Android 2.0.1 Findings!!!

Got my update last night at midnight. Here are a couple things I noticed:

- Previously, whenever I would select the gmail notification from the bar, it would take me to the newest e-mail. This wasn't a problem if I only had one unread e-mail. Now when I select the notification and have more than one unread e-mail it takes me to the list to see them all at a glance...I like that.

- The time between camera shots is noticeably shorter. That clicking sound is still there when you first start the camera. I never did mind that. I do like the shorter time for taking shots.

- The calendar widget looks better. It includes additional elements on upcoming appointments, i.e. place.

- When you wake up the phone, the unlock screen gradually appears. It looks more polished.

- The screen animations are a lot smoother. Even if you do a slower slide from screen to screen, it's not choppy.

- Battery life is improved. Granted, I didn't think it was a problem before but now it seems better. For example, I've been playing with the phone a lot this morning because of the update. I took it off the charger at 7:15 AM this morning. 4 hours later, the battery is still at 100%. Much improved.

- New unlock screen. You all know about this. One cool thing is that when you slide to unlock, there are two vibrates if you have haptic feedback enabled.

That's it for now. As I discover additional things, I'll post and share.

I'm really excited for these two specifically. The other are very meh. But these fixes sound fantastic :)

There's one other thing I noticed. I think this is new...

I've got my screen to go to sleep after one minute. With the update, a few seconds before the screen goes dark, it dims slightly.

I've noticed these subtle changes throughout. With each change of screen or command, there's a nice animation. Everything seems to flow smoother. I guess you can say the "feng shui" is better now on the Droid.

Lucky few thousand huh? well lemme tell ya i'm one of the "lucky" and i want my old look back. If i wanted an iphone unlock screen on my DRIOD i woulda downloaded the app., also if i wanted a smaller google search bar... well i wouldn't, and don't... but i do now and i'm highly upset about it! this new software look sucks if anyone has any idea how to get the old look back lemme kno. As far as functionality? the phone moves a little faster and smoother. Thank goodness for that or I would be blowing-up verizons phone lines!!

Actually I was just thinking about starting my own rant because I have NOT gotten the update. I should get a discount because I wasn't one of the chosen few. IT'S NOT FAIR!!!!!! (J/K! :D

hahahaha i think we all feel like the barbara...I am gettin a replacement droid in the mail today...maybe it was one of the lucky ones??? lol it is like finding the golden ticket...cept not really cuz we will all get it in time

Taken from larger update thread:

Im the one that posted about the alarm this morning. I think you are all going to find things to run smoother. I can also attest to the battery being better so far. My battery is still at 100% from unplugging over four hours ago. I would normally be down to 80% or lower. Now when you open an application it smoothly fills the screen from the middle of the screen outward, a big improvement in my opinion. I said it earlier it certainly feels a little bit more iphonish than before, but we all know there are some good things about that phone. I like the new look of the lock screen better than before, you will notice that the lock screen will only stay on about five seconds before turning off if the screen is not unlocked. Stay tuned, I think you are going to like what we are getting.

In view of the noted improvement in battery life people are seeing, it is REALLY important that those of you who at least have seen what the signal performance is like before the update compare it with after the update. Most of what I've been seeing as a cause of poor battery life on this phone has been excessive power usage for standby, idle and voice calls, so probably the phone trying to hold signal. I'd expect "Display" to be the leading power drain on a smartphone and especially this smartphone, not "Voice Calls" -- but "Voice Calls" have been the leading drain for me even though I haven't been talking that heavily on the phone lately.

So, what we want to know is, how is this battery improvement achieved. Does this update deal with the signal issue? Does it streamline the OS while not really addressing signal? Or both?

Photo... My battery drain has always been related in high significance to the screen usage. I cannot comment on signal strength, as mine has been pretty good overall. Prior to the update I could have a one hour conversation on the Droid without a decrease in battery strength. This is probably not the answer you were looking for, but the best one that I have.

got the update early this morning too. I dont care about the screen lock, scrolling, camera, etc.. I am curious to know if this update fixes the force close issues and sms messages being deleted without my doing.

If not, the phone is going back tomorrow as my 30 day trial ends on the 10th.

Im the one that posted about the alarm this morning...

I was just trying to consolidate pertinent info...hope you don't mind.

I also want to 2nd and 3rd feedback requests on possible signal performance changes however I don't think the update has reached enough people to cover those who actually had problems prior...or even bothered to note readings.

FWIW, I was in an area where I got 0-1 bars, mostly 0 but I think I could have managed a call, and my battery went from 100% to 20% in under 4 hours, with no background nor foreground processes running. This from a battery that was good for 24hrs on "my normal use".

i was just checking my battery usage and just noticed that the display uses less power after the update - i think. i could have sworn before it used to take up about ~80%, but right now the display is only taking up 54%.

correct me if i'm wrong about the 80% usage to pre-updated phones.

Its not a "fixed" allocation. Usage can vary just depending on how the phone, and its resources, are being used. They could however have reduced the the screen's power draw, making it more "efficient".

Right now my voice calls are 84% and Display is 4%, but I think that's due to the fact that I just got off a call - :P

My display is only 40% on 2.0, like the guy a couple posts above me said, it depends on what you're doing at the time.

Everyone who has not gotten the update: remember, the ones that did get it are basically the guiney pigs for the update. They are the test group. If it had major bugs, they would be the ones that suffer it. I am glad, however, that things have gone smoothly for the ones reporting to us here.

I am also curious about the signal issue. My signal (as reported by the 'bars') seems to vary greatly while I'm at home.

Just got another force close after trying to open the Snake app. Not sure if that means those force close issues are over or not.

All I really want to know is if I can now get the bluetooth to send my podcasts to the bluetooth in my car. Currently, my phone says that it's playing through bluetooth, but I'm not getting sound out of my car speakers, this fix is all I'm missing.
