Acer Iconia A500

Acer’s Iconia A500 tablet features the same exact hardware specifications as Motorola’s XOOM, but with half the flash storage.....Im new to this, what does it mean?
The Xoom has 32GB of flash memory and costs $600 for the wifi only version.
The A500 will have 16GB of flash memory and will cost $450. Do you think paying an extra $150 to double the flash memory is a good deal? Also remember on the Xoom the microSD card slot is currently crippled and Adobe Flash does not work. When the A500 comes out the microSD card slot will be functional and Adobe Flash will also work (at least that is what is being said now). I can buy a 32GB microSD for less than $150 and boost the flash memory of the A500 to 48GB.

I hope that answers your question.

Flash does work on the Xoom now

No, the cost of flash memory is not really worth it in my opinion with the continually falling price of sd cards. Also, 16gb is more than enough for tons of apps and videos can be easily on and offloaded via usb or Android Manager Wifi as needed. I would say if price is your key concern, get the cheaper one and buy an sd card for cheap. I haven't even come close to filling the 32gb on my xoom, and haven't come anywhere near 16gb.

Glad to hear Flash is working on Xoom. About time. What about the microSD card slot? Is it working yet or will it ever work?

I think for the money I will be happier with the A500.

Just read that official the sd card slot still isn't activated. Though the people on XDA have a hack to get it working. You have to root your XOOM though. Very poor on the part of Motorola.

Yep has Usb 2.0 and micro usb and micro sd card slot. Those were must haves for me.

USB host is killer on something like this. For photographers it means you can plug your camera directly into the tablet and move your pictures and view them without dealing with a PC. Plus you can them back them up to a USB hard drive on the go. And I'm assuming that there will be Android tablet photo-shop-like tools available.

Currently I'm using SD cards for my camera so I might go and switch to micro SD with a converter in the camera so that I can just move the card back and forth, but then you lose access to the card you normally have in the tablet, which is likely the target for where I want the pictures to be stored so they don't take up all your local storage.

The new EyeFi card that can link directly to a tablet (or phone I assume) looks promising as well to solve this problem.

The biggest issue I have with the iPad my wife has is that it's a PITA to get things on it. Either you have to plug it into a PC and use iTunes, or you have to email (sometimes DropBox is ok). But for the later it means sending large files out to a server, and then getting them back. When you're working with a GIG of photos it's nice to just plug it in and drag it over without having to have a network around.

OK so I've just canceled my order with HMV........and placed a collect and reserve order for Currys to pick up my A500 tomorrow!!!

Bring it on!

Won't have much time tomorrow night to use it though (assuming they do actually have stock!) so it may be Friday or Saturday before I get an update posted.

Stay tuned!

If your in the UK Currys and Dixons both have it on their sites now, currys have reserve and collect option which showed my local store having stock, couple of other stores showed as no stock so it's possible some of them do have them.

I'll confirm tomorrow after work if they have it!

Well I have just returned from Currys Digital with a new Acer A500 32gb Wifi. :D:D:D

Still at work so it's not even been opened yet, won't get a chance until later tonight :( but at least I have one!

Guys in the shop didn't even know they had them until they saw my reservation come through, there weren't even any on show in the shop yet.

Funnily enough I just read an article yesterday saying Acer had delayed these until May source being Amazon have changed their delivery date to May.

That is great news.
In for pics and impressions.
please let me (us) know if it comes with the case that is shown in that YouTube video. Would be a nice bonus.

With the Asus supposedly going for $550 without the keyboard, this Acer is looking really good right now.

plus we can pre order it here in the states for $449.

I thought the Asus Transformer was $400, and $150 for the keyboard. So $550 total in the US.

It could be wrong. Lots of rumors floating around.
Originally it appeared at $400 on that Best Buy screen.

there is a thread at androidcentral that posted pricing, now it seems that is just the EU price converted to US $. So it should be cheaper in the US.

Finally things are starting to get going with Android Tablets. It looks like we're going to have a good handful of 3.0 tablets, from major players by June. With a good spread of price and features the companies will figure out what are the price points when the sales numbers start rolling in.

I want one now, but the next round of hardware and software (probably for Christmas in the US) will be much improved based on what happens this summer.

Well folks first impressions.....this thing is great. Simple to set up, runs super fast and looks really nice.

The screen is crystal clear and very responsive.

Not had much time with it for pics etc but USB works with a USB stick, micro SD card works and flash on the interweb works fine.

I can highly recommend this folks...btw this was typed on my acer A500 :-)

Thanks for the report. Do you get a free pouch for the tablet? Also, what are your first impressions on the battery. I read this tab has a smaller battery than the competition.

No free pouch, think the one in the video was a freebie from the shop, plenty of cheap 10 inch case available though.

Battery life has been great so far, but haven't had time to really test it, will do at the weekend.

I know on the xoom the thin bezel makes it awkward to hold. How is it holding the iconia with its wider bezel?
Also, +1 for interwebs and post pictures.

I went into Currys had a play on that and the Xoom and iPad2. The display on the A500 on Currys was very smudged, they had tried to clean it so wasn't the best test. It felt really responsive and quick on the internet access. The Xoom looked a nicer, was lighter and had a fantastic screen, but again the screen wasn't a fair comparison as the Xoom one was nice and clean.

Anyway after much deliberating I picked up the Iconia A500. :) The USB host was the key feature for me. I had an iPad, but did not enjoy having to put up with all their restrictions on the usb camera kit, I missed flash and couldn't stand iTunes.

Charged up the Iconia A500, but not fully so just quickly switched it on. The screen looked amazing at home, far better than in the shop. I'd say defo on par with the iPad and a superb viewing angle, from left or right, or top and bottom. Strangely the A500 felt heavier in Currys than the one I got home, maybe due to be connected to the all the alarms etc.

Will post some stuff up tonight when I've had a play. Looks like you get a few free games and stuff.

It really is up there with best of them, glad there's at least 2 of us who have seen the light!

Looking forward to the tablet version of SwiftKey coming out though, it's my keyboard of choice on my desire. Nothing wrong with the stock keyboard but would like to try SwiftKey.

Yeah I was thinking about the Asus Transformer for ages, but I wouldn't use the dock and would have only got that for the USB and SC card slots. The Acer feels sturdy and expensive when you hold it. Not sure how the Asus would have compared.

I've spotted a first UK review:

Acer Iconia Tab A500 review - PC Advisor

I'll have to try that SwiftKey keyboard. I never really had problems with the iPad keyboard, and the standard one you get with it seemed fine.

I shall try that Astro File Manager too.

Spooky I was just about to post that review, not a bad review though I don't agree with the issues they had with the buttons, I think they are a perfect size and don't ruin the lines of the tablet.

No idea if Swiftkey Tablet will be any good but I like the phone version so it'll be worth trying, but as you say nothing wrong with the stock version.

Astro was the first thing I installed, have it on my phone and it's a great simple app.

Also trying out Dolphin HD browser, I like the stock one but didn't like the fact I had to scroll back to the top of the page to access refresh it has an option for a pop out menu at the side but I wasn't to keen on that. Dolphin allows you to use gestures to kick various things of (new tab, got to top, refresh etc) which is a nice touch on a tablet, didn't like it on the phone but good on the bigger screen.

For now it's trial and error to find what I like but I love the machine itself.
