I have to say that this is unreal, why could'nt samsung do this? from a cold start takes about 45secs to a minute to get a lock, but that is as far as I can complain considering I have not been able to get a lock in two months. Thanks for this post. 1 additional thing I did that may have or may not have helped was added the paid version of gps boost, only bad thing is that it runs in the background on startup but it did go right to the notification bar on launch of GPS and I had a lock in twenty seconds:D. seeing so many sats around me, my best advice to anyone who tries this is to do EXACTLY what it says and BUY the root file manager. Thanks again.;)

4 days after I did the GSM Reset, GPS is still working great. 6-10 satellite locks within seconds. Most of them with an SNR between 30-40.

Hopefully it stays this way.

I think that applies to a small minority, make sure you have wireless networks disabled. I'm working with my local store to see what can be done, pushing hard to get the phone returned or exchanged for an IPhone4. I'm done waiting, it's all over the web, GPS is truly busted and only Samsung can fix it.

Hey Guys,
So today I had a meeting for work (work for ATT) at which the District Field Marketing Manager for Samsung was there to give a demo on the cappy for all of the not so tech savvy employees. A bunch of us were given them to demo and show customers. As he was going through his powerpoint of all the great features on the phone, he had one slide dedicated to the update. Low and behold one of the fixes was indeed the GPS. So for me this puts a close on the fact that this was the fix Samsung was promising. After he finished his presentation I brought the issue up to him about me and several other users (you guys) really experiencing no fix for the GPS. I also asked if there was a difference from manually pushing the upgrade and waiting for ATT to push it; the answer was NO, it is the same thing. I explained that I was still not getting locks therefore rendering GPS and Nav useless. At this point in time his only response to me was it should have fixed it but send me your IMEI and I will look into it. So I just sent him an email about 30 mins ago about this issue. I will keep you up to date with and further developments. Hope this clears some things up...

Cliffs: Spoke with samsung in person and update inculded GPS fix and the way you received the updated didnt matter its the same exact thing.

Interesting news on the IntoMobile site - the Samsung Vibrant (T Mobile) GPS fix is available online via KIES.

"It looks like Samsung kept up to its word and now the much-wanted GPS fix is online for Vibrant users. It

Same GPS problem with Samsung Epic, as well as the denial:
Epic 4G: problems so far -- and a few solutions -- Engadget

Actually, the Epic does not share the same GPS symptoms as the Captivate, Vibrant or I9000. The Sprint phone was not released until much later, and it was supposed to have Samsung's purported fixes -- including Broadcom's rewritten GPS driver -- when it shipped.

There are, in fact, some discrete GPS bugs on the Epic. I think that while fixing the worst of the problems, there were two new issues introduced, which are well defined and replicable. The worst of those can be worked around. That does not absolve Samsung and Sprint of responsibility for curing those problems, but it is not true that these are the same problems that have plagued the early GSM variants of the Galaxy S.

Meanwhile, the anecdotal record of the Verizon Fascinate is not entirely clear, but users are not in open revolt over the GPS. Some of the anecdotal problems reported might just be pilot error, which would be understandable given Verizon's horribly obfuscatory user interface and documentation.

I follow the GPS issues on all Galaxy S platforms as closely as I can. I used to own two Vibrants and tested their GPS extensively. I now own an Epic and test it rigorously, and it is much better. FWIW, from reading the forums closely it is apparent that the Vibrant symptoms never were the same as the Captivate's which seem to resemble those of the I9000 more closely.

In other words, all GPS bugs are not equal, and neither are all Galaxy S firmwares.

Good post. I have been following the other Galaxy S variants in forums and to the best of my understanding the issues with gps are not all one and the same, they seem to be specific issues for that variant of the Galaxy S phone.

Seems like my GPS was working after the update. And now the last few days it seems like its back to crap. Taking forever to lock and having trouble keeping a lock. What a BS update fix.

If it helps.... the information I was told was that the Broadcom drivers first needed correction. Then the filesystem needed tweaking which then brought on another problem as the filesystem was (is) problematic anyhow and needed looking into first.
In other words they couldn't get a GPS update until the filesystem had first been addressed.
As time went by it became closer and closer to Froyo being released, which again would be bringing in changes.
As such all further updating went hand-in-hand with Froyo.
It's taking time and it's only right that owners and would be owners are troubled and frustrated.

I really do feel for those like Alexander who are in a time-line, wondering whether or not to risk it.
I have no idea the exact date and obviously no idea if it will all work in the end.
My best guess is it will solve quite a few problems but there are bound to be either new one's brought in or further work to be done on problems which have been worked on.

Depending on the hardware you are looking for ~ if it's already a proven platform (i.e. the Desire) then I would say go for it.
If however the hardware is not yet out (i.e. Desire HD) then I'd be tempted to get the GSG and try it out...... If it does not fit in with your requirements, return it and get the other phone of your choice.

Sounds plausible. Time will tell.

Was looking over at the Vibrant forum, looks like the GPS fix didn't do much for them either. Time to jump ship and let Samsung sink on its own, why keep contributing money to a company that has sat on this issue since the phone was released back in Asia then EU then 3 months ago in the US.

I've been considering the jump, but I'm having difficulty settling on another phone, given all the other great features of the Captivate

It definitely would require a carrier shift too.

Argh....

The more complaint tickets they have on record, the hotter the fire under their asses to get this fixed.

I did the update last weekend. I had a 700 mile trip from Tennessee to Michigan yesterday. I was in the middle of nowhere and took about 10 seconds to find my location (use wireless off and stock settings) and a few minutes to get a lock. Once I got a lock, I didnt do nothing until I got to Manchester, TN for breakfast and closed nav. After breakfast, I got a lock right away. The nav was real accurate on the way home with a few hiccups (told me to get off the freeway and turn around). But I must say, the nav worked for me like this before the update. So the new firmware did not fix the gps.

The Captivate is an otherwise lovely phone that unfortunately shipped with a non-functioning GPS. Weeks ago, they promised a software update to fix this months-long issue (the Galaxy S had problems in Europe before its US release), but to no avail.

I spoke with Samsung earlier today. Samsung admits that the JH7 update that just came out did not fix the GPS issues in the Captivate, and claims that another update would come out at an unknown date. Totally unacceptable.

Unhappy with your broken phone? Let's all call Samsung!

Sounding a little obsessed with GPS, I mean really... the Captivate does so many things well. Why so emotional?

Why am I not surprised by that type of response from them. I've called 3 times this week to both AT&T and Samsung. Just spoke to the store manager at the store I got my phone from, expecting his call shortly. I spoke to them yesterday and they called back later in the day to say my account was being reviewed. Told them my options were, take the phone back or IPhone4. I was not interested in getting another Captivate, in fact, pointed them to several websites which cover the GPS issue and Samsung's statement about not exchanging phones. The store manager confirmed this as well, that they were told not to exchange them and after doing some researching today, Sprint is now doing the same. Read several Vibrant posts about the same topic.
