Android 4.0

Android 4.0 is out today, but the we won't get the actual phone till november.
I can't seem to find what android 4.0 is like either. I want to have a general idea what I am expecting here...Anyone has any insight on this?
 
The Galaxy Nexus won't be out until November, but what about the OS itself? Any word on when it will be available to say a Nexus S?

I can't imagine it will be too far behind the release of the Galaxy Nexus. As far as I'm aware, they're pretty good at rolling out OS Updates to their handsets.
 
From what I was reading today, ICS looks sweet. I have been looking forward to it and since I've seen it, I really really can't wait. Unfortunately, it seems that ICS won't be available for older devices. As least that's what I read in one article. Was really hoping to get it on both my Droid X and Asus Transformer. :( Looks like I have to wait until it's time for me to upgrade.
 
Playing with ICS virtually. Very impressive. I will have to hold the Galaxy Nexus in my mitts before I decide if I can deal with the huge size and the $300 price tag. Ouch.
 
I wanna see what ICS looks like on a non-SAMOLED screen. To me, SAMOLED screens always have a slight blue-ish hue to them and I want to see what ICS looks like with natural, normal colors.

It's up to the individual manufacturers if will be on older devices or not, but it's already been announced by some companies it will be coming to there new and current devices. For your specific examples, the Droid X is doubtful (but I would think the X2 would; we know the bionic is) but Asus already said on twitter the Transformer would be getting it.

EDIT - Currently announced ICS plans, or at least the ones I know of -

Motorola: Droid RAZR and Bionic confirmed
Samsung: Galaxy Nexus (obviously), Nexus S confirmed
HTC: "considering" which phones to update
Asus: On existing and future tablets

I was very happy to hear my beloved Asus Transformer will be getting ICS. But I'm not holding my breath for my Droid X, lest I turn blue. We'll see as I'm considering options (both Android and non-Android) should my Droid X not get ICS.

I wish I could get it for $300. I am getting it for me and my wife and probably paying around $800 a piece from what I have read. I am pretty sure I will be buying an unlocked one from somewhere outside the US that uses Tmobile's bands, unless it is released on Tmobile on launch day.

I had heard it'll be on VZW which would mean it's CDMA.

I watched the live stream and read the official specs. It will be CDMA/LTE and also GSM/HSPA+ depending on region and carrier. It is not a worldwide Verizon exclusive even if it is in the US at first.

You can always root and install CM9 onto your DX.

Screenshots posted on the web are pretty much a direct dump from the video driver to a png or jpg. The display panel tech used will have no bearing on the image files generated. Find a largish size one of those download it and view it with whatever gallery app you use.

Then show it to other android people at work and tell them you're running a leaked ICS rom "oh but it's only for my phone, wont work on yours"
 
Just a quick question, wasn't Ice Cream Sandwich originally Android Version 2.4? Why the jump in version number? I think I read that this is going to be a unified OS for both phones and tablets, is that why?

Rooting my only means of communication (we pulled the plug on our house phone years ago) makes me nervous. I know it's commonplace nowadays, and easy enough that an idiot such as myself can do it, but I'd rather not. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Fair enough. I rooted my DX because I was tired of waiting on VZW to push out Gingerbread, when there were leaked copies and AOSP ROMs with it. Never looked back since.

And speaking of only 1 phone in the house (and it being a cell phone), you should check out Google Voice. Not necessarily as an app on your phone, but the web browser service portion of it. It'd make a great backup line, in case of whatever...

But if there is no other phone in the house Google Voice wouldn't do much good. Google Voice just forward calls, it isn't a VoIP service.
