$99 for the VNex.., Would you?

MetroSquard

Newbie
I'm considering the current Verizon Nexus. I'm available for an upgrade in a couple if weeks, from the OG DInc.
Knowing what you know NOW about this phone: Would you sign a 2 year contract for a $99 Nexus?
Samsung Galaxy Nexus now $99 at Verizon

OR: Should I just wait until the end of the year & pay (at least) twice the price when they hopefully release the next version?

I would get it. I has great hardware and its going to be supported for a long time. The Nexus S just got 4.1 I would imagine the GNEX will be supported for at least the next 2 years at which point you can upgrade to the lastest Nexus. Its a steal for $99.

I would absolutely pay $99 for this phone ESPECIALLY if you plan to root it. This is the most root friendly phone ever, it has amazing dev support with many of the heavy hitters running it and actively developing for it. Even if you're not going to root, you'll be at the front of the line for the new OS, which is a jewel in it's own right.

May I have suggest that you check Wirefly to see if you can snag the phone for $49.99. I got mine for that price for their July 4th sale. I have seen the price go up and down depending on Wireflys current sales. If it is not on sale when you're ready to upgrade, in my opinion the $100 price is worth it. Good luck!

If you were grandfathered into the old "truly" unlimited data plan then upgrading will force you into their new crap plans. Buy it off ebay and don't use upgrades. Unless, of course you are already on their new crap plans then feel free!

I upgraded to the GNex in order to keep my unlimited data plan. At the time it was still $199 but I had a $100 discount and they threw in a $50 mail in rebate. I was trying to preorder the SIII but I couldn't because it was an early upgrade. In hindsight I feel like I kind of dodged a bullet when later it came out the Verizon SIII had a locked bootloader.

I had known that the GNex had a plethora of developers working with it but it blew me away at just how many there actually are. There is a lot that can be done with it if that's what you're into.

Word to the wise though, look into an extended battery if you do decide to get the Galaxy Nexus. It is one of the few shortcomings this phone has.

nope! pay more for the gsm version and go to "straight talk"

and read this article while you're at it. this guy basically sums up my sentiments and fears of what would transpire when i first heard a nexus was coming to vz

Why I'm ditching the Verizon Galaxy Nexus | Computerworld Blogs

The gsm version is slightly thinner has better battery life (according to the rumblings on the forum and my personal experience) but most importantly it gets timely updates << i personally dont worry about this last part because im rooted.

goodluck hope this helps

The Nexus is still a top tier phone, even though it is 7 months old. It runs so smooth on Jelly Bean, it definitely had plenty of life remaining.

PS, OP, you will lose unlimited, but don't have to sign up for the share everything plans if you don't want to, just will get a 2GB plan instead.

Check my post in this forum. HTC was offering it for $49 for those upgrading.

I went from incredible to nexus (got mine new for free before shared plans) and outside of occasionally hitting buttons I don't mean and the radio issue, I love it. I was rooted on Inc but not on Nexus. It is good enough stock so far.

Also, you need to check authorizes resellers. Call them all. I got mine free new from one.

I say definitely get the GNEX. I went from a Bionic and WOW what a huge difference. As far as renewing with Verizon i say hell no. Since you are coming from the DINC you should have unlimited data and like others have said you will lose that. I picked mine up off craigslist for $265. It came with the extended battery and an otterbox.
