All Things Froyo

Can someone point me in the right direction as far as getting this downloaded, installed, and configured?

I'd appreciate it. :)

Pretty easy. Just have you phone set to ask for connection type when usb connection is detected. Launch Kies, Connect phone,Select kies/firmware update option and just click the update button in Kies. Just know only 32 bit versions of Vista and Win 7 are supported for phone to connect properly.

I just got off the phone with AT&T tech support asking about the upgrade. They said that I don't need to worry about not having a 32 bit OS on my PC because the update will be available OTA....

I'm still going to try and get mini kies working.

Re: Kies...good idea. I'm not sure I'd trust an OTA transmission (if, in fact it's offered) in light of all the problems, including the creation of bricks, that the last OS update resulted in. I'd be surprised if OTA were an option. Too risky.

From Samsung Service on Facebook

"Attention Captivate users: Samsung and AT&T are pleased to confirm that the Android 2.2 upgrade will be available tomorrow (2/24). We'll be posting more info as soon as possible."

Fork you.

Is that a reply to Samsung Service on Facebook or your sig?

i got kies mini to work on my win7 x64. but samsung said there will be directions on their website tomorrow. im sure there will be a way to get it

The cached Web page content that was posted in error last week included a download button for what will either be the current Kies mini or an updated one for Froyo.

I've been following the Epic froyo update on the forums and there have been many comments that the GPS has been significantly improved, and I don't believe there has been a single comment that the GPS has gotten worse. I wouldn't think that the Captivate update would be different. :)

The leaked Froyo Web page said nothing, zero, zilch about GPS. I'd guess that it means that nothing's been improved, otherwise it would be a major content component. This is assuming that the premature page release stays static.

Okay so I haven't been using Android as long as all you veterans in here... but I just read this on Android Central. I don't know what Kies is. I don't own a computer. So I want to know the reason is why some of you object to an OTA update. If OTA isn't available, then am I $hit out of luck getting the upgrade? If it is available and my phone bricks, how would I downgrade back down to 2.1?

Appreciate the answers in advance. Thanks everyone.

Kies is [allegedly] a software program that will, in this case, enable the upgrading [allegedly] of the Captivate from Eclair to Froyo.

OTA has proven to be unreliable, therefore should be avoided. That said, I'd guess that Samsung will avoid it for you as history is the best teacher.

You're not SOL. Just use a friend's computer.

If your phone bricks you won't have to worry about downgrading back down to 2.1. It's not called a "brick" for nothing.

Kies work sure but does your phone connect?

I was just able to get my Win 7 64-bit to connect to the phone through mini kies. Mini Kies shows my phone model and my phone number. At the bottom of the mini kies screen its got a "Phone Upgrade" icon which is grayed out. I'm hoping that button will become available tomorrow for the upgrade.

So they have to have that Kies program to do it?

I successfully updated to 2.1-upgrade just fine OTA. Maybe since there's extra features on 2.2 instead of just "fixes", that might have something to do with it?

Yes, but that's a no-brainer. The official release page will have a download link to obtain the program.

Too many individuals were not as fortunate and phones needed to be exchanged. It has nothing to do with extra features. Code is code.

From what I have heard from folks who could be in the know, the 2.1 upgrade was about 12MB. The 2.2 release is closer to 250.

If that is true, not sure I want that going OTA

Don't know if this will work for some people, but I find that if I connect my phone to my PC and select kies as the connection option, then wait for the phone to appear in explorer before starting Kies mini, it works for me. Otherwise it never notices the phone. I'm on Windows 7 64-bit. When I run Windows XP in VMware (Emulating a Pentium III) it runs fine no matter what order I do that in

The driver I have is SAMSUNG Android USB Composite Device version 5.2.0.5

This Thursday AT&T will push an Android 2.2 firmware update for Samsung Captivate users, leaving Verizon's Fascinate as the only member of the Samsung Galaxy S family of smartphones still using Android 2.1.
On Wednesday @AT&T tweeted: "Captivate owners--the Android 2.2 upgrade is coming tomorrow! We'll post a link to install it as soon as we get it! http://go-att.us/g6yt"

I used the driver at the following link but I did so many things I'm not sure it that's what finally did it, let me know if it works for you.

The absolute last thing I did before I got it connected was switching from "mass storage" to "kies (firmware update)" in the USB settings (Settings>Applications>USB Settings).

So you're not natively running in Win 7 but through Win XP emulation?
edit: Ahh I understand.

Thanks I think I have this driver but I'll check.
