, does not show on the win explorer for my htc, it was a 2 step process, first copy it to the DCIM folder and then copy it to /sdcard with astro.
I HAVE CHECKED AND DBLE CHECKED, have done all the steps from the guide including options and other things in another post for waiting for device, and still stuck. is there some way to check if the drivers from HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe are installed? what are their names? are they supposed to be in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\?
see my earlier post with pics of my disk drive drivers and win xplorer
fast boot is off, debugging on, charge only, no htc sync or other, all virus, firewall etc is off,
 
ok finally, success, I'm s-off, installed the super user and did a backup. I connected usb to disk drive so I had the driver info (goog) available in devices, from there, I unistalled the goog drivers, and ran the htc .exe driver install, then took out battery and rebooted, and then the htc drivers were in finally there, evidently revolutionary needs that for sure.
so guess you have to do that process if some other drivers like the goog are already installed to allow the htc set to take effect.
thanks for all the help and looking fwd to installing the tether now that I'm rooted.
will be making another post about the 'recovery backups

Glad it worked! I made the stupid mistake after I installed Cyanogen of slicking my SD card...bye bye backup! Oh well. Made a backup of Cyanogen so at least something is backed up. Anyone ever have issues with the bluetooth disconnecting? I have Microsoft Sync in my car and it will drop. I have noticed if I initiate a reconnect from the phone it tends to work but if I do it from the car it drops again. Probably stupid Microsoft...
 
I finally got all the drivers installed correctly, and UnRevoked keeps failing the root, error : is firmware too new ? what do i do now ? Ive rebooted my phone, clear storage, Tried it again in diskdrive but no lucko. PLEASE HELP :/

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what is your hboot? power off (make sure that fastboot is unchecked. settings/apps/uncheck fastboot) then press and hold power+vol down. your hboot version should beat the top of the screen.

if your hboot is 2.15 or 2.16 then you need to use revolutionary to root you. please read this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html

if your hboot is hboot 2.10 or less then unrevoked should work, but my guess is that you will need revolutionary to gain root. i would delete the drivers you just installed and then follow the guide.
