Root 4G issues.....

flyjbaker

Android Expert
I do not live in a 4G area(although I think we are in an area slated to get 4g soon) so this hasn't really bothered me. I do travel a lot though. If I look in the setting page under wireless networks and with 4g selected on, it goes in a continuous loop of scanning.....obtaining IP address.....connecting and then immediately disconnecting.... And it will keep cycling like this endlessly.

I first noticed this in Hawaii which has excellent coverage of both 4g and 3g. I called. I had been there a week earlier and it worked fine. I called Sprint CS and they said that they had had a report on or about the time I noticed this. Okay, cool, it is not my equipment. Well then I went to Cleveland....same thing happenened. I am now in Newark....same thing happened(you can tell who I fly for...lol). SO obviously, it IS my equipment.

I have run a terminal to check wimax keys and they are still there. The only thing I can think of that I drastically changed from the time it was working to not working is the kernel....that s about when I switched to the SBC kernel....and I seriously doubt that is the cause but I honestly don't know. I was on Myns RLS4 then and changed over to RLS5 and now on Azraels...same deal with all ROMS and kernel combos. And wimax keys are still there reference the terminal.

Any Ideas???? Since I don't live in 4g this doesn't bother me tat much. But since I do spend time in 4g locations, it would be nice to have it.

PS...I will say that the 3g near the Newark airport is damn fast. Haven't run a speed test but it loads pages almost cable quick!!!

Well, let's see. Did you update the wimax radio between RSL4 and RLS5? The kernel *could* cause an issue. If nothing else, a bad flash can cause random problems. Start by maybe reflashing the kernel or flash a different one. Also, if you did update your wimax radio, did you remember to update your profile after updating? It's been known to not work right if you don't. One last thing - can you run wimax_mtd from the command line? Open the terminal, get su, and type that command. It will give you your wimax version, wimax mac, and run through some tests. Also, if you updated the radio, verify that the mac address in the output from wimax_mtd matches what it should be (I think it's listed under the battery somewhere).

I experienced the same issue when switching to Myn's rsl4 and then on rsl5

I was never able to pinpoint the exact cause and would just continue to hit the 4g on until it would stick.

I have recently unrooted my phone, gone through OTA updates via the check software option and then rooted again to try and fix a slew of minor issues I was having.

I am still on the stock OTA and kernel HTC 15 ...I will go out and see what 4g does (it only works outside lol)

Sounds to me like an app is causing the issue. I bet if you flashed the rom and kernel but did not install any apps it would work.

The most likely culprit is switchpro. If you have that installed try deleting it or going into the application settings and clearing data.

Bomb, It has behaved this way on numerous different kernels with numerous different ROMS...I always practice "safe flashing"...meaning no shortcuts. The mac address on the wimax_mtd matches the mac address under the battery. Of course that terminal command brings up a bunch of other stuff....most of which say "PASS" and no "FAIL"s in there.

Got it. I figured you'd gone through all that, but it never hurts to make sure :). Have you tried updating profile again? Even if you already did, maybe it will help. This seems to be happening to a lot of people, lately, and it seems to be caused by different things.

I doubt this is caused by something like switchpro, but it couldn't hurt to remove any 4g widgets you may have, and try again.

stock:rooted

4g via toggle and settings turns on just fine...

turning on
scanning
connecting to sprint
obtaining ip address

then...amazingly...I have never had 4g download speeds like this. I ran several tests and speeds came back consitant. oddly most of which came back with the -0/-0 you see in the results there.

I don't have Switchpro installed. I don't think it is an app since I have had this problem in many different configurations....although I have not tried a fully wiped configuration. If I get the time, I will do a full wipe and then try it and see what happens.

And thank y'all for your input. If you think of something else, please let me know. I will let ya know if a full wipe does the trick. I probably won't get around to that for a bit.

I've seen other cases where a full wipe has fixed 4g issues when all else looked fine. Somebody else in the rooting for dummies thread just did the same, and it worked. Maybe that's the answer. What a pain...

just do it! it couldn't possible be worse than unroot (don't get me started on what a fiasco that was) stock ruu, re root, and then staying stock until you figure out why you had to do all that to begin with!!!! ! :p

Well get this....I wipe and then reboot....and now a bootloop...hahahaha!!!

