Root Alright, you people begging for one-clicks...

thanx fellas. it was a minor pain. im sure the hard way prolly wasnt any harder, lol. not sure what did it... but i ran the rooter from within the download and that pushed the files. tried step 1 twice and the phone was no longer starting itself in bootloader, had to do it manually.kept getting the "main version older" error  restarted the computer and then step 1 worked. pushed files, booted itself into bootloader, then updated correctly. got the described error on step 2,ran it again and it was fine. 4th time was a charm for step 3 getting SU to work

im tired and my eyeballs and brain hurt from staring at my computer, but i feel pretty good about life at the moment :p

Dang man.. Seems complicated haha.. This is why I think manual is easier

Rooted!

It took me two days, and reading the forum from front to back twice. My problems were:

Having to install HTC Sync on my computer.
Learning what ADB is, even though it says "adb not required"
Patience, restarting the phone several times during the process.

if you count duplicates and devices belonging to other people, i am actually up to 12.

3 droids
3 g-tablets
2 incredibles
2 droid Xs
1 droid 2
1 thunderbolt

:o

Lot of devices in a short span. Do you have a buy two drinks, get your device rooted for free special? ;)

Need some help.

I followed all the steps 1-3 correctly using this method. But I still have no root. I try to use rom manager to flash CM Recovery but there's an error running privlaged commands.

What is S-OFF and how do I check if it's off?

Any other advice is appreciated. Thanks

Try restarting a few times

haha, nope. 25 cent draft PBR on wednesday night is the best deal we've got going at the moment. :p

i actually have 4 people waiting for me to root their devices right now, so i will have to add 2 more t-bolts, 1 more g-tab, and an atrix to the list soon. i guess it's my own fault for talking them into the purchases in the first place, lol.

check for s-off on the white screen(bootloader). get to it by powering off, then hold volume down while powering back on.

do you have the superuser in your app drawer? if not, then step 3 didnt work. you might try restarting your computer if all else fails, and try unplugging the phone before you run step 3 each time.also open your task manager and kill the adb.exe process before step 3 each time. one thing i did that i felt was helpful was keep an adb command window open so i could check and make sure it was still seeing my phone before each step. i did step 3 four times before it worked. when it pauses for a minute before flashing the "reboot 2 or 3 times" message, then youll know it prolly worked. the 3 times that id dint work,it went to that message almost imediately after starting step 3.

if you do have the su app in your drawer, open it up and make sure rom manager has permissions. if it does, youll see a green + next to it. if not it will have a red -. if you find it doesnt, touching the red - will change it to a green + :)

hope that helps.

Ok I'm stuck here. After step one it says it pushes the files and my phone boots into the bootloader. At that point I first select Fastboot and then I get and option for bootloader so I select that and then it give me an error that the png file is missing or not found or something along those lines. I've tried redoing step 1 multiple time with no luck. Am I doing something wrong in the bootloader?

did it take foreeeeeever to push the files? or do it real fast? sounds to me like maybe a bad download?

when you push power to get into fastboot,do you see first a blue status bar and then a yellow? if so,something is wrong with the files. if you dont see any status bars,at all, then the file dint get pushed to the phone. or possibly your card isnt FAT32(i assume thats still the rule?) so the phone didnt find it.

try making a file in your c drive,or on your desktop. put the root zip in it and extract all the files to it. then try running the rooter from within that file.

it is working properly when it takes a really, really long time to push the files and boot into bootloader.

What will this root method do? Remove the VZW bloat but leave the stock rom? Allow you to underclock with the screen off? Sorry for the newb questions...I've never rooted but am considering it.

Thanks!

This method will do nothing but root your phone, giving you superuser permissions and s-off. You will have stock firmware still, it's just unlocked, so to speak. You can then go into ROM Manager in your app drawer, flash ClockworkMod Recovery and make a nandroid backup (a picture of your current phone settings, screen setup and apps). From there you can remove the bloat yourself with Titanium Backup or Root Explorer, flash one of the 4 custom ROMs available and/or use setCPU to underclock your processor. Do not do any of the before mentioned without making a nandroid backup. A backup will always be your best friend, trust me.

PBR still exists? I did not know that

I remember it being only a beer that a Marine would love (after many days without a chance for a beer), but tasted GOOD from a keg :) Heck, even Old Milwaukee tasted good from a keg ;) :)

added:

I went to boot camp in SC :) Wonder if they have 4G at Paris Island? ;) :)

we actually sell a ton of it. according to our distributor, they are starting to have trouble keeping it in the warehouse. apparently it is getting popular again. don't ask me why, lol.

and no, 4G doesn't exist anywhere in SC yet. :(

Jesus H Christ after 4 days of trying unsuccessfully to get this piece rooted SUCCESS!!!! Time to do some massive debloating. Thanks to everyone for helping out with my questions!!!

Hmmm....perhaps not. I cant get clockworks backup installed. It tells me I dont have privies to do that...hmmm. Nor can I take screen shots...

In ROM Manager clear download cache and reboot 3 or 4 times. You should be good to go after that

Trying this now. I was just gunna do it again. I figured I couldnt be lucky enough to do it right the first time on my first attempt at rooting...lol.

Edit: Five restarts and a clear download cache after each one of them....still no dice.

"An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!"

Im just redoing it. Its simple as all hell, and Im not attached to anything on my phone quite yet. lol

I R FAIL. Im sorry. lol. For us noobs in here, dont forget to fix permissions...and if youre new to rooting like I am, DOWNLOAD THE PDF file and read over that. DONT FORGET to fix permissions...or you wont have root. lol.
