Root a2sd Problem?? Insufficient Space Error with 1.5 GB Partition??

scudder

Android Expert
Hello...

Been running MikG v2.56 ROM for a couple months now with a2sd and a partition that has about 1.43 GB left to install apps.

I am repeatedly getting errors...not all the time but about 8 out of 10 times...trying to install or update apps through the Market. The error says:

Error downloading "_APP NAME_" There is insufficient space on the device.

Obviously, I have enough space on my phone.

I trying wiping cache and dalvik cache as well as Market data. I even repaired permissions but still get this error.

I previously saw some terminal commands to sorta kinda readjust or reset/restart the a2sd functionality on my phone but don't recall the commands and don't know which one to use...if it would even work...in this circumstance.

Any thoughts on a fix for this?? I would certainly prefer any fix short of wiping and reinstalling. Is there some sort "real-world" upper limit on the amount of apps the phone or ROM or a2sd can handle even if one has a large partition??

THANKS!!

Great links, THANKS...and a bunch of other commands at that Facebook link that I wasn't familiar with.

Now, does anyone know what commands to use to hopefully fix my problem?? I don't want to just go messing around doing something that might get me in trouble. I'm thinking I might just have to restart/reset/reassociate the partition or somehow remind the phone how much space is left. I just don't know if it is a simply reset command or a symlink command or what...??

My brother had the same problem on his phone. I used absolute system root.there is an option to configure a2sd.try setting it to SD instead of automatic or internal..this fixed his phone flawlessly. Let me know if this helps.

Hi...thanks for the suggestion but I'm not quite sure of the app you're suggesting. The app that I found at The Market was this:

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.canvs2321.absolute.system

Absolute System Root Tools?? Is that it??

Although I'm kinda familiar with the SD/automatic/internal option, I'm not so sure I want to adjust the setting to "SD" for fear of over-riding something set in the MikG ROM I am using. I was wondering if the setting is the same as the terminal command "a2sd reinstall" (or install)??

Anyway, still wondering if anyone has a suggestion about the a2sd terminal command to fix my issue?? Thanks!!

How Much space do you have on the internal storage of the phone?

On the internal storage I have 198 MB free...lots of space with the partition that I have. The internal storage is always in and around that number, depending upon cache storage.

FYI, I have a 16 GB Class 10 card...partition was 2 GB (2048 MB exactly I think) and I have 1.50 GB free on the partition, 5.41 GB free on the rest of the card.

198 mb free should rule out getting the error message for the device. could always try a2sd reinstall I think this may help not really sure though. How old is the card? wonder if it could be a file system error on the sd ext partition.

If you have access to a linux system (even a live cd) then try to check the ext part of the drive and see if linux gives you any errors.

Yeah, I kinda thought about the internal storage but the amount is pretty significant...especially in light of the fact that the partition is huge with a TON of free space. I also assumed that the error message was associated with whatever error was occurring while the partition was read, not the internal storage.

I was about 90% sure that the a2sd command that I was familiar with to sorta "reset" the a2sd functionality SAFELY without any problems was your suggested "a2sd reinstall"...is that correct?? Running that command won't change any previous/other setting set by the ROM, right??

I'm asking with such caution because I have done NOTHING manually to set up or run a2sd on my phone...the MikG ROM had that functionality built in. All I had to do was partition my card, the ROM recognized the partition and I was good to go...NEVER had to "tell" the phone where to install any of the apps....all automatic.

And the card is not very old...only a few months. I think its a Patriot Class 10 card...I think that is the manufacturer...??

I would do a nandroid and include the sd ext in the nandroid before trying anything. I have never had to use the command so I don't know for sure it will not change anything. I can assume because your just having a reinstall than it wont but I really don't want to assume with your data ;)

Actually we are assuming that its a disk issue but what about a data issue? I wonder what would happen if you wipe out market data reboot clean cache and dalvic and reboot into system?

Much appreciated...already did a nandroid, including the sd ext, earlier this afternoon in anticipation of having to do something to my phone :D

Might try in the morning or see if anyone else can shed any more light on the command or my issue...

We're on the same page here too :D I neglected to mention in my original post that I already booted in recovery, wiped cache and dalvik, rebooted phone, wiped Market and tried...no luck.

I'm also having an issue with a specific app Update...ChompSMS. The update fails through the Market. I don't necessarily get the "insufficient space" error but have gotten some sort of error about an "invalid package"...?? To me I would think that that is not a problem on MY end, but instead with the apk. HOWEVER, with my other issues outside of the ChompSMS update, I'm not so sure something on my end it to blame.

Bigger problem with this is that it is not just an update failure...for some reason, the ChompSMS app on my phone gets "corrupted" and won't launch...app force closes and WILL NOT open. To fix this, I wiped cache and dalvik, wiped Market data AND reinstalled the app portion of my ChompSMS app that is backed up with Titanium.

