5.9.902

I agree with your observation. I was 95% of the time on Wi-Fi and switched it off recently just to help monitor.

When on Wi-Fi a data drop on my 3G-only access was just never shown. The Wi-Fi and 3G icons were both displayed right through the problem. More recently the 3G icon seems to disappear when there is a drop and only reappears if I turn Wi-Fi off and wait a minute.

Now that I have Wi-Fi off I have noticed 3G disappearing and then reappearing without being touched. The frequency seems to have gone down over the last week. I might be wrong.

I hope you are right about 5.9.902 being real ... it does seem a little odd ... one message in 3+ days ...

I am curious do we know if the .902 update has a different kernal or Radio from .901? If so is it even better. Also I am on my first bionic. I have almost traded this thing in a gillion times because of the data drop issue. However once I got 901 all seemed rosey. Well even on 901 the data drops came back. Iwas upset. So I called verizon. They sid somthing that fixed it for a week. Then more data drops. So I called again and told them. They did somthing different that time and data drops on 901 have never been back..... so point is all systems have to be alligned in perfect harmony whilest understanding the nuainces of the phone. Good towers, software on phone, and hooked up properly on verizons end. If all of these align. You have an awesome phone. That's unfortunate because most ppl can't understand all of that tech stuff like ppl on the forums. Most ppl aren't even on the forums. Oh and telling ppl that your equipment works great when somone else is having a problem is about the most ignorant thing you can do on these forums.

If it makes you happier, how about if I say that my phone never has been able to get either 3G or 4G in months and that it reboots six times a day? I'm sure that would be helpful info for those who INSIST on sticking with their phone when getting a replacement likely will resolve their connectivity issues instead of waiting for some magical update. Geez, the truth is even on the first version of the OS, my wife's Bionic has always hung on tenaciously to 4G...but if you'd rather think that the guy who claims people have gotten as many as EIGHT "bad" phones is the guy you should listen to...well all I have to say is: GOOD LUCK!

I think your observations are correct as you see them. I reported what others have said in this forum. The most exasperated person to visit here was the one who said he was on his eighth Bionic. Another person visiting here reports data drops in her phone and 11 more in her office.

I try to find out more and add it to the collected knowledge that we have here since Verizon is not forthcoming.

A totally outside observation is that you are ALWAYS on 4G whereas the others are on 3G sometimes, 4G sometimes, and switching between the two as they travel.

This may be the reason your experiences are so much better than theirs.

why does anyone need an update? I've got two bionics here and they both work great. I don't like messing with success (ie, if it's not broke; don't "fix" it).

Is this a rhetorical question? I really don't understand why you would post the above in this thread. Obviously, Moto is working on another update for this phone not because it "works great" and it's "not broke" (BTW, broke is a verb, not an adjective). You know, you don't have to download the update if you don't want to.

I try to let people know that not all samples of a product are faulty, but rather than those with problems being encouraged by my comments, some seem to take offense that I've got a sample that works well. oh well! I've been on both sides of the fence which is why I urge people with Bionics that are having lots of problems to just get a replacement.

You fail to realize that almost all Bionics are faulty. Most people are too dumb to realize it. Why would Moto already have a 2nd update not long after their 1st one? It's definitely for a reason. Just look at the list of fixes, and it's pretty obvious you are a small minority that has never had problems with your phone.

It's ironic that you think we are taking offense because your phone "works so well" (which makes it look like you are full of yourself). The reason we take offense is that you come into a thread where people with problems with their Bionics are likely to visit (which are most Bionic owners), and you say that another update is not needed to fix our phone issues (which, again, makes it look like you are full of yourself).

I'm still having daily glitches with my phone where reboots are necessary. And since the reboots take twice as long as my 5 year old laptop, it gets frustrating.

You fail to realize that almost all Bionics are faulty.

I actually don't agree with this one portion of the comment... Yes I do believe a number of Bionics are having issues but I believe you have gotten an incorrect picture of the problems because ( and I hope to properly paraphrase what Thom had posted elsewhere )...

... There are just a few types of people that commonly visit and post on a forum area such as this.

- Those looking to see what others are saying so they can decide between different products.

- Those with questions on how to use a product.

- Those that have problems.... and these are the ones that will post the most of all of the others.

People that aren't having issues seldom have a need to post. Of course there are others that are here trying to assist others or looking for mod information or help etc. Still... what you see on a forum such as this more than anything else will be those that have issues.... this will greatly skew the picture of what you see of a product.

If you look at the thread asking about if a user would recommend a Bionic... at this time the majority would. If almost all phones were having issues, this wouldn't be the case and almost no one would recommend one instead.

I'm also one of those that have had very few problems with my Bionic even before the released updates. I do feel lucky in that and I feel a lot of what I experienced is due to the fact that the 4G network in the area I'm in is farely recent so I don't see the issues like many that are in areas which got 4G early on.

