Root 5.0.5 CyanogenMod 5.0.5 available!

Thanks for the links. I swear I looked through the whole CM forums and couldn't find it. I need more coffee.

Edit: Haha, it is hard to find them if I am looking in the wrong forum. I wasn't looking in the media forum. Damn bookmarks make it hard to notice new forums going up. :-)

Man I love these guys (Koush&Cyan). Best ROM's out IMO. They might have a few bugs here and there but the features and options they have are not met by any other dev. I just donated $65 to Koush and $50 to Cyan (haha I have given Cy like $300 bucks since way back when I had my G1). Apps2SD is great but in all honesty do we really need it? I haven't had any trouble with running out of memory for apps yet, and I'm not willing to shell out however much it is for a class 6 16GB microSD IF they even make REAL ones. Anything less then class 6 and you may have problems loading and running certain apps.

I asked this question before, but what, in your opinion, makes it better than, say, Smoked Glass 6.0.1?

I am seriously interested in this answer, not trying to be a jerk. SG is running super on my phone. Cool, battery life is awesome (running low voltage 1ghz kernel) and I am running Helix Launcher.

So what features would I expect if I switched that I do not have now? The only answer I got before was "just try it". What are the features you speak of that are not available on other ROMs?

Thanks.

Yea I tried again and when I wiped data and cache twice it worked. Strange. This theme is amazing though.

Data wipes seem to help when making any changes (even adding themes and kernels). I have made it a habit. With a good Titanium program and program data backup, the only hassle is recreating my home screens and basic system data.

Yea I tried data and cache wipe the first time I installed and it didnt work then went to my backup and tried without wipe and it didnt work. Only worked when I wiped both data and cache twice.

For one, read the changelog that was posted, I'm on my phone so I don't really want to type it all, although I could probably copy and paste, oh well. There are many menu and settings added, even small stuff like in your call log you can make it show the exact time, rather than the relative time, animation settings, call/notification settings, wired tether, VPN, etc. The main thing is that this is compiled from source, and gets code fixes that people are working on and submitting in the AOSP, instead of using the base from Moto. It really works to run well on the phone, rather than add tons of tweaks and extras.

I can't say what makes it better than SG because I haven't used it, so the best I can say is, make a backup, try it out, and restore if you don't like it. Wipe your /data before flashing though.

I am running Ultimate V8, "Morphed" to my liking. I had a 2-hour peek at 5.0.5, and liked what I saw. Only reason I changed from it was that even after I managed to get it to let me sign in to my Google account, my market was still broken:(. As I mentioned earlier, I'm sure it was my error, as I don't see posts of this problem elsewhere. Every other aspect of the ROM was smooth and quick.

I will definitely be keeping an eye on future releases, as I'm sure they will only get better:D

So far I'm really liking Cyanogen Mod 5.0.5. This is the first time ever using a Cyanogen Mod, and I definitely appreciate Koush porting it to the Droid.

It's a little weird, the ROM having been coded from source versus being based on Droid-specific code. Not sure how that will impact the device over the long term, might be little odd issues.

That cell-standby issue, last I checked mine was at 42%. What is the actual impact of that?
Well, after a reboot and using my phone more this afternoon, the display has crept back up. Probably running like it should be now, so far really liking it. Especially after finally getting Titanium Backup to work, there isn't the pain of getting everything back to the way it was, save for the home screen. Which making the move to this awesome version of Launcher2, that was going to happen anyhow. Really stable Launcher2, only issue is from time to time the icon text gets misaligned and all messed up. Quick tap of "Restart Launcher2" fixes that.

So far still running on the default kernel and have it OC'd to its max 1ghz. Fairly snappy, system runs really well save for immediately after a reboot.

So my questions for the Cyanogen fans:

What is the best kernel? Previously I've liked running around 1100-1200mhz, and from what I've seen it sounds like there are some kernels that allow lower-voltage? Any of those kernels still apply a lower voltage to 1100mhz (can't imagine anything over 1100 will be an option without high(er) voltages).

