Well Samsungfirmwares have a 2.1 fw already apparently  Anyone else get twitter from them and getting annoyed at how much is going on around the spica versus what we're seeing? F********K.

I'll be going to MWC some day next week, don't know when, but you can be sure if there's someone in the Samsung stand responsible for Android phones (I think a great % will be devoted to its own Bada) I will ask him (nicely) where the f*ck is the update for the Galaxy :D

You can also give him a hint, that there are 'others' out there, and, boy, they won't be as 'nice' as you are if he meets them )

In fact, you are unlikely to get anything sensible from him. I suppose decision-makers don't pose at the stands, though I may be wrong.

Well musty has already proved it's not slow. So Samsung's version shouldn't be either, unless their coders have their hand in the wrong place or unless Samsung wants to plug their Cube thing into poor Galaxy )

Best thing would be if they released all code for Galaxy firmware and drivers open source.

That would give us the best possible OS with Musty and Drakaz intervention...

:)

Well I don't expect a decision-maker but rather a product manager for Android, or any kind of engineer involved in the Android line, someone who knows something about this (and is willing to share any news, that's the difficult part)

I agree with porga, is there any way we could convince samsung to opensource their drivers?
Google should make that mandatory :(

I did a quick visit to the Samsung stand this afternoon, man it's 90% Bada (I can understand but still...) and then at the end, besides their low-spec series they have the Spica. I asked the guy who was next to it if they were going to upgrade the Galaxy to... something! and I showed it to him. Well, he confused it with the Spica at first, and then recognized and told me they were going to upgrade it to 2.1 very soon, end of march probably. I questioned him if he was sure, that it was the Galaxy, the "old one" with a 528Mhz CPU and blabla. He told me again that both the Spica and the Galaxy were going to be upgraded.

To sum up: I don't trust what he said after he confused the phone . I'll be back at MWC on wednesday, I'll try to ask somebody else.

Thanks for the input danimar.

As to Bada (and all other similar initiatives ... some in the media today) I aint surprised ... ever since Nexus I think google shot android in the foot bigtime as the multi-manufacturer 'neutral'/common platform.

Also as we have seen some aspects of android arent what they should be ... short-timescale release schedules, the lack of driver-solutions [even MS is faaaar better :-O], and from a manufacturer perspective its costing a lot to keep their phones up to date as a result etc.

But for sure if they are planning 2.x for galaxy why they are enduring the bad publicity of unhappy users whingeing all over the net I dont know...

nice 1 Fernando :) btw Bada looks a lot like a little enhanced Symbian to me which is disappointing. i've been following tons of topics about possible Galaxy update and feeds from many Android related sites for weeks, i hate the way samsung's playing all of us, but i'm not giving up hope though. if we make enough of a fuss on the internet about this, they will yield to us, you'll see! :)

i concluded since they didnt upgrade to donut that they are waiting for eclair to be ready. But when i saw low spec motorola or acer with cupcake on this show i dont know... maybe they think 1.5 is enough? I think Google did stupid move with nexus. You shouldnt eat your business partners. Maybe they want to buy HTC?

i thought the nexus was htc hardware

pretty much the biggest phone manufacturer that took on android has its hands in googles pockets
other companies cannot keep up with htc's turnout for android so they probably going back to what they know which is winmo or unique os's

It is. Or we you being sarcastic?

It's just so obvious, that Google branded phones will have updates faster than any other phones + they will probably get more updates during their lifespan. Which is why buying a 'Google phone' gives so much advantages, esp. if it's a more or less an adequate deal in terms of money as well.

Probably been said a million times before but here goes... Whilst I agree that having a Google phone will get you faster O/S updates, by releasing the Nexus they have done two things :-

1. Sent out a message to other phone manufacturers like Samsung to pull their finger out and release the latest firmware/drivers so that we can have android 2.1, otherwise they will lag behind...

2. The whole point of buying an Android phone is its upgradeability WITHOUT having to buy a new smartphone. At least that was my reasoning in buying an i7500. If you can't, or the manufacturers don't get their act together then sadly Android gets dragged through the dirt with them...

I have yet to decide whether this will work in Google's favour or whether it is a shot in the foot for Android?

If you have just bought a phone with Android on it and now want to upgrade your hardware to get a later release of Android then you're stupid, and also you're playing into the hands of the phone manafacturers who just want you to buy their latest phone....(e.g. Galaxy2!!!)
