Help Android 2.3 (gingerbread) possible for the Optimus S?

Ok folks, I know we were lucky to get our Optimuses (Optimi?) with 2.2 preinstalled, but what do you think the chances are of getting the upgrade to Gingerbread? I'm probably being greedy, right? Is a 600 mhz processor an automatic deal-breaker?
 
I don't know about thw specs needed for GB to run.But my wife has 2.2.1 on her optimus s and my Evo still is at just 2.2.
 
Some early reports I have seen suggest that there is a good chance the phone will get Gingerbread. In addition, I believe that there are no new hardware requirements over 2.2.

Consider that the Optimus is hot right now. I think AT&T is the only major carrier in the US that does not have some variant of it right now. And I think it would be hard for LG and Sprint to let it fall behind the curve update wise only a month or so after it was released.

LG is still trying to break into the smartphone market in a big way and letting this phone fall behind will be something customers remember when they upgrade to their next phone.

Likewise, the Optimus is the best 3G android phone that Sprint has by a long shot. It would not be good for them to let this phone get outdated at least until they had a replacement for it within a few months of being released.

Considering that the Evo just received Froyo a short while ago, and sprint is still releasing phones with 2.1, I think they wouldn't consider the Optimus outdated for quite a while yet.
Also, I can understand LG pushing to keep their phone fresh and relevant, but they would still have to convince the powers-that-be at Sprint to agree. I get the impression from Sprints marketing that they real the optimus pretty low on their list of offerings. They wouldn't want a phone they consider to be entry-level stealing the thunder from their high-end flagships.
One thing that it does have working in its favor is that it is currently running stock android without any Sense/Touch Wiz interface, so upgrading it should be fairly simple for LG
 
I got LG Vortex (Verizon version of Optimus phone) last week and I'm very impressed by its smooth, snappy performance. We need to note that plenty of mid-range phones are still stuck with 2.1 and 2.2 is still very decent OS for android phones. I'm personally fine even if my vortex doesn't get 2.3 update ever. It doesn't look like revolutionary step forward from 2.2 other than some UI, keyboard improvements, and NFC support.

As for the technical feasibility of 2.3 update, I don't know if MSM7627 processor in Optimus phone is capable of it or not. It's matter of processor architecture/generation not just the clock speed as some pointed out.
 
Even if the optimus doesn't get gingerbread, owners shouldbe happy with froyo. It makes the optimus run faster then other android phones with larger cpu's.the galaxy s phones are still on 2.1. The Evo has had froyo since july. Sprint has already pushed 2'2'1 to the optimus so they are very good at updates.
 
I am almost certain that Sprint LG Optimus S users will at least have the ability to eventually get Android 2.3 through rooting and switching ROMs. There is already an AOSP Android 2.3 ROM out for the Sprint HTC Hero, albeit, the radios do not work yet.

I, for one, doubt that you will get the Android 2.3 update through official Sprint and LG channels though. Rooting seems to be the only way.
 
They won't let phones just stop at their current android OS level. There will be other updates in the future, and they will be taylored to our phones. At least a couple more before the phone becomes old news like all phones eventually do. From what I have heard 2.3 is not a huge difference like 2.2 was to 2.1.

My GF just got one yesterday & its a sweet little phone I'm happy to see she picked a good phone. :cool:

But hears the crazy part i have an Epic (Galaxy S) and sprint is still dragging ass on the FroYo 2.2.1 update for there BIG Flagship phone but the little LG, the phone that Best Buy/Sprint is giving away for free has Froyo:eek::rolleyes::eek:

You all should be real happy that you have 2.2.

I Don't understand Samsung & LG. Samsung is pretty good about fixing TV firmware and updating TVs But i have an LG TV right now & it took LG forever to fix little bugs in the firmware:confused:

I had a Samsung Transform. It SUCKED!! Slow as hell, laggy, heavy as a brick, android 2.1 was bad. Felt too black and white. No flare if you will. 2.2 is like night and day compared to 2.1. I quickly sold my transform and got the optimus. Haven't looked back!

It may ultimately depend on whether the individual carriers will offer the upgrade. For good reasons they tend to be very conservative on this type of stuff.
 
Just root the phone, install clockwork mod (xionia) is what I use and I've been running 2.3.3 for some time now works great
 
I had to root to get 2.3. Doing research I learned LG is natoriously late with updates. And they are as HTC and Motorola have already updated they're models to 2.3. I think its coming but since its such a good phone I don't picture them rushing. When it comes I'm passing. I like my cyanogenmod 7.
 
As a Optimus S user, I'm still on Android 2.2.1 revision ZVC. I refused the ZVD update because ZVD killed the free WiFi Hotspot capability, which I need. Even if Sprint releases 2.3 for the Optimus, I wouldn't accept the update. To me, there's nothing that 2.3 offers over 2.2 that's more important than my free WiFi Hotspot capability!

When Sprint releases 2.3, if it looks like there's some worthwhile advantage over 2.2, then I might finally root my phone with a Spint-2.3-derived custom ROM.