And what are the best themes? Any good themes that aren't specifically labeled for Cyanogen Mod yet work just fine? AdamZ's Smoked Glass has always been my favorite theme, and while I wait for themes like Dark Minimalism to be finished, what dark, simple themes are out there?
Some themes are so close but miss it with the flashy battery and other icons, or just go a little overboard with fancy icons or splashes of color.

Can Smoked Glass even be had without the ROM for 2.1 these days? And is there much pain in making it work on Cyanogen, as I remember reading there was some file differences that needed attention.

Currently looking at applying NexDeep, but still adds a little more flair in some places than I'd like. But will decide after I actually apply the theme, as it does look really nice in most areas.

Loaded up 5.05 last night and loving it...rockin' the 24k theme and really looks and works great....

on the cell-standby issue....isn't your cell-standby battery % going to always be high if you're not using your device? sorry if this is a stupid question, but if I'm not using the phone, the display, apps, etc., then cell-standby will usually be what is primarily using batt time....if I use my device, display % will jump to the top, followed by whatever else is being used....or better yet, turn on wifi, gps, or bluetooth and let it run in the background....your cell standby % will drop....

forgive my ignorance if I've missed the point of the argument....

yes that does make sense, but the issue with Cell standby was people seeing a 50% loss of signal when they really were not loosing a signal.

Then another piece was when you had the 50% loss the battery went faster..

Now looking at my BB v0.8 from Pete, currently phone idle is the highest 35% (7h 30m) and the Cell standby is 27% I think. Cell standby should be high because that is where it spends most of the time,

I personally amd not worried about what is the higher percentage as long as my battery life is the same (or close) to what I have today)

That's what I thought.
Don't worry, I'm pretty ignorant of what the "issue" even is. On the cyanogen mod forums there is talk of a 50% cell-standby issue, and I don't get it. Maybe it's an issue where the phone is pushing less power to the radios even when the phone isn't in standby? That's about all I have for ideas. :)

It seems to be a reporting issue. Many people have seen their battery serve them just as well with this ROM as with others....I am one of them. No concerns here.

If you are looking for themes (per earlier post), try the CM forums. I have tried, HexFusion, NexTheme, and Jrummy's "remix" (which is based off of the Desire Theme). Jrummy's theme is actually incorporated into the ROM and he has backed it up in the SPRecovery format (don't need to use Clockwork Recovery).

So far I'm finding a bunch of apps that FC when using a theme on 505. Namely Tapatalk and My Backup Pro... all apps have been freshly installed not restored via Ti or My Backup, I just use this for data... not app restore. Also I notice the ROM lag a bit when running under a theme... Anyone else?..

Stock outta the box is smoken.... ;).

I like the old school wallpaper.... the last one down the line... ;) Isn't this the one Cyan got in trouble for?.

did you try the fix_permissions thing that koush is recommending to everyone?

Tapatalk pro works fine for me so I'm not sure why your having trouble.

Needsdecaf - As another member pointed it it has a ton of tiny little tweaks you don't really notice at first but when I went back to BB 0.8 I started noticing them. The real success of CyanogenMOD ROM's is that it is constantly updated from the source, like a linux desktop os. If you have ever had one you know how often your update manager pops up and you get tons of fixes right? Well that is what Cyan does. He adds in any fix or tweak that gets pushed to the source tree. He also has tons of knowledge when it comes to kernel's. I'm suuuure he has passed a ton of it on to Koush.

do we do this only if we have issues?

I switched tonight, I am running jrummy's Remixed Koush ROM. Need to watch the battery now see how it goes

Going fast for me.

100% to 60% in 7 hours.

With Smoked glass, that was good for 14 hours.

BTW - The ROM updater won't work load the recovery image for me. I guess I'm going to have to flash it normally.

Currently downloading CyanogenMod 5.0.5 from the Rom Manager app. Hopefully i'm doing all this right... after this downloads, and I proceed to install, is there anything else major I need to be aware of? Or will it pretty much finish the job on its own?

yeah if that is the case I will switch back

loving the update. no issues really, except maybe one.

is anyone else noticing a weaker signal? i can't tell if the signal indicator is just displaying it incorrectly or if I am actually getting a weaker signal.
