Root Am I too stupid to Flash a ROM ??

I don't know what the heck I am doing wrong but for the life of it I can't get a flashed ROM to work.

I have been reading up on so many threads that my head is spinning. I think I am missing something here.

Anyways, EVO 4G rooted with Unrevoked, current stock software is 3.30.651.3, stock kernel.

I want to get CM7RC4.

The last try was with CM7RC2 and after I flashed, wiped, NAND backup and all that jazz the phone booted up but I didn't have a dialer.

Can someone just briefly tell me what files I need to flash in what order to get a fully working CM7RC4 on my EVO?
I got ROM Manager installed so instructions to use that would be awesome :-)

I know there are tons of threads on how to do all that but most of them bounce around all over and seem to confuse me more than they help :(

Thanks !!

Im by far not an expert, but here's some of the things they will ask

What Recovery are you using?
Did you wipe davlik, cache?

I have ClockworkMod 3.0.0.5

Yup, I did wipe davlik and cache. I followed a straight forward write up but in that write up some things were a bit vague or assumed one knows. I might have made a mistake or used some files that might not work together.

Also, you I cannot answer your question ref CM7. But I will say that you should get familiar with the recovery method you are using and flash all things manually through recovery. That is ultimately what RM does and you are just adding steps and potentially causing problems by doing it.

My other suggestion would be to try a basic Sense ROM like Myns or Miks just to get some practice. They are stable and they usually flash without a hitch. Again, I know nothig about CM or any AOSP ROMs but I know enough that they usually require a little extra work since you are "forcing" them onto this phone and they are usually ports from other phones with things that aren't functional.

I see. So should I dump ROM Manager and just use manual recovery? Do I also need to remove ClockworkMod? If so, how do I do that ?

I didn't know that there are differences in ROMs as far as flash procedure is concerned. I thought they all get put on the phone the same way and that they just differ in functionality and looks.

I chose the CM7 because I like the Gingerbread type theme ;-)

If you want to check to see if you have the most up to date radios, go for it. But I am willing to bet if you just rooted and were all updated prior to rooting your radios are fine. ALso, if there is any way you can brick your phone, flashing radios is THE one way that I know of. If you bork a radio flash, your phone is dead! So don't do it unless you need to.

Clockworkmod or AmonRA is your choice.

And yes, all flashing procedures are the same regardless of ROM(generally speaking). Things don't always go perfectly. If you are hellbent on CM7, then I suggest you wipe and try again. Or better yet, redownload the file and wipe and try again. Also, did you use Kings "Reformat all" .zip? That does help clean things up a bit...just another little witches brew to help things go smoothly.

Did you read about the ROM itself??? Maybe this is a known issue and you have to do some extra work to restore the dialer??? Those sort of things are not uncommon. Just brainstorming here. And also to let you know that not everything comes out perfectly all the time.

The more I think about this and find threads all over the place the more I think it might be too overwhelming to sort this all out.

Maybe I just will wait for the official Gingerbread release ;-)

Having said that, I can't even get the latest OTA to install because of my root. Is there a simple way to get my phone back to 100% updated stock ?

I think the easiest way to figure out your problem is if you tell us step by step what you have done, in detail.

I consider myself relatively tech savvy and the last update I was doing I was trying to flash a ROM for the DInc onto my EVO. Needless to say it wasn't working and was nothing but frustration. The kind help of everyone on the forums sorted it out for me though!

Well there we go, your radios among other things need updated. You can flash them separately but I would go to the link in my sig and flash sprint lovers. It will update everything at once. Make a backup first including wimax. If you are on clockwork 3.0.0.5 it will do this automatically. Then wipe everything and flash sprint lovers. Make a back up and then flash on to cm7 rc4.

I'm not sure what script sprint lovers is in so you may get an install error. NO worries we will just have to change your recovery.

Let's see if I got this right:
First I flash this: EVO_Radio_2.15.00.11.19_WiMAX_27167_R01_PRI_NV_1.9 0.003 - Includes latest Radio, WiMAX, PRI & NV
Then I backup (NAND) ?
Next I wipe everything with Kings "Reformat all" .zip ?
Then I flash Sprint Lovers (PC36IMG.zip)
Then backup ( I assume NAND ?)
Finally I flash CM7

I have MyBackup Pro and have all of my apps and data backed up. Can I just use that to bring everything else back ?

What if I do get the install error? How do I change my recovery?

Thanks for all your help everyone !!

Also we suggest not using rom manager and doing it manually. Furthermore we suggest that you use amon ra recovery instead of clockwork. It's up to you. If you insist on keeping clockwork at least back up, flash, and wipe things manually in recovery itself.

the reason I have clockwork is because it was recommended in another thread. I don't care what I use, as long as it works ;)

I also don't ming doing it manually , again RM was recommended somewhere.

If I uninstall ROM Manager, will clockworkmod be gone as well?

How do I go about replacing clockworkmod with amon ra ?

well if you are goin to flash just your radios you don't need to flash sprint lovers. Sprint lovers was just an easy package with everything up to date on a custom rom. Seemed easier to me to flash sprint lovers only and make a good back up and then flash cm7.
