5.9.904 Update for DROID Bionic Officially Announced

Assuming that that this .904 version becomes official, does it seem odd to anyone that development has only progressed 2 builds from the last update?

In approximately the same amount of time the Razr updates have progressed 8 builds between releases.

This, along with the lack of supporting documentation of .904 being "Officially Announced" has me very skeptical.

People are trying to put 2 +2=904. Just because someone found this in cheesecake and a soak test is coming people assume they go together. There is a chance it will be another stray from the upgrade path.

What is broken that is so important that it must be repaired now? With 5.9.902 it was final correction of a number of data drop issues. What is it now that justifies the risk?

In addition ... here's a word of caution ...

The Droid X was upgraded and pushed out to all devices recently and a number of people jumped on installing the upgrade the instant it was made available.

Unfortunately that version was closing off methods to allow people to root their Droid X. There was no known method for root-ing after installing the upgrade.

You might well ask ... why did Motorola/Verizon do that?

It may, but the 902 FXZ works on 904 updated devices, so it is not that big of a deal.

actually, 902 was not a universal fix. People were still having issues with 4G To 3G hand offs, and even the 904 hasn't fixed everything.

However, 904 does fix some minute issues in general that 902 was supposed to fix, but didn't.

Anyone having any connectivity on 904 using the YouTube app?

Connectivity issues? No. Connectivity (meaning it works)? Yes.

I am one of those people. I feel like I actually had better 3G/4G switching when I was off of the upgrade path.

For once I am going to wait and let the official official update get pushed to me. It's tough, but I'm gonna do it...

What Thom said.

I haven't had any problems since .902, so I see no need to bother upgrading, especially since it might disable my root and thus unfreeze all the POS programs that are defaulted onto the OS.

For clarification ... I wasn't saying anything bad was going to happen if you installed the 5.9.904 leak. What I was trying to say was ... something bad might happen even when you install the production versions.

That's how I recently lost root on my Droid X.

Be cautious.

My gf unrooted DX got stuck in the bootloader on a OTA update. Verizon tech support could not fix her phone but I could...hahaha. Hope this update if/when it comes does not do that to my Bionic.

If you're not root-ed and don't plan to be ... it probably doesn't matter.

If you are or plan to be in the future ... wait until someone has confirmed that you can root/un-root before installing any system update.

So far I've taken my Bionic from 902 to 904 and back to 902 without any issues. I used voodoo ota rootkeeper to keep root. I also used motofail to get root back when I restored to 902.

Yes, I went back for a couple reasons. First, I wanted to see if that would fix my problem with the YouTube app and the second reason was I wanted to know I could.

I am back on 904 and things appear to be running well.

On this article Verizon Update Schedule Out; HTC, Motorola Updates Incoming - Other News - droid HIVE - Articles - droidHIVE it says that we will get, if nothing goes wrong, 5.9.904 on 5/05.

I don't see anywhere in this article where it specifies what version of software is being tested for the Bionic. It says SU3, 42MB, in test. That appears to be a rather minor update, and this probably is 904, but could also be another build, as we have seen build numbers differ from leaks before.

Well if you look at what date its getting tested 4/16-5/1 and then you look at when 904 was official announced on 4/14. I am pretty sure that it is 904 but I have been wrong before too haha.

Now the thing I dont like is why is the RAZR getting ICS before us? maybe they are using the RAZR as a test to make sure they give the Bionic the ICS it deserves.

It is very simple ... it is marketing ... the Razr is their iPhone-killer. If you like the iPhone I venture to guess that you like the Razr. If you don't like the iPhone I venture to guess that you like the Bionic.

My friend has the RAZR and its a nice phone, but I love my Bionic so I'm going to be pro Bionic all day long. Android for life haha

I understand your logic and how people have come to the conclusion that you did. You may very well be correct.

I have seen variations before from what appear to be conclusions such as this one. The most recent past was the 5.7 series version for the Bionic. That was supposed to be Official when it was leaked, and there was even a path of version numbers that was alleged to be the path to ICS. Many of us learned the hard way to take the word "Official" (without documentation) with a grain of salt.

Prior to that was the Thunderbolt. A version 605.3 was leaked and everyone said it was the "Official" OTA that was coming. In fact it was 605.5 that was released by Big Red.

People are trying to put 2 +2=904. Just because someone found this in cheesecake and a soak test is coming people assume they go together. There is a chance it will be another stray from the upgrade path.

That is where I'm coming from.

I have yet to see documentation of any "official announcement" of a software version for our Bionics... only that testing is in progress. That is pretty much always the case. With this stuff, someone is always claiming to know someone or have an inside scoop. Some do, some don't. Talk is cheap, and without documentation, I'm the biggest skeptic. I learned the hard way with 5.7.893 version.
