Ads in android games

Hi guys:

As an android developer, i would like to know from the user point of view which are the ads format you hate or like the most.

What can you say about banners, intersticials, app icons, push notificacions, appwalls, etc?

Which ones you dont really mind to be there and which ones you hate?

Thank you very much for your opinions!

Idealy there would only be an ad at the start each time you open the app, maybe one in Settings.
What i wont accept is ads that invade my phone outside of the app. Adding bookmarks or icons, push notifications etc

Any ads must be inside the app. I uninstall anything that uses push, creates bookmarks, etc. A banner ad in the settings menu or app's main screen is okay; But not while using the app. e.g. Angry birds in-game ads. An interstitial when first launching the app is okay, but they are annoying when used in between every loading screen.

I'm not clear on what an appwall is, or what you mean by app icon.

What i really like is when devs put some faith in their app, offer it for a free, fully functioning ad-free trial for say a week then you need buy an unlock key or a ful version. I find that classy :)

As others have said, the absolute requirement is that ads are limited to within the app. Anything at all appearing when I am not running the app is an instant uninstall and 1-star rating, no second chances.

I probably find interstitials more annoying than banners, but others may differ. I prefer to buy apps rather than have ads, but know there are many who do not.

For me, if I had to choose one ad, it would be a banner at the top that didn't interfere with the game.

However if it's push ads outside of the app, that's an automatic uninstall no matter how much I like the app. Can't tolerate an app that takes over my device with ads.

I agree, uninstall all apps that send spam notifications even if I love them. I don't mind banner ads but hate the ones that are a banner then go full screen all the time.

Push ads are a no-no.

And ads that block certain parts of the interface making it hard to control the game. In fact I prefer the ads on loading screens as opposed to other places. It gives me somthing to look at other than the loading bar or wheel.

Ads are bad anywhere in an app, a paid ad free version should always be offered for people like me that despise ads (I use AdFree which blocks ads, but I always support devs and buy apps if they offer a paid ad free version of any apps I use).

Also, anything outside the app (homescreen bookmarks, notification spam, etc), the app instantly gets a 1* review and flagged as spam in Google Play.

Thanks guys for your replies!

I am working on a puzzle game with a similar concept to Flow Free. Would you mind if a put a banner ad during in-play (no risk of miss tapping the banner or visually interfer with the game experience) + a full screen intersticial everytime after completing 2-3 levels?

Btw, i know everybody hate push ads hehe, but they seem to be the most profitable. anyway ,after reading yours comments (and many others), ill leave them out for sure!

Leo can i ask how ad payments work mate?
Like does the dev get a payment for a) each download of your app b) each view of an ad c) each time an ad is tapped by a user or d) something else?
ive always wondered. Cheers

You can ask me!

Paid apps, the dev gets paid for each download(with google it's 2/3 the price of the app)

Ad supported it's per click(whatever the the advertiser bid: $.01 up to $1 per click)

In app purchase is per purchase(with google it's 2/3 the price of the purchased item)

So it depends which route you take when you design your apps.

Ah thanks mate. so its in your interest for the user to click on the ad. I might start clicking them then just out of support. Even if it is for Candy Crush Saga  lol

Yes, coding everything, designing images, editing sound and music, and testing etc for a game takes a lot of work. Here are the times it took for me to write:

FlaTank 1.5 months
vBonsai 3 months
Hail of Gunfire 1.5 months

I run a couple of businesses during the day so when I'm making a game, I'm doing it between 4 and 8 hours after work. I would guess it's the same story for the other indie devs out there that don't actually do it for a living. We pour our hearts into our stuff. I use my blog unkand.com to help call attention to work of unknown devs.

One day I hope to make enough money with my apps I can do it only.

Yeah i understand man. Im ashamed to say i used to use cracked apps until i started usin sites like this, chattin to devs etc. Now i appreciate and respect the work that goes into it
The tiny cost of android apps is a small price to pay for what we get from them and putting up with advertising is a valid way to pay for them. Now that i know how ad payments work, ill defo tap on the ads of any ad supported apps that dont have a Pro version :)

Actually, a lot of developers are being payed "per action" instead of per click nowadays. Per action normally means install the advertised app but could also mean to also do sth particular like fill a questionnaire, etc..

So if you want to REALLY support us, click the ad an download the app. A download coming from the UK is very valuable ($0.5 for the dev approx). ;)

Thank you for your support!

I'm not clear on what an appwall is, or what you mean by app icon.

Appwall is a full screen ad that shows you a list of app to download.

App icon is basically a second app that is installed in your device. It normally works as a browser to show you adds. You must give your permission before installing the app icon, so dont be scared it will automatically appear after download an app :p. (if you say no, nothing happens, you can still use the "original" app).

Do we have to install the downloaded app though? :)
EDIT, sorry i missed the "install" part. Can we uninstall it straight away?
