Thanks very much Afonja; I guess I'll follow your tip; but in any case I think it's ridicolous that one has to pay for a separate app in order to be able to back up his/her phone.
I never heard of another phone or OS where this is necessary.

does anyone know if the 2.1 version will allow us to use UMA on the hero? or is this a hardware feature and not software?

I couldn't resist, so I went ahead and flashed it. It's pretty cool, although some of the sluggishness returned. The Powerbar (I think that's what it's called) widget is nice to have.

So far I found one bug..the keyboard calibration app force closes.

I'm going to see if I can link my apps on the SD card so I don't have to reinstall.

it was on a G1 man

Yes it was , and as a native of the old dusty continent on the wrong side of the pond, I have never got a chance to manipulate or even to see a tridimensional G1, however, after a quick look at its specs, it does'nt seem to me to be so vastly inferior to my beloved Hero.
It looks like I'll be obliged to exchange my beautyful Hero with a Milestone a SE X10, or (hopefully) with an HTC Passion.

G1 is considerably slower than the hero.

The G1 is a huge disadvantage in that it has a good 100MB less RAM. Even the 1.5 based SenseUI ROMs lag horribly on the G1.

we'll have to wait until the official upgrade is released from HTC to truely see how it has improved and if they have improved speed and battery issues.

Should be out any day now..

It seems like everyone has drifted off the subject here...

I'm a newbie when it comes to the updating of the Hero. The only thing I know is to go into Settings>About the Phone>Firmware update.
I just went thru those steps and it said that No firmware update was available...

How do we go about updating to the 2.1/actually installing the update?

I went to this link
[ROM] Hero 2.1 v1.2temp- It's here by Behnaam w/ Help from Drizzy & friends [1/12/09] - xda-developers

and I saw that you can install the 2.1, but I'm not sure how to get the update onto the Hero...

thats because it hasn't been officially released yet. Once HTC do an official release then you should be able to get it from their site, or via the way you just described.

Yeah, and who knows how early that build is. Apparently several things were broken in it.
I'm not getting too excited about an impending release just yet. It may be a while until they get to a release candidate, never mind actually releasing it to us. Of course, then I have to wait for T-Mobile to alter it before I can have it:mad:.

Let's hope T-Mobile arn't gonna take as long as they did last time! We may have to wait until the summer if they do...

Can someone set me straight please, a little confused. I purchased a Hero a few months back and it's firmware was v1.76.405.6. Last week I d'loaded a new ROM from the htc site (v2.73.405.5) and upgraded my phone with that. Huge improvement in speed. I was about to give up on the Hero until I made this upgrade, the hang factor was so bad.
Quetion - Are firmware and ROM the same thing?

No, the 2.1 we're talking about refers to the Android OS which is the firmware. A ROM is the entire image that contains the firmware. The official HTC ROM containing the 2.1 Android firmware will probably be some 3.x version number.

Thanks quantumrand. Do you know if I am running the latest firmware (v.2.73.405.5) for the Hero then? And how can I tell what version of the Android OS my hero is running?
