Help Ally V9 SW update.

OMG this camera bug is driving me insane!!!
I checked Quick launch and nothing listed to the camera!
Getting pissy!!!

Wanted to share my latest discussion with Verizon/LG on the OTA 8 update:

Called Verizon customer service and the rep got a LG tech on the phone. After talking with the LG tech and reading out everything in the settings section of my phone, the LG tech confimred that my phone had not been updated - however, Settings/Abount phone/System Updates said there were no updates available for my phone, so both the LG tech and Verizon support person said there was nothing I could do other than return the phone and have Verizon order me another one - what a HUGE bummer.

If I have to return my phone I'll be tempted to get a phone with a chance of getting Android 2.2 - but I really like the Ally, and before I did something drastic I was wondering if someone from LG watching this thread might find a copy of the OTA8 file (or even OTA9) and let me try installing it myself (like the guys at Ally v9 Firmware Update - LG Forum - LG Mobile Phone Forums - Carriers - Verizon did)? I've got both the Windows and the Linux Android developer's kits already installed and working (I cross complied and installed my first working Android "C" program last week), so I think I'm technically competent to handle the update process.

It will be this weekend before I can get out to a Verizon store, so I'll keep checking back here to see if someone finds me an update file I can install myself.

Anyone else seem to have the problem of stuff constantly running in the backround since this update? If i go into my app killer and kill everything i can go back in like a couple mins later to find the same random stuff running again. Like amazon, back up assit, clock and so on. My phone wasnt like that before. that stuff would only show if i restarted my phone then i just kill them and they are done. kinda frustrating.

mine's been doing the exact same thing. i even uninstalled backup assist and it was STILL running in the background.

hey ive got the v9 update file but the lg update software wont install it. says phone model is not eligible to update. so if you can get it to work let me know. its too large of a file to upload here. ill upload on multiupload.com. ill post the link when its done uploading. says it will take 20 minutes.

UPDATE: File is now available for download on multiupload.com
DOWNLOAD REMOVED PM FOR INFO
click the link and get your download. and if you use firefox get the skipscreen add on it skips past rapidshare and all that. it works great. =)

anyway let me know of any progress you make on it thanks!

Thanks! I'll download it and see if I can figure out how to get it installed this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes.
hey travel rob im definitely interested in helping out on a manual install. im great with computers. and i was able to access fastboot on my phone. reply back if you would like some help.

i also noticed it had an lg download dll in there however lg download will not let you choose that dll. i tried different ways and it either doesnt see it or it wont even load the application. it sees the phone but wont let you upgrade without a bin file but the v9 fw is in a cab file and includes wdh and wdb files and the dll i was talking about. let me know if you would like some help.

thanks

I successfully manually updated my phone to V8 (I guess V9 was already taken down). I then was able to re-root my phone as I had done before. It can be a bit of a process (there's an update loop encountered, but just disconnect from internet after making USB connection).

I have the corporate calendar....tried the Amazon MP3 store, but it still sucks...but most importantly still have the Barnacle Wi-Fi tether!

Good luck!

~v

p.s. I really want to find a way to manually update to 2.2.....but can't seem to find anyone who has done it.

@vbplayr2000 the issue we're having is where it says our phone model is not eligible for upgrade in the manual update software after the ota update fails and leaves us with v6 instead of v8 or v9

To my knowledge nobody has made a 2.2 ROM for Ally.

@travel_rob and anyone else. i have sucessfully pushed the V9 software update to the phone. im tired and i wanna wait till morning before i post. ill type it tonight and post tomorrow.

Update: sadly this also breaks root. im stuck at the asroot2 portion like some others. bummer.

i will still post tomorrow

Disclaimer: I put my phone on the line to try this and it worked fine for me doing the steps i detailed below.
It is possible to brick your phone doing this so be careful. I am not responsible if you end up with a ~$500 paper weight.

You have been warned.

If you are still with me, here are the steps:

Step 1: If you haven't done so already download LINK REMOVED PM FOR INFO and save to the root of your C drive.

Step 2: download lg utils 0.4.2 from and save to the root of your C drive.

Step 3: Make a new folder labeled VS740.

Step 4: place both files you downloaded into that folder.

Step 5: Rename the cab file to VS740Zv9_04.cab.

Step 6: Extract the zip file's contents to this folder.

Step 6: Connect USB to phone.

