Android 4.4.2 KitKat confirmed for Galaxy S3

The headline is somewhat misleading, as the article states that the 3G only variant of the S3 will not be updated. It still may be inaccurate, since I'm not sure which S3s are 3G only, but they definitely were not saying that all S3s wouldn't get the update.

I THINK its the international version that's not getting the update, due to the 1GB of ram...

I'm pretty sure the US variants all have 2gb of ram. And even the S3 mini has what...1.5gb?

I'm on Verizon and my S3 just rec'd the update to KK. I've downloaded and installed and so far everything's working well. The download and install was quite quick. So far, the only thing that's jumped off the phone at me is my notification bar's icons are now all white (there use to be colors to some of the icons... for example, my battery icon use to be green). I'll fart around with it some more and see what I find.

Android version: 4.4.2
Baseband version: I535OYUDNE1
Build number: KOT49H.I535VRUDNE1

I think I've asked this question somewhere before but I never updated to 4.3 because of all the problems. So will I have to get the 4.3 update and then the KitKat update or will it just update straight to KitKat?

I think you have to update to 4.3 first. That's what I'd recommend anyway.

But would 4.4.2 be ready right away after I did that? Because I wouldn't want to be on 4.3 for any length of time. It would probably be a roll of the dice if 4.4.2 was ready for my phone anyway.

That honestly depends on your carrier. You could always try the kies method and see if it tells you you can update to 4.4

That he did, I wonder if he decides to root it again! Every issue I see on here I usually want to answer with a root related solution (aside from hardware issues obviously) lol :D

Lol no I'm good, one thing that kinda ticks me off is I'm missing some features in my firmware but I don't know how to reflash it I kinda forgot :/

Have you been getting an update notice? And yes you will have to update to 4.3 first, then to 4.4.2. What method are you using to update?

Oh yeah I've been getting an update notice everyday for months now. I just keep deferring it to the next day.

I guess I just use the normal update method. That's the only way I know how to do it.

Your phone should ask you to update 4.3, then ask you to update 4.4.2 right after you update it. That is of course your phone has received the 4.4.2 OTA.

I wish it would be that quick. Like I said earlier I don't want to stay on 4.3 any longer than necessary. I'm going to give it another couple of weeks or so just to see if any problems crop up with 4.4.2 and then go ahead and take the chance.

Question: Just updated my daughters S3 to 4.4.2.

The update said it was going to support new emoticons, I assumed like the ones on my GS5.

My daughter was excited about this (she's 13), but they are still the same as before....do we have to download something special to get those?

Thanks in advance.

No, when you are on the Samsung messaging app and you use the stock Samsung keyboard, press the smiley face on the left of the space bar and there you have your emoticons, enjoy :)

So far, 4.4.2 is VERY fast compared to 4.3, the only complaint I have about is the battery life... But other than that, it's a pretty good update.

updated my unrooted S3 this morning and so far so good. only big difference i have noticed is 2 new apps ( emergency alerts & isis mobile wallet)

Downloaded and installed Kit Kat 4.4.2 on my Verizon S3 LTE last night. so far so good! Battery life seems to be better (at least I want that to be true...time will tell for sure) as it was horrible with Jelly Bean 4.3, no longer receiving messages about my Wifi being unstable and now have emoji's for my keyboard...life is good again:)!

I've never hesitated installing an update, but will admit I was not looking forward to this one. Problems and issues I've read about re: SD card the main reason. I just received my notice and I just
hit download....holding my breath now to see what I get. I've seen some positive messages up there so I'm trying to be optimistic!
