Acer Iconia A500

Did you try Thumb Keyboard? I think it's the best keyboard for the Iconia. There's also a beta of the upcoming version at thumb4beta.blogspot.com . Great on honeycomb.

I'll check that out thanks for the heads up. Swiftkey is worth a look though:)

Not sure if it was asked. But are you able to have a 32gb micro sd plugged in with a say 16gb or greater flash drive? Would be wonderful. Or since theres a micro usb, maybe get a micro usb->usb converter for another flash drive?

If this is the case, I may be sold on the A500 versus the transformer

Can't see why not, I haven't tried it though, I've got a 16gb micro sd and plugged in an 8gb flash drive and it worked fine.

Right, but thats still under the 32gb limit for the sd-card. I wonder if the 32gb is referring to the space for all of the ports added together or if each port is limited to that.

Thanks for the reply ;)

Got my A500 at Best Buy in the U.S. today. I went there to pre-purchase and the guy said they already had them arrive on the truck this morning. Sold me one right there.

Still playing around with the apps and games tonight and getting the first battery charge. So far, it's quite nice. This is my first tablet, so I've got nothing to compare.

Our BB has one on display now. Will stop by after work.

I'm writing this from my Acer tab. So far this thing is working amazing ly. I sold my I pad and bought this and wiw what a difference. I guess its more honey comb I'm impressed with but this tab feels solid. I like how its a little bigger because it makes the tablet feel less like a toy

Went to a BB today and played around with one. Seems quite a lot of people had messed around with it and it was a bit herky jerky. I tried playing Heroes of Sparta, which was preinstalled, and it was a bit laggy and certain elements were blacked out (rocks, trees). Then when I quit it went to a black screen with nothing on it, although the hardware volume buttons did bring up the volume bar.

What I did get a pretty good impression of was the hardware. I really liked it. It wasn't too heavy, yet it didn't feel cheap. I like the metallic finish. Wish I would have gotten a bit more of a chance to check out the software.

I've got a 500gb external hard drive plugged into mine via the USB port. Works great!! Just had to convert it to FAT32 for it to work with android.

How do you convert hard drives to FAT32? The options in Windows are for a lot less than 500gb total conversion. I think about 30gb.

Have the drive plugged in. Go to my computer-> Right click on the drive-> go to format

I received UPS tracking number from BB. The A500 is shipping from Fresno, CA and expected delivery is Tuesday, 4/26. So I should have my tablet waiting for me at home when I get off work, unless it has to be signed for and that means a trip to UPS Tuesday nite.

I had to use a program on the web to convert it coz as you said, windows wouldn't allow me to do it with that size. As for loss it still picks it up as 466gb so not too bad. I bought it new with my tablet so I'm not sure about losing stored data but I'd say you would as its a re format.
Only issue I seem to be having with this tab is the delayed typing. Writing this message now I'm around 5 or 6 letters in front on what's actually on the screen as I type? Seems very slow to react but its only on certain pages, using talk and skype chat is fine?

Yeah if I was to try this out I would probably just get a new external in case the wife is using the external i have connected to the WDTV box. These machines do peak my curiousity but the lack of netflix and hulu is what's killing it for me. I've heard about playon but I'd rather have dedicated apps for those programs. Yes, I do have an ipad but I am not loyal to any brand...i go with whoever can suit my needs. The appstore is waaay ahead in apps but I only use a handful of apps anyway and most of the apps I use seem to be available on both.

No Netflix is becoming a big issue. It's not that they can't build the app, it's the the security of the content. Like anyone is going to stream Netflix content to their tablet and steal it. There are far better ways to steal this stuff.

LOL...thank you! And if people are going to steal it I'm sure they won't steal the very limited selection of titles that netflix is offering. They really need to get this sorted out. If the honeycomb tablets had netflix and hulu i would have sold my ipad and joined the club.

No doubt. I don't use my wife's iPad for much, but during midnight feedings with my daughter I'd stream netflix all the time. I've got two Roku boxes and watch a lot of streaming so although I don't NEED Netflix to stream to a tablet, it's a big black mark against them.

I'm starting to narrow my search, and think I've settled on the 7" size, so while I'm waiting for those to come out I hope they get this sorted.

Just stopped by the local Best Buy during lunch to see if they had the Acer out. They have it set up right next to the Xoom.

Feels really nice in the hand, it's heavy, but everything is heavy compared to the iPad 2 and it's hard to really tell with the retractable tether holding it to the table. I didn't mess with it too much, since I've played with Honeycomb on the Xoom already, and without attaching a Google account you can't really test email and calendar.

Price wise, the Xoom is going to have to come down. Just having it sit there next to the Acer with a $150 higher price is going to kill it. Most people won't know about the 16 - 32 gig storage. Didn't try the USB host, but everyone says it works as expected.

I also got a chance to hold the BB Playbook.

Even though I've seen the videos, it's much smaller than I was expecting. Feels REALLY solid and nice in the hand. Web surfing was ok but I don't know if that was the browser of the connection.

The death of the Playbook is going to be it's reliance on a tethered Blackberry for email and contacts. It's great for a company that wants to issue the Playbook as a intermediate device for execs who don't want to carry a laptop to meetings, but need better email access. But for the average Joe, who just wants a tablet it probably won't work. I'm ASSUMING that they will figure out a way to make it more accessible in the future. But if I already used a BB as a working phone I would really consider it.

Yep, but I see no option to convert a large drive (using Vista). I used to do this all the time, in the XP days of much smaller drives, but have not seen the option with big drives. A very common issue, especially since tablets started offering host function and the need for FAT32.

1. Netflix is controlled at device level by Netflix. An app will only work if the device is ID'd as an approved device on Netflix servers. The only Android device so far will be the Revolution. As long as the chipset has the needed DRM keys, it can work, but the OEM must pay for device to be approved. LG is the only one so far to do so. The 8255/8655 and the Tegra 2 have the needed specs for Netflix.

2. I am impressed with the Acer A500 and love the fully functioning USB host and micro USB for data transfer- built-in the tablet. The microsd works fine too. 64gb thumbdrives and 32gb microsd work fine :). Nice not having to deal with a keyboard attachment to get the function (The Asus is nice too, none the less).

I did not have that issue. Were it not for Flash not working in any browser except the stock version, I would be doing good right now.

Update: Apparently Flash only works with Honeycomb stock browsers.

Hi,

go to <top righthand corner> click <Apps> (the icon next to the plus sign)
go to <settings> <Langauge & input> (the 10th icon down with an "A" in it)
<select> <English> (the second from the top)

cheers :)