Step 7: Run KP500-Utils-En.exe in compatability mode for Windows XP SP2 and as an Administrator.
(Only if you are not running windows xp)

Step 8: Choose option J.

Step 9: Type VS740 when it prompts for phone model number. Press Enter.

Step 10: Type VS740ZV9_04.cab when asked for the cab file. Press Enter.
(You do not have to tell it what directory the cab file is in)

Step 11: Type VS740ZV9_04 when prompted for the version. Press Enter.

Step 12: It should now tell you it is loading and the familiar lg manual updater screen will apear with a log window below
and start reading information from your phone and then it will flash it.
If the firewall says its trying to access the web allow it.
Your phone will switch to a screen that displays the LG and Verizon Wireless logo and say: DOWNLOADING! DO NOT UNPLUG!

It will flash the update to your phone and takes around 20 minutes to complete.
Once complete it will boot up and show the word android on the screen.

It looked like it hung at that screen but it didnt it just took a while. Around 10 minutes.

Once this is complete you may unplug your phone from USB.

Congratulations! If successful you now have v9 of the software. Enjoy!

Well after manually updating my phone to v9 my root was completely broken sadly. i couldnt even re root it. how ever, i was able to get a copy of the v6 fw before the v8 and v9 upgades went live and i SUCCESSFULLY downgraded my v9 fw back to v6. the steps are the same as above except with the v6 firmware in that folder and named VS740ZV6_01.cab and changing the numbers. im uploading v6 to multi upload as we speak. i will edit my post when i get the link =)

I will post the link and the steps tomorrow.

THANKS Death2All110 !!!

I tried all weekend to get the v9 update to work with the LG Mobile update program I downloaded from the LG corporate site, but was never able to get it to work. I don't know who Blackhorn is, but bless him for writing the KP500 flash program. Sadly for me I left my USB cable attached to my PC at home, and now I'm going to sit all day at the office watching the clock, waiting for the time when I can head home and try your update process ;)

I posted my issue on the LG Ally Forum (LG Ally Ver 8 OTA Update in progress - LG Forum - LG Mobile Phone Forums - Carriers - Verizon) and am going to follow up there with a pointer back to your process as it seems that I'm not the only person with this specific upgrade issue.

Good work Death2All110.

i will post the steps to downgrade to v6 as well. once i did that my phone downloaded v8 on its own and wanted me to install but before i do that im working with the mod Triton to extract its files. i already found the zip file. its in the /cache folder when you access through adb on the newly installed v6 software. i do notknow if it will install correctly yet because like i said im working with triton at the moment

Update: I chose install now when it prompted me to install the v8 update. SUCCESS! im getting ready to re root my phone now. if anyone would like here is the thread where im trying to assist triton

Update 2: Successully rooted my phone with V8 Software

Hey death2all110 or gndmepyon...

I also have the V9 firmware on the Ally and I'm following the steps to go back to V6. However, when I put in the entries in the command box and the LG manual updater screen comes up, it says to Connect the USB cable when it already is. I have tried to unplug and plug back in but still get the same message w/ debug on or off as well. How can I get the updater to see the Ally?

Thanks in advance...

Uh.. So it worked but now it keeps rebooting... I hope this is normal...

EDIT: Still hasn't stopped.

the screen shows up and I can do stuff for about 10 seconds then the android logo reappears and it loads for a few seconds and then is back. Then repeats...

Im just gonna let it sit for some time.

Still hasn't stopped...

EDIT: Fix seems to be a Hard Reset. (Google if you dont know how).

Its now downloading a update. I believe that an App I had was messing with the Downgraded android system causing it to reboot. And when the device restarted the app started and it crashed it again.

This scared the living crap out of me.

The Following is the log from the program. What is going wrong? i downloaded everything correctly. it says that it can't extract the cab file.

Nevermind, I got it to work by moving some files around. My phone now says ZV6, but the System Updates tab and the window updating program both say I have the latest version and there is nothing to update. Now what do i do?? I want version 8 with a root!

I also tried to root the phone, and it had the same exact problem as it did with version 9, where after the /data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh command, it would say something and then never say SUCCESS and just stay blank, and do nothing, and echo back whatever i type. except now when itype that it restarts the phone.

any help? i think i'm a lost cause.

@gaetawoo. try a hard reset (press and hold volume down+send+end) then once it reboots type *#*#checkin#*#* (*#*#2433546#*#*) send note that it wont dial out. it should display checkin success in the notification bar. and download the update pm me if you need more help
