Android 4.4.2 KitKat confirmed for Galaxy S3

You notice your phone faster/smoother then stock? My phone doesn't lag at all. And there are skins/roms that resemble touch whiz? I happen to like it. What directions did you follow and are they pretty much spelled out for you?

This is the method I used and it was awesome. Took less than 10 minutes and 5 of those minutes were used for me to contemplate yes or no to root.

You think S3 is awesome now????...wait until you root your phone. I still find things about my phone that still fascinates me.

FYI, I use TWRP for my recovery, CyanogenMod 11 running cm-11-20140217-NIGHTLY-d2spr.zip and it is by far the best. Everything works flawlessly, IMHO. I have not run into any issues with it yet. I also use KK Launcher Prime since I can manipulate every single thing on my phone

If you run into any snags whatsoever, there are tons of people to help on these forums or XDA forums. You will be nervous at first, but once you commit, you will be the most happy person out there. Good Luck!!! My disclaimer...I am not responsible if you screw up your phone...:p...that is why there are excellent instructions available. Very hard to screw things up if you follow instructions.

So really the difference here are the apps running in the background. Stock KK is good, but still has some laggy features....not to mention all the crap your carrier puts on your phone that you can only disable or work hard to uninstall. ASOP ROM's (I love CM11) have no carrier apps to deal with, very little background processes (like 5-6 of them) and is extremely responsive. You literally have full control over your phone.

When comparing Gallery responsiveness on my rooted CM11 phone and my wife's stock phone, there is zero lag on mine and hers take a 1.5 second delay...Think of other apps that are delayed besides this one.

WIFI Tethering is already built into the ROM, no need for third party tools and i can actually make my phone faster by adjusting the CPU speed.

Do I need to read all 77 pages or can I just follow the first page and be done? I don't like to miss any details that might be in those pages. I think that is the most intimidating part for me, missing important things that people add to the original directions.

I would at least recommend you do some research. Yes, the first page is the most important for what you need to get started, but certainly reach out and learn things like, ADP or Recovery or ROM's (there are soooo many of them available for you). There is a lot to be picked up, but reading is one thing, actually doing it is another. I probably took 8 month's before I finally decided to root (I have the tendency of over-analyzing) and have been happy ever since. I recommend the XDA forums for good reads as well as information on each different ROM/OS available to you.

Many choose CyanogenMod because it is sooo very loaded with goodies, but it is not as fast as LiquidSmooth or maybe Carbon, but still very, very fast. I actually have installed and ran 6 different ROM's before finally deciding that CM 11 is the best for my needs. There are so many good things about it.

I, too, was overwhelmed by what was available, but like anything, it takes a little time to get familiar with everything, but remember, there is a ton of good useful information in these forums and everyone is so happy to help.

We're here for you.:)

Looks like you are on Verizon's Network...if so, this guide will walk you through the process. The other link was for Sprint. This is carrier specific because each company does something slightly different, but ultimately, they are easy to root.

Be sure you know the model of your phone, do some quick searches on the best method that works for you and march ahead. If you are on 4.3 version, it is a little different so follow the instructions well. I was under the presumption that you were on Sprint...not too different though in Rooting...you'll be happy.

I think the problem with verizon on 4.3 is that you can easily root it but it still has a secure boot loader that prevents you from flashing anything (custom rom etc)
Maybe its been cracked by now, i dont know

Hmm, I am on Sprint so I don't know much about that. I have seen some articles and postings on rooting and installing customs ROM's on that update, but I haven't read them through enough to say how good or easy it is. I did see some of Rdjr74 past posts and am under the impression that he did NOT update to 4.3, I could be wrong though. If he didn't, that was good. If he did, it will require a bit more reading, but nonetheless, if I had to choose KK Stock or KK Root/ROM, I would go the Root way no matter what.

I'm still on 4.1.2. For over two months I've been delaying the 4.3 update everyday. I've messed around with the ADP drivers for my Droid Incredible back in the day to change my boatload screen but other then that I haven't messed with rooting. That wasn't to difficult, just have to follow the directions. I've read tons and I know there is a easy root method for Verizon, anything pre 4.3. Maybe I'll get serious with it and give it a go.

I would. Even if you just flash official 4.3 touchwiz but with knox removed, make a nandroid backup of the entire phone then have a play around with roms and you can always restore your nandroid to go back to exactly how it was

I'm still sitting on my 4.1.2 for Verizon. Everyday for the past two months I get the pop-up saying I have a system update available. And everyday I default it to the next. I do not want 4.3 and if Verizon funks up 4.4 then I won't want that either.

Same here. I've been deferring everyday for the same amount of time. I'm wondering if when 4.4 comes out will the notification for 4.3 go away? Or will it look the same and you just won't know which version you're accepting?

Thats ridiculous mate eh!
The s2 is fine on kitkat and the s3 flies.
I wonder what the real reason is behind it

Yeah search for the program from a dev called Adam Outler. He made like a version of odin that works on Mac or Linux. Ive never used it

Well, my phone was in my pocket and I was signed on to XDA looking at the video instructing me how to root the 4.2.1. Took my phone out of my pocket and was horrified to see the phone in the process of being updated; I mean horrified :( . Tried to reverse the procedure but to no avail! Somehow I inadvertently upgraded to version 4.3:confused:

I immediately went to an area that had no WIFI connections and used my phone to try and tether as I have done in the past...and it worked:D

After all this time worrying about switching to 4.3 and losing my tether, I didn't lose it!!! Don't know what the future will hold, but right now I have a smug smile on my face :)

Indeed, I lost tethering after the 4.3 upgrade.

Are you on a share everything plan?

Wonder if the unbranded/unlocked s3 will get it before the carrier locked ones this time.
It stands to reason that they should but they didnt with jellybean :)

Virgin Mobile is alleged to be getting the Kit Kat update on the S3
by March or April this year.

I'm curious, Did you read this somewhere? If so you got a link?

I ask because I'm curious if Virgin Mobile would not release it for some crazy reason.
