Android Live Scores

I really like this app simply because of the notifications. However I have noticed over the last week that my battery is not holding up as well.

After digging into the battery usage, I have determined that Live Scores has more partial wake time than any other app aside from the android system and it has way more network usage than any other app.

Here are today's usage details. Phone has been on for about 8hrs with very light use. I get alerts for every score on 2 NCAA and 1 NFL football teams, game end on 2 NCAA football teams, and game end on 4 NCAA basketball teams.

Partial Wake
- Android System = 41m
- Live Scores = 13m

Network Usage for Live Scores
- Received = 1,860,266 bytes
- Sent = 7,940,199 bytes
- Total = 9,800,465 bytes

Almost 10MB of data seems way high, especially almost 8MB being sent. Why is this so high when only receiving updates? I have not had the app itself open once today. Just getting updates.

Please advise on if this is now normal or if something is out whack. I can't continue to use if this the main drain on my battery.

Thanks!

Problem tonight.

I had been getting updates for a hockey game that ended around 7.

I was then watching the giants game that started around 8:30.

I never got the start of game notice or the update after the first score. I then went into the app and got the first score notification immediately.

Any idea why that might have happened?

First off, thanks for the best sports apparently on the market.

A few suggestions...

1. A scrolling 1x4 widget.

2. Options for score updates on high scoring sports like basketball. For example, instead of just quarter or half change, allow an option for 5 or 10 minute update increments.

3. This is probably the most wanted by me. The ability to change the line on given games. Also, under the team that is currently covering, have something to indicate this. Also in my dream app this would also be incorporated in to the notifaction and widget. :)

Thanks for the great app!

The sent/recv data seems outrageous - are you sure that's only the last 8 hours?

I'm running a droid x and I see 1/10th of those numbers on mine and it hasnt been reset in a week.

Can you tell me what device, android OS and what version of Live Scores you are using?

Thanks!

I'll keep an eye on the server load - the server is under utilized during the week, it could be that on Sunday its slammed due to all the football alerts.

Widget is already in the works, I like #2. #3 is probably too much work for our current schedule, but I'll add it to the suggestion box and maybe some of the other guys here at yahoo will like it too.

I had forgot to try and recreate my notification issue on Saturday, but I know for a fact it wasn't because both teams were selected for notifications.

Not sure it was do to the server. What I thought was weird is that I got the notification as soon as I launched the app.

I'm wondering if maybe the app had "closed" and was no longer monitoring for score changes.

But, like I said, only a couple of hours earlier (during prime football time) I was getting updates for the hockey game properly.

When it didn't work, there was only the 1 NFL game going on, so the load on the server shouldn't have been too bad.

I guess I should have gone into a task manager and saw what the status of the live scores app was prior to running it.

If the app were shut down by the OS due to limited resources, the alarm manager should have turned it back on, unless you have task killer set to kill background services or the system didn't have enough resources to give to the new task launched by the alarm manager. Just some guesses. If you notice it happen again, check to see how much memory you have on your phone and check your taskiller settings (if you use taskiller).

### MY BAD! ###

Regarding the game-start notification, for NCAABB currently this notification will not work through Live Scores 1.4.6 but we will be releasing the next update on December 16th (give or take a day) which will have a fix. Sorry about that - it's my fault - I'm returning an unparsable string from the server for the period during pre-game (which is necessary to determine the transition from pre-game to in-game).

If you live in SF - I'll buy you a beer ;)

Is that the same for NCAAFB? Those are the start notifications I have been missing?

i find that i, also, don't get the start of game alerts for any sports unless i open the app itself. which isn't a big deal to me just because i know what time the games start.

Will this be the update with the widget?

So here's the problem. There's two developers assigned to Live Scores and the one that was doing the widget got reassigned temporarily - so I'm hoping to get him back before the next release with enough time to finish the widget. If not, it could get skipped again. Considering the holiday season - we're on a pretty tight time budget. I'm crossing my fingers.

Be sure that the widget is priority #1 (with the exception of unforeseeable high-priority bugs).

Thats a different problem which I've heard before but am unable to reproduce. If the alarm-manager doesn't get set for whatever reason, or the background service is unable to start for whatever reason, the alert system wont be able to do its job until given cpu-priority from the operating system - this happens when you start the app.

It seems to be uncommon but I have it on my list of todos.

Just saw the new update. Thanks for continuously working on this app. It's great.

I think I saw a post somewhere that mentioned the NHL standings. Any chance to get the "conference standings" as an option instead of the "division standings"? Hockey is funny like that. :)

Can't wait to see the new UI tweeks with future updates.

edit: oh yeah, i too have had some alert issues until I either wake up the phone or open the app. i haven't seen any consistency with it though. seems random.

What phone are you using?

Unfortunately we can't test on all the phones and the Android API is more like a guideline rather than a spec because each manufacturer does their own thing.

We test on a Droid, Droid X, G1 w/1.6, G1 w/2.1, and an LG Ally.
And I get some help from a few co-workers that have personal droids which include the Nexus One and Incredible.

Still waiting on Yahoo to get me some new devices.

No worries. Just leaving some feedback. This is still the most useful and practical sports app for me.

I use a rooted, HTC Droid Eris running a 2.2 ROM (Nonsensikal).

Maybe a bug...

This weekend I had all sorts of issues.

1. Yesterday I was following two games. Ncaafb. Idaho vs Fresno St and unlv vs San deigo St. Whenever I was in app watching, the graphics nor the down and distance worked at all. It just wasn't there.

2. Last Wednesday there was a ncaabb game that just never started. (In the app). It was Weber St vs someone. Sports tap had it.

3. On Friday one of the NCAafb games sent a game start notification but no score updates. (Yes I double checked to make sure that score change was checked. )

Just thought I'd give you a heads up.

Darn I replied to this and this it didn't save.
I apologize for the lack of updates - sometimes our providers don't send us updates on college games. Usually they're better about Top25 teams but others are less frequent or none at all.

I've been slightly sidetracked with our facebook apps, and haven't been able to tackle any Android stuff. But, that looks like it's wrapping up, and I can get back to the widget for now.

As to the first version of the widget - we're starting simple so we can get it out before the holidays. Basically, it's 1x2 with score/time. You can have as many of these as you want, with each one dedicated to one of your favorite teams.

Future versions will have the ability to scroll, but that's not going to make the initial release.
