whats the official line here, ive seen what appears to be different looking products to achieve this..?

What do i need?

I bought a non branded otg adapter and a Samsung s2 MHL HDMI adapter and the otg is great. It works with memory sticks; keyboard and mouse; my digital camera... but I could not get the hdmi adapter to do anything. Does anyone know if it should work?

Only the 11-pin.

See here, at 19:15 (link in video description):

You need an adapter for your 5-pin MHL adapter (or a new 11-pin adapter, or an Allshare Cast Dongle (see that at 37:54).

Samsung announced a new smart dock today for $99.00 that has 3 usb ports and an hdmi port on it.
Yes just seen this on facebook. Think thats the best option as you can just use a standard lead and also have option to connect usb devices to the note at the same time.

I did a search for it and one UK dealer has it listed but not available yet, but they will email you as soon as it is in stock. The connectivity options allow you to effectively use your GN2 as a a computer if you have a monitor or TV.

All my 720P mkv movies are larger than 4 GB's. I watch them on a 50" TV and they look great. Does it make sense that if I watch it on 5.5" screen that I should be able to shrink it down to .4 GB and it would be just as good.

What is the smallest size that would still be HD and what's the easiest way to shrink the files?

I've spent a couple of hours looking, but I keep winding up at sites promoting their own video conversion software or advanced discussions about mux/demuxing.

Thanks for any help.

I received my Allshare Cast Dongle this morning from UPS. Since I don't have my Note II yet (thanks, Verizon) I used my housemate's S3 to test it out.

It works great visually. There doesn't seem to be too much quality degradation in the video and will be great for viewing photos and videos without any buffering issues going through Allshare Play. Unfortunately, the audio is streamed in low quality. This means you won't be playing Spotify or other music applications through it unless you completely do not care about the quality. I was disappointed in this as it was one of the main reasons I wanted the dongle. It will get plenty of use otherwise.

I should mention I have a Samsung 7000 Series 55" that should have Allshare Cast built in. I just decided to get the dongle rather than wait for a software update that may never come.

The Display latency delay is quite high too.

The reviews on Amazon are not good for folks who thought they might use this for gaming

I'm hoping the Smart Dock with provide a better AV experience - but of course that path requires a wired connection.

I would never think to get this for gaming since I would fully expect lag to exist. That was a common complaint with WiDi on Laptops as well.

The Smart Dock is an excellent suggestion since I could use a keyboard and mouse with that. I will probably wind up ordering that eventually.

Can't buffer games content, so the Allshare Cast Dongle is not a great option. For casual games I found it sufficient but stuff like Dead Trigger was nigh on unplayable.

Smart Dock and MHL are a much better bet for gaming (I have both at present, until I have to return the Dock to Samsung in a few days).

If you are never going to use MHL, the Smart Dock, DLNA, Allshare, or the Allshare Cast Dongle to playback HD video from the phone to an external monitor then you should definitely reduce their size. You could simply format an SD card or pendrive to exFAT and load the full files on that for playback also as an alternative that doesn't require down-sampling.

Im not an expert but I convert all of my 720p to mkv max 1gig with Vidcoder / Handbrake (all for free), and its great for 22inch monitor & note2, I gues 350-700mb should be sufficient enough for note screen

What is wrong with 4gb? I.e. I also have a lot of movies in 720/1080 and that is one reason I want to get the Note. I was hoping it could handle the large bit rate files without issues so I DONT have to down convert. I haven't recieved my VZW note yet. Is there an issue with large files I should be concerned with other than they are large files?
I have some movies that are 8gb. I don't want to spend time down converting them. I did buy a 64gb card to hold the large movies. I have a droid X (1ghz single core) and it will not play anything over about 1gb without lagging and falling on it's face.

You can play large files, people have watched 6 and 8GB movies on their S3/Note 2. I haven't watched a whole one that was that large, but I did copy a 6GB one over when I first got my S3 to check that it was properly supporting exFAT card formatting and watched part of it without issues.

If you have Windows Vista or above, you can format the microSD card to exfat and it will support >2gb files.

If you format it on the phone, it uses fat32.

If you use a Mac, I think you are SOL.

Hey guys,

had a couple questions about using the note 2 with a TV. Specifically, I have NBA league pass on my phone (mobile pass) and am interested in hooking it up to my TV or 24" monitor.

1. What is the best way to connect the phone to the TV? I don't think I need all the capabilities of the Smart Dock or the Allshare Cast Wireless Hub. I was thinking of getting the HDTV Universal Adapter (11 Pin) - is this the right one to connect?

Also, what exactly is the Universal HDTV Adapter (5-pin) w/ 5-pin to 11-pin MHL Conversion Tip? What is this used for?

2. How exactly does the Note 2 convert video to a bigger screen? Curious if it will look all pixelated and blocky on a 42" or 50" HDTV?

1. Yes, the 11-pin connection one is the right MHL cable to get. The 5-pin one with 11-pin adapter will work also, and if you remove the 11-pin adapter part it will work with older MHL devices too (people who had older MHL cables can get the adapter so that their existing cable will work with the S3/Note 2, that is the main reason for it).
2. It outputs video at the videos native resolution, providing the source file is of high enough quality it should look good on the connected HDTV.

This might help you get a better idea:

Thank you sir - I will take a look!

Anybody figure out how to do this wirelessly yet? I was messing around with my AppleTV and Xbox yesterday to see if I could get wireless mirroring working. No joy!

I was able to wirelessly play a movie using the DLNA feature of the phone with my PS3. I first tried enabling Allshare on the phone. No love. Just above the Allshare feature I saw "nearby devices, share your media files via DLNA". I turned that on and the phone told me it was organizing my files for sharing. After several minutes it was ready to go and it showed up on my PS3 (both the phone and PS3 were on the same network of course). I found my GN2 listed on my PS3 and navigated to the movie/video folder and was able to choose a movie to watch. I played it and was even able to fast forward.

I would think you could do the same with your Xbox, but don't know for sure. I don't think you will have any luck with your AppleTV unless it is jailbroken.
