Acer Iconia A500

Well I'm sad to say I've got a refund for mine. The battery just wasn't holding up to what Acer claimed it could do. I was losing charge in standby and even with it turned off. I was struggling to get 5-6 hours out of it.

Such a shame, sure you must have had a dodgy tab, mine is lasting well on the battery, using it most nights I'm easily getting a couple of days usage so probably 8 - 10 hours of simple surfing.

Guess it depends what you're using it for.

1. Netflix is controlled at device level by Netflix. An app will only work if the device is ID'd as an approved device on Netflix servers. The only Android device so far will be the Revolution. As long as the chipset has the needed DRM keys, it can work, but the OEM must pay for device to be approved. LG is the only one so far to do so. The 8255/8655 and the Tegra 2 have the needed specs for Netflix.

2. I am impressed with the Acer A500 and love the fully functioning USB host and micro USB for data transfer- built-in the tablet. The microsd works fine too. 64gb thumbdrives and 32gb microsd work fine :). Nice not having to deal with a keyboard attachment to get the function (The Asus is nice too, none the less).

The problem with Netflix is the most people don't care why, they just care that it doesn't. And if it's going to be a device by device thing, then Android will never be able to claim that it has Netflix. That will have to be a specific spec for each device, which sucks.

Get over it movie studios! don't you understand that you're slitting your own throats?

I'm very much drawn to the USB Host functionality, portable storage is still very much a reality in the this word, and having to email something to myself just to get it on the tablet (or phone) is a pain. The only thing I can really think I'll use it for normally would be with my DLSR. Although I'm also looking into the the EyeFi card that now can be used for direct transfer to a phone or tablet.

@Wonder,

Battery is working fine for me. I left the device on last night, it went in sleep mode and battery was 87% this morning. This is with GPS on as well, so there must be a good sleep mode. Perhaps a rogue app is causing the battery issues?

I was pretty much just surfing here and there. Nothing else, leave it in standby or turn it off sometimes. It would lose lots over night. In fact I could just switch it on and leave it, and within 10 mins I'd lose another 3% battery.

Didn't have anything installed really that should cause it. I think the battery must've had issues on mine. I'd run at 25% brightness, and wifi was set to turn off when screen goes off. GPS was off too.

Hi,

Some app is running in the background your unit. You might want to do a reset.

It is also better to put the tablet to sleep, powering off and on consumes more batt.

My wifi is always on, brightness set to 30%, weather widget updates every 3 hours, 2 email accounts running in the background, Guardian Anywhere app updates everyday @ 4am and i only drain 5% overnight (sleep mode).

cheers :)

Just got this tablet today for myself works well and is well priced. Haven't seen anyone anyone in Australia posting anything about it yet. But I'm sure there will be plenty soon great tablet.;)

Does anyone got PSX4DROID to work on the Acer Iconia A500?

Tried here with no luck!

I will try it later, but besides eboot file support that psx4droid has, FPse is FAR better and worth the money. FPse is eboot file adoption away from an A+. It is an A now and psx4droid is a C- at best (I also have both on the g Tablet)

Right now I hate hate that the highest utube vid I can watch without lag is 480p. I put a file on the HDD of the iconia and I converted it to screen specs and in HD... MAJOR LAG the pad2 has flawless HD video vevo apps and vids I put on look great on the pad2 and the xoom. This tablet doesn't seem to cut it with video grrr. Doesn't the xoom have a 600mhz front side bus? Any other things it has that I passed over? The USB is what sold me cause I can tether my phone and charge it too cause 4g lte drains battery. Thanks but I am going to be getting the xoom once I get my full 2 weeks of use to compare.

I don't know where the complaints about the battery are coming from? I've had mine on for 23 hours now with the wifi connected, screen brightness on the auto setting, been using it just for web browsing, email and music and I still have 25% better left?
Extremely good batteries if you ask me.

My only major issues are the typing lag ( which is hell on this site!) And the web browser closing without warning?

Hmmm...i'll try youtube but i know i didnt have any video problems with the one i sampled last night. Played great with moboplayer and I did not need to adjust the movie file at all. The only thing I had to do was convert my external to fat32 and that took all of 2 minutes.

i bought an A500 last Saturday and the wifi would stop working after it came out of sleep mode. It would still show it was connected and i could see it was still connected to my router, but it would not transmit. I had to turn off the wifi, turn it back on and then it would immediately work. The other issue I had was when it was in sleep mode the screen would turn off...then turn back on 30 sec later and stay on for 10 seconds...then turn back off....and repeat that process over and over whether it was charging or not. (New to android & tablets in general...is it supposed to do that?)
So, I returned it to best buy for a replacement on Monday May 1st. When I showed up to the store, there was another guy there who brought his back because the power button didn't work out of the box. What are the odds, I tell myself to meet someone else who has a problem with the same machine as me? Whatever...I got the new right before the store closed, go home and charged it over night. Woke up the next day to play with it and noticed that the bottom center of the glass was starting to lift away...SERIOUSLY!? I took the brand new replacement back to best buy again and just got a refund. They did try to sell me on the XOOM and a open box XOOM that someone returned, but they couldn't tell me if there was a problem with that machine...so now I'm tablet-less and wondering if there's something else I should spend my money on...Or just wait.

Seems a solid build to me and much better than the Transformer, which buildwise reminds me of the Archos 101.

In fact, given both Asus and Acer history, I, would have expected the reverse scenario.

I'm going to be ordering mine tomorrow! :) And hopefully I'll have it in my keen little mitts by the end of the week.
