A guide on how I debranded my Vodafone Desire to get 2.2 quicker.

i have the install file still i can upload to megaupload etc tonight if you still need it

is this link not working?

Doing a quick google search on the long filename, it came up with.

Hotfile.com: One click file hosting: OTA_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8-1.21.405.2_release4dua3bcrut4wrv30.zip

Not sure if it'll work, but its the same size etc, looks like a mirror, However as it's not from the HTC site, i can't really say it's safe.. it probably is, but.. you know.

No it can't - if you have this on your phone it means you should be rooted. Superuser permissions is like the control app for root access. When an app requests root permissions superuser should pop up asking if you want to allow it. It can be set to remember this preference & if you wish to change a permission at a later date it has a list of your current permissions in the app.

You can get rid of it if you flash a non-root rom, but overall now youve got it I wouldnt try to get rid of it :D

Hmmm. Interesting. But I'm under the impression that I cant root due to only buying my desire a couple of days ago, as it has preloaded 0.83 hboot, with all the Vodafone junk on it. I have tried to root, but as far as I'm aware ive been unsuccessful.

I am in the process of installing this file so will let you know how it goes once complete.

Looking good so far :p

Can confirm the new link works a treat :)

Am now completely froyo'd up.

Thanks for posting that new link mate.

So, Ive come to the conclusion that if I have 0.83 hboot, it is possible to root, however the device will not boot into recovery, meaning I can't install any new roms...so anyone in the same boat as me is pretty much screwed until a new hack is created..

ok couple of questions

1, is still still working after the bloatware update (my boot is 80.000)

2, can i do it using a mac?

thanks in advance

Doesnt work with my branded vodafone
Software:1.24.161.3
HBOOT:0.830001
How did you gain root?

If im completely honest, im not 100% sure, I used unrevoked3, and followed the steps, I thought it failed, but I now have the 'superuser permissions' on my menu, which apparently means im rooted..im a bit of an android noob, so i wouldnt listen to any of my advice to be fair! :p All i know is, on the current hboot, there isnt much we can do until a crack is found.

Yeah i got the same using unrevoked, got the Superpermissions icon, but phone acts as though its not rooted??? I also tried the 0.92 to 0.80 update from xda developers but get a CID error, is there any good way of testing the goldcard and SU icon to confirm if either are working correctly? Would be annoying to go through this and it be my sdcards

No, i am in the same position. Rooting is possible and easy using any of the methods available, but once root is finished it the handset doesnt go into the clockwork mod recovery, so flasshing roms becomes impossible as recovery seems to be blocked!

Yeah, my phone seems to be in the same state as yours then, I've not tried to 0.92 to 0.80 update as yet, as I'm pretty sure it wont work, but I might give it a shot. But like I saidm I'm a bit of a noob, i was just told that if I have the superpermissions icon, then I'm rooted, but as you say, the phone isnt acting like its rooted. I'll give the 0.92 to 0.80 update a go and report back if it works.

Hey swoose someone at xda with identical phone bricked when he managed to get it to work so might be worth waiting for more info

Ok, cheers for the info, i failed at the first hurdle anyway as I could get the phone to recognise the PB99IMG.zip file...

I guess its probably best to wait it out and see if anything develops...

Cheers again

Hmmm, got a problem. I created a goldcard and flashed to the debranded 2.1 rom no problems. Then I put the froyo update.zip on my sd card. Booted into recovery and got a message:

E:can't open /cache/recovery/command

I proceeded to run update.zip anyway (stupid me)

Now my phone boots to the stage where it wants to access my sim card then reboots. This continues until I have to pull my battery.

Any help fixing this would be really appreciated.

@photon_00 I had a similar problem perhaps: I ran update.zip after seeing the same message (yeah, dumb, I know) and it booted to the 0-100% counter, but got into a boot-loop at 92%. Only way out was to pull the battery. As a last resort I tried putting update.zip on my goldcard that I'd used to de-brand the phone, and ran it from there instead of my usual 16GB card, and hey presto, it worked perfectly. I'm now running 2.2 on a de-branded (originally German T-mobile) desire. My steps:

1. Make goldcard using originally supplied 4GB card
2. Unbrand phone using xda supplied ([ROM] Official HTC Desire RUU ROMS and OTA Update URLs - xda-developers) RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4. 06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe

3. Follow EvilGenius's instructions Manually install the official Froyo build on HTC Desire | Geekword to install 2.2, *USING THE GOLDCARD*. I got the update file from the hotfiles link earlier in this thread Hotfile.com: One click file hosting: OTA_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8-1.21.405.2_release4dua3bcrut4wrv30.zip

So far, so good. 2.2 is running, apps are there, data is there, so far so good. Took a bit of swearing and a few tense moments when I thought I'd bricked it, but it did work eventually. Good luck!

Edit: Of course, once 2.2 is installed I put back the usual 16GB card and it's fine...

Edit2: Camera didn't work after update: fixed by doing a factory reset through settings (not boot recovery). Am restoring data using MyBackup Pro now...

@chump_137. Thanks for the quick reply. So currently I'm stuck with a broken version of 2.2. Are you saying start again. ie create a goldcard, reflash the debranded 2.1 rom (can I do that from a broken 2.2) and then update the 2.2 zip from the goldcard?

Thanks a lot for the help

I did mine yesterday following this post.

I did not take my goldcard out dureing the whole process. Did the goldcard, flashed and then downloaded the ROM onto the same card and installed.

Only when it was completed did I put my original card back in. Wasn't because I knew better, just too lazy to keep swapping cards :p

When it completed and rebooted the first time I just had a black screen and nothing would work...Cacked my pants for about a minute but was perfect after the reboot.

Mine seems to be working perfectly, today will be the big test to see how it performs on a normal day as only finished it at 5pm last night and don't use it too much round the Mrs cos she gets jealous :D

Only thing i thought I'd get is the round battery symbol but I presume thats only available on cooked roms as mines same as always. Despite that loving the flash and seems very very fast :)

You don't have to make another goldcard mate, the one you made is permanent. Just copy the update.zip on to that card. reboot into recovery mode then install the SD/update.zip.

My god that works. Chump_137, Jay_kay and Septian I love you. Not just a transient love but a real deep love :) Thanks people!

correct. you need to root and rom for that kind of jiggery-pokery....

Thanks mate. Also just realised that my lockscreen is the same as it used to be (i.e slide down) thought it would be the one as in lockbot with the 2 slide across bars? Is that just vanilla android that uses that?