So, few things I'm dealing with that might be all connected...:confused:

when you reinstall ChompsSMS with Titanium I'm assuming your doing data as well? I have had that same exact error with the streets program. Was planning on trying to delete app and do a reinstall with out the data. And see if that fixes my "Package not Signed Correctly" error message.

Hi...sorry for the delay. Flying back home from Thanksgiving trip out of state...

I actually mentioned above (perhaps not so clearly) that I did NOT reinstall data...ONLY the app. I kept away from the data just in case it was corrupted. My data backup from my ChompSMS was close to a month old and I would have lost some texts I needed to keep.

Anyway, I just did a fresh nandroid backup in anticipation of running the terminal command(s). I ran "as2d reinstall"...saw some things scroll by the screen, was prompted that some app whose package name (com.something.something) force quit and then my phone spontaneously restarted.

With that "as2d reinstall" command is the process supposed take about 10 seconds and then restart the phone?? I'm not sure if I was successful or if I had a problem??

--------
Edit:

I tried the command again and the package that quit was the app "Battery Notifier" so I uninstalled that app and tried again. I ran the "a2sd reinstall" command and I saw perhaps 15 apps scroll by the screen at which time the screen went dark and then the phone restarted again. I do NOT think that that is what is supposed to happen...:(

I think the flash of programs you saw was dt gathering a list of programs that were not on the sd. The shutdown is supposed to happen. Programs don't actually get moved until the reboot. This way it doesnt cause problems for the system when you try to open an app that just got moved.

Hmmm...interesting explanation. I hope that is the case! :D I ran it again and saw another "flash" of programs which, if your though is correct, I would have thought I would NOT see the second time with the presumption that the "first flash" of apps would have been found/added/moved during the first reboot...:confused:

I guess I just wait and see...don't have anything to install or update at the moment. I COULD update ChompSMS but was holding off on that until another release version. Once I have a few other apps to do a "batch update" from the Market, I'll see if I get that insufficient space error again.

Thanks for your help! I'll keep you and anyone else following this thread updated...

maybe its a comparison list? hmm don't know just know when i did my install i got that same flash but it definitely showed up in my memory (A Lot More Space :D )

ok sorry i keep forgetting to post for your thread. holodays keeping me busy. but the best way to check what is going on is to perform a2sd check in terminal emulator. this will show you all of the sym links created for each app and it will report back if there are any issues with your setup.

Yeah holiday was crazy. I was trying to help him, fix my fedora 16, and spend time with the family.
I think it was the family anyway oooh Dude what if I just had thanksgiving with complete strangers

Hey ocn...thanks for coming back from the "dark side" over there in 3D land to help out! ;):D

So, I ran the a2sd check. Here's what I got...not sure how to read it or if it needs fixing....

As you've probably read above, I'm tired wiping cache and dalvik, wiping data for the Market app and that hasn't helped. I've been having trouble specifically with ChompSMS and just can't update the app but I'm also now having issue with a few other apps with that "insufficient space" error message. Interestingly, it appears that I am NOT having a problem with the Amazon Apps store...at least at the moment as I recall I was having update and install problems with the Amazon app. But I am CONSTANTLY having issue with the Market.

As always, help is GREATLY appreciated!! :D

The only real thing that I see is you have no swap partition. (48recomend) I don't think that would cause your issues though. I honestly believe the problem is within the market app itself and not in your setup. There could be some setting that we are not aware of that market is refusing to update or find.

Also I would like to know what:
cat: write error: Broken pipe <--- is all about.

but really you a2sd setup looks fine from what i can see. so again I think is an issue with market

I've had issues for a LONG time now with the Market app even through various version upgrades....the list of "My Apps" not complete (missing up to about 40 apps that I know are installed), prompting me to update an app even though I already have that current version available in the Market...so the thought that the issue might be with the Market app itself is possible.

I had a backup of an older version of the app in Titanium. The latest version I was using was 3.1.11. I downgraded to 3.1.6 (prior to doing so, wiping cache and dalvik, uninstalling the 3.1.11 version and then installing ONLY the app and not any data) but I'm STILL having the same "insufficient space" error messages.

So, I'm still stuck here...not quite sure what to do short of a wipe.

I wondering if, for some reason, patching up or installing the more recent versions of the MikG ROM might help...though I don't see why that would happen as v2.56 of the MikG ROM that I have been using was so stable for me (and for others) for so long...:confused:

I tried a search on Google for reference to that "broken pipe" error and found (in a thread in the androidforums as a matter of fact) that the error is sorta "general" because the a2sd is a bunch of scripts and "if it is working, not to worry about it":

http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/313168-question-about-a2sd-zipalign.html#post2553080

The above link (from the permalink and beyond) is where the first mention of the "broken pipe" error is found. There is some GREAT information about the a2sd check results and other information from AKAZABAM that you might want to look at. I have spoken to akazabam the past and might bounce the issue off of him a bit later...