A good number of the issues I've seen reported have been resolved by reseting their SD and sim cards... I believe a lot of the data drops are also caused by the network more than by the phone but as seen with those that have applied the 5.5.901 update... it's obvious that the software is part of the answer to these problems. Still, there have been a sigificant number of users that required a replacement phone and these shouldn't be ignored... but we need to temper those numbers somewhat because even not all of those have had their issues solved, again pointing more to the network as their underlying cause.

1. FYI: my comment about "if it isn't broke, don't fix it" doesn't reflect my excellent grammatical skills, but rather my not bothering to use "ain't", which then becomes the more accurately quoted phrase, "it it ain't broke, don't fix it". Your condescension is duly noted, sport.

2. If you refuse to exchange a faulty Bionic, that's your business. I mentioned my great success with my replacement to give others here some hope--but you'd rather play tough guy and take me to task for that. Whatever.

Just got the update. Already having problems with smart keyboard pro freezing and closing. Phone is being real laggy.

Hey guys new to the forum ..ive been creepin for a while finally decided to join ..just downloaded the new bionic update(5.9.902) the blackscreen was really bugging me but more than that my screen lock sounds wouldnt turn off hopefully this new update fixes this ..any thoughts?

Got 902 this morning. It's only been a couple hours but running fine so far. Noticed quite a few new Verizon apps.

Well, it arrived to me today and (drum roll please) it didn't screw up my root. I'm rooted stock and I unfroze all my bloat before taking it, but we'll see how it does me!

Now, if we could just kick Moto's as* in gear to get ICS on the Bionic instead of these patches...........

After reading all the other posts, I finally feel I need to chime in on this one.

Just because a device doesn't meet your expectations when you get it, doesn't mean its faulty and needs be returned. That is why there is a software update process and support forums and help lines. Almost EVERY device on the shelf in a store or warehouse has outdated firmware on it. It's the nature of electronics. You should EXPECT to have to run an update when you buy it.

If you get a PC virus, or a Windows update notice, do you just pack your computer up and send it back to HP or Dell?

Buggy 4g does not mean the phone is broke, it means there is a software issue that probably had a patch waiting. Motorola has been 'fairly' fast at putting out patches for the Bionic.

With all due respect:

People that are not savvy enough to take initiative and look to see if they can fix the problem themselves, probably shouldn't buy the items in the first place. If the Bionic is above your level or you are too lazy to look to see if there is a fix, try an Iphone.

Why do all of the threads on this subforum have to have a whole page of Bionic hate? If you don't like it, you don't need to post here how you don't like it, how you're getting a different phone. It just isn't necessary.

Also, 902 rocks.

They have a right to their opinion.

My biggest challenge was in not responding to people who had made up their minds to move on and try to identify the 50% of them who just needed some help.

Some people actually will be happier if they move off the Bionic and onto some 3G device (probably an iPhone).

What attracts me to the Bionic is that it is more powerful than the first mainframe computer I was paid to program. Imagine ... a mainfram computer in your pocket that also makes phone calls.

To me the Bionic is simply superb.

I've had every Android Verizon phone and Windows Mobile phones back to 2002 and dumb phones before that on verizon and dumber phones on LA Cellular. The Bionic IMO has had the worst data connection of any phone I have had, in the short time I've had it. We are guinnea pigs for an unfinished product. BTW I live in Los Angeles!

Before 5.9.901/5.9.902 that was the case. I am mostly on wi-fi and not affected as much. I had customers who I recommended stay on 3G because the had to have a reliable data connection.

I assume you are now on 5.9.902 ... is it still unreliable for you?

Staying on 3G & WiFi is good advise. At home I'm on WiFi feeding off FIOS, great data flow, At work I get little to no signal. While traveling between home and work I'm split between 3G & 4G. When I am on 3G the phone will not jump to 4G, but it will go back to 3G when 4G dies. The 902 upgrade helps a little... I often put the phone in CDMA only & save my battery.

Reports are that battery use is better in 5.9.902 and you might not need to switch to CDMA only.

Are you positive that you were NOT in CDMA only those times it would not switch from 3G to 4G? Sometimes it can be set the way you didn't intend.

My phone bricked itself flashing an update. Battery died part way through. Now it's stuck in fastboot and won't charge the battery. So I'm working several angles to get a charged battery so I can flash it again to 902. I tried attaching wires directly to the battery. I tried my verizon store. We have many Android phones in service but no other Bionic. I'm waiting on an external battery charger. I really want to like this phone

If it is possible to love something that doesn't breath ... you will love your Bionic.

How about taking your current battery to the Verizon store ... tell them you are in a real jam and ask them to charge it for you? Then you could get on with it.
