AMOLED vs. LCD Screens

I wish they would have gone to SAMOLED instead of LCD on the Inc.
The article is quite fair and accurate in it's reporting.

That said, I have the SLCD and a good friend has the AMOLED, our phones are both exactly the same other than that. It's truly a tossup, which in my opinion is best decided based on what you use the phone for. They are both quite good, and it takes a true side by side comparison to notice the subtle differences.

I purposely ordered the SLCD because I do a lot of reading.. web pages, emails, books (when I travel with a heavy laptop bag nothing beats a digital book on my smartphone).

My friend likes movies and therefore the AMOLED was his first choice. Yet that said, now that he's seen the display on my Captivate he's selling his and off to buy a Captivate today.

Cheers... :)

Received my refurb today. It came with the Sony LCD in it. It was not as disappointing as I expected, but being that I'm doing a phd developing new types of OLEDs, I could tell the difference and I was not happy with the Sony panel. BUT, the replacement phone had the "old" 1.28_002 PRI on it, it was just as lousy signal as my other one, so I'm back to my original >:-/

take it for what you want, but Verizon customer service rep told me they have received far less calls about issues with touch screen since changing to LCD.

So I talked the girl sitting next to me at school into going android and Friday she came in with the incredible. Now I'm pretty sure its lcd but I couldn't figure out how to check on her phone. Isn't there a way?

I just posted in my ")(*$)(#$ I lost my phone!" thread about how I now know the difference between AMOLED and SLCD because apparently the husband rec'd an AMOLED last month, and now I have an SLCD replacement. Side by side, the difference actually is really noticeable.

I know that VZW is supposed to replace w/ the screen I had, but b/c I rec'd an emergency replacement (I was travelling), they had to give me what was in store and all that they have in store right now is SLCD.

Anyone think it's worth it for me to try and convince the online reps to exchange this for an AMOLED screen? Anyone think it will work?

What do you think? It's really just personal preference, and lucky for you, you can look at them side by side and decide for yourself which one you like best.

The SLCD screens are very sharp, and are good for reading text (email/texting/internet etc.). The AMOLED screens have vivid colors and deep blacks so they are best if you watch a lot of movies and things like that, however text can look a little fuzzy, some people don't find it very noticeable but others find it particularly annoying. Both are equally difficult to use in direct sunlight, and battery life will depend on what you use the phone for. If you put a solid black screen on both SLCD and AMOLED, the AMOLED consumes much less power, but on a white screen, the AMOLED uses more power than the SLCD, so it depends on what you use it for. If you surf the web a lot (white backgrounds) you will get better battery life with the SLCD, if you watch a lot of movies or things with lots of black you will get better battery life with the AMOLED.

I personally prefer the SLCD and I requested my replacement to be SLCD instead of my current AMOLED, but they said I'll have to wait since currently neither Verizon nor HTC have any replacements with the SLCD, you're lucky they gave you a new phone off the shelf!

Lot of ambiguous info out there, anyone know how I can tell which screen I have?
I don't have the box and I don't know when it was purchased.

Any info is appreciated.

The model number is on the box your phone came in right by the barcode.

ADR6300VW = AMOLED from launch day, 2GB OUTSIDE the box

ADR6300VW2 = AMOLED with 2GB IN the box

ADR6300VW3 = SLCD

(I found this at http://androidforums.com/htc-incredible/113197-amoled-vs-super-lcd-screens-5.html )

This is right but since he doesn't have the box you can check by pulling the back cover off, pull the battery out, then look at the phone where the battery was and below the Fcc logo you can see what your model number is.

Or menu->settings->about phone->hardware information->hardware version

My hardware version says 0002. That doesn't reflect either 02 or 03
screen.. or am I missing something.

could that POSSIBLY be that 0002 is the same as 02? (ok, there are a number of loud people making idiotic posts tonight, and I'm getting a little punchy).

I had a thread going on this but not sure what happened to it:confused:

This was the last I had on it but thread is gone now for some reason:
Dear EinZtein,

Lacyanne64 has just replied to a thread you have subscribed to entitled - Do I have amoled screen? - in the HTC Incredible forum of Android Forums.

This thread is located at:

Here is the message that has just been posted:

When off does your screen have a blue tint to it? if it does its an amoled.

I don't have the box, don't know when it was purchased. I compared to my friends Amoled screen, we couldn't really tell a difference they both kinda looked black or dark, maybe super dark blue tint but we couldn't tell in the end if they looked the same or not.

There's got to be a way to tell by numbers. Both of ours are ADR6300 Model. Couple things were different between his and mine. His hardware build is 0002, mine 0003. He bought his the first week they were out.

There was another difference too in Software Info, I think the build or maybe the kernal number was a little bit different at the end of the string.

I want to root this thing but I can't figure out if it has an Amoled screen or not.

Any help is appreciated.

I will add that when I was driving home in pitch black I turned my phone on and after the white screen when it went "black" it looked almost purple, then it went into the boot animation.

Also, if you hold the screen at a certain angle when turned off I can see the hardware, circuitry point grid with about a quarter inch spacing.

That's fact then?

Great, now I know. Thanks.

One more thing, while your on, I check out the other threads but I have seen a lot of ambiguous info out there. Which screen puts more drain on the battery?

I don't think it worked, my Droid and Droid X battery was better in both. And 5 of the guys in the cubes around me with Amoled screens seem to have about the same battery life as me. Side by side we all had a hard time telling the difference but we didn't really compare the same pictures or get the deep comparing, at first and second glance on web pages and such, they looked pretty much the same.

Still loving the DI though, will try to root later today.

Thanks for the info.
