Android 2.1 HERO News

Its unlikely going to be before the changes to the market, so December 11th onwards I'd expect and they have been working on its for some time so it could drop within days, though the quote working as fast as they can could mean they have a deadline date and they want to complete it for then.

I've just had a email from HTC.
Saying hand on heart they really have no idea when the Eclair is coming to the hero.

That's it.

That'll be the customer service team then, no? Always the last to know anything in any company! [The usual scenario goes something like this "Team, I've just received an email about a new product that we're supporting. It was released last month and we should get the all the info on it in a week or two. Until then, if anyone calls, tell the RTFM"]

Someone knows, or at least has a deadline - they just aren't telling anyone...

RTFM?

Anyway they will have their internal deadline, which regardless of the fact that they are not telling us, i'm sure they are working hard to stick to.

Read The F'in Manual!

I agree, they do, they're not (and won't) and I'm sure they are...

I suppose when they do release it, we'll also have to wait until our carriers release it to us? Or can we directly download the new ROM (without the whole rooting, business)

That depends on who you bought your handset through. It is differant between carriers and Countries

So does that mean that as mine is a generic factory unlocked unbranded handset, I should be getting the update as soon as HTC release it?

Yes, you will be able to download it as soon as HTC release it

To be honest, Orange didn't take too long last time. I believe T-Mobile were a little slower?

In the UK, T-Mobile took forever with the first update, I am praying they don't take as long with this one

How cool.. in the spirit of one upmanship and anal childishness, ill be keeping a close eye on here and the HTC site..

Wonder who will be the first to post the .."I just installed 2.1 on my hero" thread ?

How many on here are using unbranded phones?

In my opinion, Android is very poorly supported here in the UK.

It's a shame, but that's what I honestly believe.

If you read articles like Stuff Magazine about Android in Europe, most mobile phone users still haven't even heard of it...

Its definitely not marketed that well, or at all. Word of mouth is the biggest pusher so far, and that really shouldn't be the case.

Looking forward to Eclair update too :) tbh having come from a Nokia N97 - where the new updated to fix bugs took so long I'm quite satisfied to wait a little longer for a hopefully bug free update :)

Carrier wise I'm on Vodafone - and it took them over a month to "brand" the latest Nokia software update - so if its not out to January it will be some welcome news when the bills arrive to cheer us all up :)

Regards

Alex

I am, primarily because of the update issue. With a phone of this type it's just unacceptable that the networks make you wait before getting access to the latest software.
I am too, because I don't think carriers over here in Slovakia will pick Android up anytime soon (read: next 2-3 years). So far, I'm happy as two clams. :)

It's not no, but that being said I can walk 2 minutes down the road and see an advert for the HTC Hero on the side of a bus stop, and there have been adverts for it on tv too. Seems to be the only android handset with that kind of marketing here though. Why haven't Motorola done an uber heavy campaign for the Milestone like they did with the Droid in the US? Seems to have worked well there.

Anyways I was gonna ask, with 2.1 there's gonna be a desktop client right? Will we be able to use that with our Hero's running 1.5? I really hope so..

I think the amount of celebs who use the iPhone has also helped it's cause.

I think there could even become a point where (like sellotape and hoover) iPhone is a collective name for mobile phones............maybe...who knows?

BAD NEWS! If this official hero sprint tweet is anything to go by, we could be in for a long wait:

From Sprint's official Twitter feed: "Happy to announce Android 2.0 is coming to Sprint's Hero & Moment. Date TBD, but roughly 1H 2010."

That's first half 2010, could be June for all we know.

HTC have twittered that the Sprint hero will get 2.0 in the first half of 2010. I am glad I am not holding my breath for a gsm update.

If I can make a sage like comment on this thread, as my old gran used to say, !" A watched kettle never boils"

Dont get me wrong I'm all about a new ROM but when and if we get it thats all good, failing that in 12 months when my contract allows i will get a different handset with the most current ROM on.

Posted by @HTC a couple of hours ago:

"Did you know your Sprint Hero will be getting Eclair early next year? Well... now you do! Happy Friday ladies and gents. :)"
