Android 2.1 Update

So this 2.1 update....I still think we have some time to go until it is real. If I could see just ONE official statement about it coming in january I would believe.

+1... 22nd is not looking good... :(

I don't think an official announcement will come out until they begin pushing out 2.1 to everyone. Expect the first official announcement to be similar to the announcement of 2.0.1 where Verizon said "Here's what you're getting in the update that we are pushing to you".

Below is the link to the info page about 2.0.1. This page didn't appear until people started getting the update. So, expect this page to change when 2.1 is being pushed out to Droid owners.

System Update: DROID by Motorola

I know it's only been up for 10 minutes but has anyone tried this? Also, ajm144k, what is included in this update?

I think, like gentlefury said, this is more like the "Jan 18" OTA -- just the update to make sure that the 2.1 goes smoothly later this week (if the update goes out the 22nd like expected).

Here is the thread it was posted in with the direct download URL in it.

AllDroid - View topic - 61MB Maintance updated being pushed out

thats not the exact zip i have here. gotta read what i did to it.

no, its not 2.1. i dont think anyone is sure when thats coming.

this here the OTA update people started getting a day or two ago. im just getting it out there for whoever wants it. and with this one i have here, for whoever wants the unnecessary apps removed and all the other apps optimized.

Hi and thanks
sorry for the basic question but
1 do I need to root to use this
2 I do not have a rooted phone and get verification failed when I try to update?

I think I'm just going to hold off. I don't see that this "update" buys me anything. When the 2.1 update hits, I may just start from scratch, apply this, and then the 2.1 patch. Sounds like a plan. Probably not a good one ... but a plan none-the-less. ;)

yeah i dont know if there is a changelog anywhere for this update. but i guess one thing is it lets you update your facebook app, which for a lot of people wasn't updating at all for about a month now. so thatll be fixed, which for some will be a relief.

but other than that, i dont think theres any concrete evidence of anything. (although the OTA update itself was about 61 mb, which seems like it is basically a fresh install of a somehow newer 2.0.1)

oh- well and all of your apps will all be optimized... an advantage all the custom roms use, but this will still be all stock.

Slightly different question: I have pondered rooting, but have not felt the need currently. If, in the future, I want to be able to root, do I have to do it before the 2.1 update happens?

It's not a "limited time rooting offer" - wait until you have 2.1 and THEN root, like I am going to do.

On a side note, I can't believe how many people still come to this thread having no idea what a root is.
Questions about OTA, and the likes - I think everyone should be required to watch a Rooting 101 youtube video before they can enter the DROID subforum.
It's just crazy!

It might not be that easy Nick. Word on the street is that the official 2.1 update release is going to seal off the ability to root. So, you might not be able to root the moment after your update.

Of course, I've been around long enough to know that when "they" try to keep us out . . . we just need to find another way IN. ;)

I stand corrected - and...TOUCHE'

good point bro...yer most likely 100 percent correct on that. bummer...I just want 5 homescreens that are fluid and not choppy/laggy...(i have several widgets)

I'm looking forward to the 5 home screens too!

And I'm not keen on any of the home replacement apps

I rooted my phone a looong time ago, which is stupid easy and very safe, assuming you follow instructions, and there is a way to go back to non-rooted stock version if you are worried. The 5 extra homescreen hack for the 2.0.1 Launcher is great, as is the ported over 2.1 Launcher (I love this one to death).

The desktop apps aren't even worth the money.

For all of you who've downloaded the 2.1 yourselves, have you found any incompatibilities that people should be keeping an eye out for when everything becomes official? How long do you think any apps for 2.1 will surface?
No incompatibilities. The only apps that I've tried that don't work on 2.1 on my rooted Droid are ones that didn't work in 2.0.x anyway. Furthermore, most of the ones compatible for the Droid are compatible for the Nexus One (reasoning below).

Both 2.0.x and 2.1 are considered "Eclair" so outside of a few changes in the apps (keyboard, gallery, launcher, etc) I don't think they work very differently; I'd go as far as to say that 2.0.x was a mere beta for the "true" Eclair release that is 2.1. Furthermore, the Droid and the N1 have very similar screen resolutions, so that obstacle is heavily mitigated for developers trying to maintain cross-device compatibility.
