A guide on how I debranded my Vodafone Desire to get 2.2 quicker.

My boot is 0.80.000 (post bloatware crap) and the update method posted at the top of this article doesn't work.

I believe you will need to root and install a custom rom to get around it.

I did not do the update but I am sure my bootloader was 0.80 when I looked. Worked ok for me but I would not take that as a guarantee that it will for you. Might be best to wait until someone has a guaranteed workaround for it.

Check on XDA as I seem to remember seeing that someone might have already cracked it.

Made serious progress but I now see that I can't install apps from the market. The apps download and when they come to install my phone reboots. Anyone seen or heard of this?

Can i just confirm that the guide at the start still works? I donloaded all the necessary stuff.... but if the OTA update is no longer available is there any point in going forward with it?

Thanks evil but that link doesnt work... :(

503 - service not available

are you sure you're using the link i just posted? i checked it two minutes ago and the download was available.

just to be sure, i'm talking about the link provided by Septian:

Doing a quick google search on the long filename, it came up with.

Hotfile.com: One click file hosting: OTA_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8-1.21.405.2_release4dua3bcrut4wrv30.zip

Not sure if it'll work, but its the same size etc, looks like a mirror, However as it's not from the HTC site, i can't really say it's safe.. it probably is, but.. you know.

Yes i had troubles with installing apps, tried to install reboot of OS...

Aparently it's because the apps are requesting to be installed on your sdcard and some bug prevents then from doing so...

so the solution is...

go to...

menu->settings->sd & phone storage->Unmount sd card

install apps

then remount sd card...

there is a app on the market called SDmove that then allows you to move apps to your sd card after installing em.

My software number 1.24.161.3
I get a bootloader error. Is this a solution? Waiting for your help. Thank you.

Unfortunatly, This is the Voda "unwanted" update. as far as im aware, you cannot use this method to remove this..

About a month ago I dropped my phone in the toilet... it broke, so I went down to phones 4 u and bought a pay as you go desire, with the Vodafone network. It wasn’t branded (as far as I could tell), and I could put my current o2 sim in there (the sim was fine, even after having a toilet dipping)...

Fast forward 2 days ago I saw an OTA update... Yay Froyo I thought... So I downloaded it and installed it...

Meh! My o2 simmed phone has all this Vodafone poo on it... version 1.24.161.3
I had to rectify this problem! Pesky Vodafone and their pesky adult site bookmarks.
Found this thread and tried to de-brand the phone... it didn’t work. Apparently Vodafone thought they would like to tweak the bootloader and that made the de-branding impossible.
Well no! I found a way.
What I did was. (note, I was trying not to have a rooted system)

1. Follower the instructions on this thread that basically meant I had a gold card.

2. Root the phone using that “unrevoked 3” thing. This worked seeing as I was still on the 0.8 boot thingy (some people are on 0.83 so this may not work)

3. Made a backup of my settings using that mybackup app

4. Installed any old rooted 2.1 rom

5. Tried to install the RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4. 06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe. this didn’t work as my bootloader was the same. Dam I thought.

6. I found this site [HOW-TO] Downgrade HBOOT - HTCPedia.com forums... This has instructions on how to downgrade your bootloader as long as your phone is rooted... I had a few problems. Like you need to install a terminal app (on the actual phone) and type in “SU” before commencing step 4 on the above link. Also note in step 3 (the cid generator) use version number 1.21.405.2

7. Then I tried (with the gold card in) to install the RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4. 06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe... YAY that worked... at this point I was on a generic 2.1 rom and not rooted.

8. Goddammit HTC pulled the update... so I tried to manually apply the update. Using the instructions on Manually install the official Froyo build on HTC Desire | Geekword this didn’t work... my phone kept rebooting itself.

9. What i then did was put the update.zip on my goldcard and try again... this worked perfectly... unbranded 2.2, up yours to Vodafone... yay

I had troubles installing apps after the update... but i used the unmount sdcard trick to get around that (in my last post). Now these are the exact things i did... you can probably skip step 4,5,8.

Thank you for your interest. One solution might be the future?
I'm sorry for my english.

Yes I believe so, Because of all the uproar toward vodafone, I "think" they are working on something to remove it :)

Thanks for the help gjs585. Unfortunately I still have the problem after doing this. I'm not too confident in my install. If I go into recovery I still see the message regarding the /cache/command/recovery.

I'd like to reinstall again. Doe anyone know of a way I can go back to 2.1 and then update again?

Fantastic TuT worked a charm :D had it all done apart from adding froyo so followed the tut linked on post 48 now my device F/C's over and over will not recognise sim or micro sd any longer so I did as gjs585 suggested and added the froyo update to my gold card and went through the update prosses again and bob's your uncle fanny's your aunt I now have a vodafone Desire debranded and running Froyo :D

Actually, just doing a factory reset fixed my problems. I can now install apps from the market. Froyo on my desire seems to be working well. Thanks again to all for their help.

and the 2010 award for pain, panic, perseverence and pissing about until it woked goes to......photon00!

congrats.

Thoroughly fed up with Vodafone's attitude towards forced use of their apps, their customers and the delay for froyo I decided to take the plunge.

Totally stressed out for about 2 hours etc but in truth, following the initial guide above and then the manual froyo install I got to 2.09.405.8 (Froyo) from 1.19.161.5 (Vodafone 2.1 pre awful update) with no problems.

Thanks to all of you who put this thread together plus your sources of course, oh and get stuffed Vodafone.

Thanks to all the people who have posted information here. I've debranded my 02 desire and manually updated to 2.2.

Ive just debranded and installed froyo on my tmobile desire with this method so it works i think someone was asking about it earlier. thanks for the info everyone provided
