Help Always On Mobile Data

I use HTC Mail - that polls (so far as I know, that forces a data connection for the duration of the polling transaction) and doesn't even care if Background Data is off - so for that, nope, unchecking always on mobile data has never impacted me in any way I could see.

What is the correct setup to get Gmail working on the HTC mail app?
 
I regularly toggle this off when I drive unless I need it. My job has me driving to low LOW signal areas to meet with vendors etc and with the tower hopping it most definitely drains battery faster. Same with being at my house... low signal. While I know that the phone seems to turn off 3g in favor of wireless it does seem to still impact my battery to leave this on as my phone likes to seek for 3g and THEN seek wifi.. meaning every time I check my phone the 3g seeks for crap signal right before the wifi establishes connection.

I read somewhere that leaving wifi on without having an established connection doesn't affect battery drain that much. I think I may try this to confirm starting tomorrow. The only place I consistently use wifi is at home.

Just say you're setting up an IMAP/POP account - enter your email addr @gmail.com and password - then just press next.

It knows how to auto set a lot of account types so you don't have to. :)

I haven't checked the wifi thing. On my Evo, it was a battery killer to have it on when outside of wifi range - on my wife's Shift, it just doesn't seem to make a difference enough to warrant fiddling around with it.
 
Since the update (and the patch) my phone doesn't jump onto my home wifi automatically like it used to. I have to go into wifi buddy and "connect" to my home wifi. It used to do this automatically....anyone else having this issue? Is there a fix?

When you say "disable all your roaming guards", do you mean uncheck the domestic voice and data? Or are they to be checked?
 
if you want to ROAM on other carriers leave those checked.

likewise if you want to ROAM on international carriers, check those last two (additional charges apply and there is a warning that states this.)

Actually you want to un-check them to roam on other carriers. Roaming guards prevent you from roaming either by blocking it altogether or giving off a warning sound when you attempt to call while roaming in which case an additional keypress is required.
 
unchecking and then rechecking those options tells the user that additional charges may apply if this setting is selected. that to me means that you ARE able to roam on other networks with them checked.

i have roamed (probably on verizon) on the 3D before on a voice call recently so enabling these means you ARE allowed to roam on other networks.

Interesting. I get nothing when I check and un-check any of the options in the Roaming Guards menu. I know for a fact that I have roamed on Verizon with them unchecked without getting any warning messages or having to make any additional key presses. I tried calling a friend sitting next to me when I was showing roaming without the area code and got a message from Verizon Wireless. Then I tried again while still roaming but used the area code and the call went straight through.

I know for sure though that for the best roaming capabilities you should un-check all the guards. They're called roaming guards because they are exactly that, a guard to prevent you from accidentally roaming and incurring charges. Trust me, I deal with this every day.
 
How exactly do the charges work? I get roam alerts all the time. That usually scares me enough to turn off data because I don't want a $500 bill. I never roamed on my old Hero.
 
If you're on the $80/mo or $110/mo unlimited plans on your 3vo, you pay that no matter what and you don't care about roaming or anything else (except international calling) (or exceeding 450 land-line call minutes per month). (Prices reflect the $10 smartphone fee already added.)

If you're somehow NOT on one of those plans, good time to consider one, they're great.

You pay a flat rate and you don't care.

That roaming just means you're on the Verizon network. Roaming internationally is a different story. But Sprint and VZW have roaming agreements. I think VZW gets less on their side of the deal, but eh...
 
Yeah I pay the $10 for the phone plus I'm on the unlimited data family plan. So that means I'm good right? No worries for me or my wife's Optimus S?
 
so I assume we're still talking about this "always on mobile data" setting? And it has roaming ramifications?

Well then I really rest my case about this being the worst-named setting in existence. And I still don't really know what it does.

I think he was referring to the domestic voice and domestic data checks, which is right under the roaming option. If you un-check and then re-check this option you will see that warning.

Those settings are strange, they're not found in any other Sprint Android right now. The wording of them would lead me to believe that they shut off all voice and data, but that's not the case. It appears they may also be for roaming, but then the settings would be redundant to the guard settings in the menu just above. :confused:

I agree they are strange. This is what confused me in the first place. I don't remember seeing it worded like that on the EVO. I sold my EVO so I can't check and be sure.But for now I will leave it checked, since it came like that.
 
I have a Galaxy 550 and I cannot un-check the Enable always-on mobile button. It isn't fully lit up like other icons (light grey and bright green) its a dulled down colour but definitely not the flat grey/white that means it's off. I tried to restore factory settings but it still won't let me turn it on or off - it remains in this weird stasis.

Thoughts?
 
inkki, i suggest you post this in the galaxy forum. we dont not want to cross-pollinate :p different settings/tips in this evo only thread as it may cause confusion.
