Amazon App Store Thread - Daily Free Apps

that is odd....

For the most part, Lingrove was a colossal failure. However, it's extremely hard. If you've seen the game show Lingo, it's that times ten. The only reason I know this is because while it wasn't playable on my phone and many others, you can play it on a Nook Color.

I doubt if they can conquer a market with just Nook Color owners, but it can't be worse than what they have now.

Wow, I can't believe Amazon stooped that low. I guess this explains why we are getting a bunch of sub par applications for the free app of the day.

You do realize that Amazon would lose tons of money if they actually paid the developers for the apps they gave away for free? Espcially the ones where 95% of the downloads never would have ever happened in the first place had it not been free.

The app that article talks about is an excellent example of this. The blog of the developer can be found here: Amazon App Store: Rotten To The Core | Shifty Jelly’s blog of mystery

Their app is some sort of podcast app that was getting around 15-20 downloads before and after the free app of the day promotion. Had Amazon given the "original" 20%, they would be down $50k (18 million each year for every app that goes up). If you want to have a free app of the day spot on the iPhone app store you have to pay Apple several thousand dollars for the prime advertising placement, where as Amazon gives you the spot for free. Not every app is going to generate the kind of revenue Angry Birds does.

It is definitely misleading that Amazon said they would give 20% when the store was first launched, but they were only setting themselves up to fail from the beginning. If anyone is to blame it is the moron who wrote that in the first place.

A loss that could be easily absorbed by such a large company in order to popularize a proven income generator. I just figured, like most people when this started, that was the business model.

today's free app.. is frogger.. a classic game.

why does it need so much permission: Location, call info, cell network?

I don't think the original version of Frogger needed that much permission to be played. One quarter and you were in.

Basically, Amazon is pointing out that the free ride is over.

The "Free App of the Day" now truly is just a regular free app that gets money through other means (data mining or Ads).

However, the difference is that it gets more attention and gets to be upgraded to a double-paid app (money up front + data mining) after its 24hrs in the spotlight runs out.

I just thought of something. When amazon offers a good game for free, it gets lots of downloads, lots of good reviews and then when it's no longer free, people still decide to get the game or app based on all the reviews.

I know that I'm late to the thread (by the time I caught onto MySpace it was out of style as carrying a plastic comb in your back pocket), but this is the way the Android Market SHOULD work. The size of the user base is generally the best indicator of a software's quality and value to the population being targeted. The users, truly, are the quality control team. They SHOULD get the application for free. And, to those who were late to the game (too bad) or didn't care enough to take a chance on said software they SHOULD pay for the application if its rating is high enough.

You didn't know that the arcade game was giving out your personal information 30 years ago?

You know, things like:

* you are skipping school

* you are a nerd

* you value a video game over two scoops of ice cream

* you are a future leader of PETA

* there aren't any other log-rolling games that you can play

:D

Today's weather app is really cool. I normally don't burden my phone with unnecessary apps, especially when I can get weather through my browser... but I may end up leaving this app on my phone! I put the updates on manual, will have to see if it effects battery much. Odd that "Weather USA" was the app this morning, but "Airport Mania" seems to be the one now. The Weather app is still free though.

What I've learned from the Free App of the Day is that I'll never pay anything for an App.

Nothing that I've gotten for free is worth even 99 cents. For every paid app, there is a free version available.

Nothing against people who work hard to develop apps, but I just can't imagine paying for anything.

EDIT: After reading the link in post 728, I remember one free app that I might buy.
Amazon gave away a game/simulator called "Apparatus". After I could not update it from Amazon, I found this link on the developers site explaining why he pulled it.

How long have you been using the Amazon AppStore? When it first started, there were some really good, quality apps. There's no denying the quality has gone down within the past month, but you should always show support and pay for apps that are actually good and useful.

I'm done with Amazon. Even the apps that were good near the beginning no longer work for me. I tired several times to de register the devices, reinstall the Amazon app store and all the other suggestions and no dice. No matter what I do I can't get my 'paid for' apps to work. So, I uninstalled all of them, cleared the caches, uninstalled the Amazon app store and went back to the free versions from the market. Problems solved. Amazon couldn't do anything to help me and they didn't seem to care either. I wasted WAY too much time trying to get these 'free' apps to work.

Agreed, most are pretty bad, although I wouldn't go as far as saying "nothing".

I continue to use the CardioTrainer app nearly every day, although they have a "Free" version of it.
(And since I just use the "Free" parts of the app, technically I didn't need the Paid/Pro version that was AFAOTD)

SwiftKeyX was a great app, and I use that as my keyboard still.

Peggle is/was a very addictive game, and I have spent hours playing it.
(For some reason, CyanogenXMod breaks that game for me, which is a bummer!)

Konas Crate is also another game I really enjoy, and was a "Free" app of the day as well.

I have both an iPod Touch and a Android G2X, and honestly, Apple seems to have a lot better apps that are "Free for the day", or really reduced in price.

I realize that "Free" doesn't make the developer money, but maybe they should do something like "Free for the first 1000 downloads" or something.
This limits the downside to the developer in offering the app up as free for the full day, while still providing them the viewership they need to actually get seen in the marketplace.

Printer share is today's free app. Normally $13!

This app almost makes me want to install Amazon app market again just to install but it will stop working just like all the rest have so it's not worth the effort. I have a rooted phone and while this may have something to do with it all of my apps from The Market (both paid & free) work just fine so I'm not buying Amazon's cop out. They need to address this issue as I wasn't the only one having it.

Love this app. Was a little hesitant about loading the ancillary part on my computer. But all seems to work great. Now I am printing right from my phone through WiFi.

Also for those bad mouthing Amazon, we have gotten some other nice apps like soundhound, weatherbug elite, all the angry birds series, and several other goodies. Personally, I am loving getting some of my favorite apps for free.

Anyone know if the "Save for later..." option in the app store allows you to "buy" now (for free) then download later or does it do something else? I'd like to try some of these larger mb size games and apps they are offering but my free install space is at a premium right now until I get a new sd card.

THANKS!

I tested that procedure and it wont' work. You have to download and install the app on the day it is free.

You don't have to install it. What you can do is go under the Appstore settings and set it to block downloads over 1Mb on 3G; turn off your wifi and "purchase" the free app. It will tell you that it was purchased but user settings prevented it from downloading until you get on a wifi connection. I've been doing it for the past month or so and all of the free apps are being saved on my account.

Thanks. I didn't think of trying that. I just know if you click on the save it for later button, you won't be able to download the app at a later date without paying for it.
