Android 4.0 Ice-Cream Sandwich: WHEN are we getting it?

I've heard that the Galaxy SII is getting it and I'm fairly sure the Nexus S will considering that's it's one of Google's own and is pure Android. However, when we get it is another question. Since the Prime will have it exclusively, it might take a few weeks or more until we get it.

If i remember corectly ,we will get it in about 2 months ,just like with Gingerbread :) ...and i think the Nexus One will get it too.

Yes we will be getting it, we should be the first ones after the Galaxy Nexus has it. They said about a month after the Galaxy Nexus is released. So expect early December.

Okay, sounds great.

Will we be getting the camera zoom, panoramic shots, face unlock, multitasking management, etc.? Or is this stuff Galaxy Nexus-exclusive? I really wanted it.

I know that the other stuff is probably standard in Android 4.0.

Since Nexus S is a Google phone, I'd expect that we'd get all these bits.

Well I doubt the Nexus S will be upgraded to 1080p video recording with simultaneous photo taking, nor do I think it will get zero shutter lag. A lot of the ICS features demoed are pretty hardware dependent.

Things like Face Unlock, data management, new notifications, and etc should be included though.

Well all the features that require higher specs we will not be getting, 1080 video for example.

However, simultaneous video and photo taking is possible maybe. I expect that we will have most, if not all, the new software bits. I'm hoping they don't dispose of the physical buttons though. It would make the screen far to small for me and I prefer having something physical to press incase something gets stuck.

^ I highly doubt they would offer the on-screen buttons, it kills the functionality of the Nexus S.

Anyway, are you guys sure we actually get things like CAMERA ZOOM? Or is that hardware dependent. I can see Digital zoom is of course possible, but I would like if they could do optical.

Why not upgraded to 1080p ? : The Galaxy Nexus has a 5mp snapper too ,so i do not see any problems with the camera [only with the CPU ,so it will be limited to 720p ,or SHOULD]

@ OnlySkillz - Optical zoom is hardware dependent ,none of these phone will have optical zoom !

As for the rest of the features ,they are software dependent ,the NS is a powerful device so everything should work just fine !
I have no frakin' idea if they will put any of the software buttons - that would suck - but ... you never know ,do you ?!

Just found a recent article which had this to say, "Option to use virtual buttons in the UI, instead of taking up capacitive touch buttons". Glad to know it's optional!

Of course the Virtual buttons would be optional,
having them there while having the same exact buttons right underneath would be pointless, and they would receive a lot of criticism for it.

Edit: Would Panoramic shot be a possible software update?

My 2 year old Nokia could pull off Panoramic pretty well, so I'd expect it would be included.

The Nexus S' image sensor isn't capable of streaming enough data for HD video. The hardware bandwidth just isn't there. The zero lag shutter is hardware dependent, again limited by the bandwidth available to the image sensor; same with the simultaneous photo/video thing.

Any updates guys? The Galaxy Nexus got released in UK .. right? I hear it'll come here on Nov.21, 28, or Dec.1 .... Not sure. When do you guys suspect the Nexus S getting 4.0.1?

Well, back in October, there was mention of Google "confirming" that the Nexus S would be getting ICS "within weeks." They weren't clear if that meant within weeks of that statement, or within weeks of the Galaxy Nexus launch. I'd expect the latter.

Since the Galaxy Nexus has launched in Europe, that could mean we'll see ICS for the Nexus S as soon as early December, but considering the Verizon version may not even have launched by then, it could be as late as January when the NS finally gets ICS.

Well, according to Engadget Galaxy Nexus review (posted today), even with ICS, the camera in the new GN may not even be better than the crap in our Nexus S!!!:confused::rolleyes::eek:

So, what exactly are we looking forward to in terms of camera/movie improvement if the darn phone that ICS was designed for takes pics just as bad as ours.........................

Direct quote:
"While the Galaxy Nexus shooter is extremely fast and introduces plenty of new features, it provides little (if any) improvement in picture quality over the Nexus S."

If I recall, Engadget has always been EXTREMELY biased in favor of the iPhone, so they may be being over critical. Based on the photos I've seen taken with the Galaxy Nexus, it does a fine job.

The review mentions nothing about iPhone. I think that Engadget also gave a very good review of the Galaxy SII, which i agree is a great phone.

Galaxy Nexus...another decontenting job by Google.

And if anyone wants to see the horrible pics by GN, then see: (CNET, not Engadget) http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19736_7-57329252-251/samsung-galaxy-nexus-cam-vs-iphone-4s-vs-htc-vivid-vs-samsung-galaxy-s-ii-skyrocket/

Seeing is believing, isn't it?! By far, despite being the latest and greatest (not to mention top dog of Android) phone, the pics are the worst in the group!!!! WTF was Google thinking????!!

In fact, i will go as far to say that i like Galaxy S2 (esp. Sprint Epic Touch) over Galaxy Nexus...and with 3rd party ICS, it will blow GN away in every category, except maybe the screen resolution. Like Nexus S release, Google somehow manages to release a hardware phone that is already outdated at the time of release! ICS is wonderful...and it will only make GS2 that much better than GN.

I was just saying that Engadget is generally harder on non-Apple devices, not that they're comparing it to the iPhone directly.

That first pic is clearly better than the 4S, but all the rest are certainly odd. I have not seen Galaxy Nexus pics from any other sources that were so washed out like that.

Really amateur question here: on the subject of washed out colours, would the ICS update for nexus do anything to the washed out colour temperature change that we saw with 2.3.3? Or would it remain the same? Even an option to calibrate it would be nice.

Well, after flashing ICS, I can definitely tell you it will stay the same. Unless you root, and use a modified kernel that supports Voodoo Control to change the color temperatures. Since when they originally changed it, it was meant to fix the color temperature. (Meaning, I don't think they will ever change it back.)