I thought I could just wipe the ROM I was on....and reboot into that same ROM after wiping???...No???

I never Nandroided Azrael so now I am restoring back into Myns....Restore went fine...I guess I could wipe and then reflash Azrael.....

So you think I should try a wiped stock ROM? The only reason why I don't think that is necessary is I was running custom ROM with working 4g.....

see this is where I am ...until I can break down these roms and see what these guys are changing vs what is in the stock rom...I can't answer that :(

Oh well....after wiping and then a bootloop and then restoring back to Myns and then siping and reflashing Azrael....it still doesn't work on a clean version of Azrael.

So Mr. Ed, were you successful in getting everything straightened out?

technically yes. I am not flashing any new roms or kernels until I finish my playing though.

end result as it stands right now is
current everything from htc, rooted, with all of my root apps.

only real drawback has been the bloat..and maybe some battery life...though my phone drained extremely fast to 50% over...it has really slowed (over the past 1-1/2 hours it has only drained 3%)

wait..scratch that..my phone has been unplugged since 3am or so so honestly...it isn't that bad considering I streamed pandora for 3+ hours

flyjbaker - what Radio/WiMAX/PRI are you running?

Your choice of kernel should be irrelevant to any 4G issues.

good point. when doing the process I mention above I also received all of the latest radios etc.

I'm sorry, but you're going to have to be clearer than that.

Forgive me if I cover something you're already familiar with, but there are a several different radios, wimax radios, NV's, and PRI's that have been made available over at XDA. The combination thereof, that you use, will impact your connectivity directly. It is not common for custom ROMs, such as Myn's, to include Radios with their releases. One reason for this is that, like kernels, different users have different experiences and results with different radio combos.

Can you please advise what you have? Go under Settings -> About Phone -> Software Information - Baseband Version (aka your Radio), Software Number (important due to recent PRI changes), PRI Version, and PRL Version.

I have all of the most updated radios and PRL and Porfile.

I talked to Sprint CS just for shits and grins. A VERY VERY nice and helpful young lady helped me out. She seemed quite proficient in what she was talking about and in no way tried to talk down to me and never asked me to do elementary bullsh*t.

We started straight from the dial pad and entered ##3282#. I thought this was funny but that is the street number of my address of my house. She said it was strictly coincidence. That brings up a menu. We went into "Edit mode" where it prompts you for a password. Sorry, I should have been armed with it but I don't remember it. We went thru a couple of menus I have never seen and basically "restored" a wimax selection. The phone went into a boot cycle updating a lot of stuff. ONE OF THEM WAS CHECKING FOR FIRMWARE UPDATE...which she said would fail. I didn't want to wait around to see if it failed so I hit cancel immediately when it started checking for that and told her it failed. No big deal.

In the end, no joy. She was absolutely adamant that it was not a problem with my phone since all indices were indicating that it is working. I still have a hard time buying that since this has happened in 3 different markets. But she said that there are always complaints of this nature in all markets. Anyway, they will be calling me back tomorrow to check and see.....although I will be at home with no 4g so don't know what good that will do......

Baseband: 2.15.00.11.19
Software Number: Azrael X v3.1 by Rick Simon
PRI Version: 1.90_003
PRL: 60674

Repeat, this has been an issue with numerous ROM/Kernel combos.

And I am SOOOOOO glad she didn't ask me to go down that list.....I would have had to come up with some story of why I didn't know the software number.....

Well, latest isn't always the greatest.

First try dropping back down to PRI 1.77 but keep Radio 2.15.00.11.19 and WiMAX 27167. Reflash the PRI, boot up, Update Profile, reboot again, then test please.

everything is completely stock..updated via OTA to the most current. (the process that I thought I had mentioned above was unrooted, ran ruu for my hardware/radio versions, updated to current via OTA update, them rooted again via unrevoked)

while on myns previously I had updated radios etc with the zip he has in his thread and had the issues that flyjbaker is having right now.

the question still remains though...what is flyjbakers current radio etc versions..nm... i was interrupted while posting haha...
