Android 2.1 / Moto Droid

11:29 a.m.: eWeek wants to know how the Nexus One will affect sales of the Droid. Jha says that Motorola will upgrade the Droid to the new software features in due time, and that HTC and Motorola are, of course, competitors, and will continue compete.

Due time.....that doesn't sound good.

wow was that link never posted on AF? I'm suprised I read all of this yesterday. Should've posted it before but I didn't want to look like a moron if the link was already posted

I'm actually betting it won't be that long. It looks like the Backflip (which is god awful looking) will ship with 2.1 in Q1. If they have time to stick all their lame Blur stuff into that, I suspect they'll have time to do the almost zero modifications to the Google Experience ROM for the Droid. It is their flagship phone after all.

Yeah, looks like January will be a 2.1 update, Flash 10.1 and a maintenance update. Will be a great month for DROID owners! As far as we know, Adobe has been working with Motorola for a while optimizing it to its hardware (also using the N900, which has similar hardware). Will we get it before N1?

If Motorola works quickly then we can see it in a week or so after it comes to the source tree, maybe sooner. However, if you ever want root then I strongly suggest you do not accept the update because it WILL close up the current exploit to gain root access. Also 2.1 or it's kernel isn't going to upclock the processor, it is at 550mhz for a reason.

So is it underclocked? I can swear I saw somewhere it was, but if it is WHY?? What would that reason be, seams odd to me... unless there are inherent flaws to the kernel normally faster the clock-speed faster the chip, so why under-clock it on purpose? Again, if it is, I could just be imagining things.

Hi All,

So I'm reading mixed things here. I know I've seen posts on here saying the droid is getting 2.1, but looking on a google search, it seems the motorola ceo said he "thinks" it will happen.

Anyone know for sure if the droid is getting the update? Or anyone maybe know when there might be more official word.

I know that is probably a tall order to ask for, but I'd figure I would try.
Like you i would like to know when 2.1 will be available for the Droid. My guess would be soon. Now that the Nexus One is out sporting the upgrade.

i am rooted. are you saying it will ask me if i want to accept? or will the update just fail becuz i am rooted? i'd hate to lose my cachemate lol i luv that thing.

I doubt we'll see it too soon. But we'll see. Personally I'm in no hurry, just means half of the apps we use regularly will probably NOT work for several days (or longer)... and with no other phone apparently getting 2.1 anytime soon it's going to make it hell on the app developers... Google really needs to tighten things up on the app market and the developers or the market is going to become an embarrassment.

I watched the whole event and if I remember correctly they said all apps will work on 2.1 and you shouldn't have any issues.

Doesn't look like we'll be getting 2.1 until later, guys. Next update looks like its just going to be a "maintenance" update.....maybe just 2.02 :(

But the news doesn't stop there for Droid owners. Not only will they receive Android 2.1 but Motorola has been working on Flash 10.1 integration and has optimized it for the Droid chipset, which means yes, your Droid will soon have official Flash support. On top of that, the Droid should get a second maintenance update in the near future. Score big for Droid.

Here's the whole article:
Motorola Droid & Cliq Getting Android 2.1, Droid to Get Flash 10 | Android Central

Oh well....we'll just have to wait and see.

It's in Motorola's interest to get 2.1 out to us since the introduction of the N1, in my opinion. Guess we'll wait til January 22nd and see what happens.

I just want 2.1 with the Exchange support that I enjoy now. Apparently N1 owners do not have native Exchange support. I don't want to lose that in 2.1. Hopefully, 2.1 will drop and the maintenance will restore anything we lose.

The Droid was advertised with this support and people are using it. It would be a very bad business move to release an OS update that took this feature away.

I spoke to Verizon Wireless tech support and the lady told me that the Droid will receive the update OTA on January 22 for the upgrade to 2.1. She was even able to list some of the issues that would be addressed but I don't remember what they were. Hope this helps

I would take this with a grain of salt. Verizon support members are known to be stupid, clueless mammoths who will say anything to get you off the phone.

That being said, I can't say I care TOO much. I'm rooted and within a few hours of the 2.1 official ROM being released "in a few days" to devs, they'll get a perfectly running edition for rooters.

Can't wait!!

Let's hope so.

The article reads that way (2.1, 10.1, 2.1.1) but it's hardly definitive, unfortunately, in terms of the order of those updates, or their timing.

Have to wait and see...in any case I'm rooted and will likely opt for an optimized ROM from the devs once they have the 2.1 code/SDK, which as noted above could easily appear before Google/Moto/Verizon get around to releasing an official 2.1 OTA update.

Hopefully Google will get off their butts and release 2.1...they are way behind, considering it's out on the Nexus already.

I know there was talk about "in a few days" last week about android 2.1 releasing on the droid.

Has anyone heard anything?
