Android Live Scores

Yeah the app will remember your timezone as long as the app is active. you might have to do a force stop and then go into the app again to update the timezone.

okay but my whole point is, i was recieving the updates. when i got up this morning, i woke up to the final score alert of the phils. and before i went to bed, alerts were being sent through.

so something must have done the trick the fact that the phillies played at 10 PM in ET last night...so it was well after that cut off

Lots of variables there, you uninstalled the app, resubscribed to alerts, changed the timezone.

We've devised a plan that should resolve all the alerts issues. Our draft alerts coming out soon will be using the new system as sort of a test. If all goes well we should be rolling it out for all alerts in the next few releases. Its not push notification but its close. Im pretty excited about it.

I was just rereading an earlier post and didn't realize you could swipe from side to side for scores. I saw the red arrows by the date but was hoping this was for swiping for ALL sports, not just different dates within the SAME sport. May an option for this, as on weekends, college football, NHL, NFL, NBA, MLB playoffs, etc. would be great to swipe all the different sports.

Red arrows by the date? Are you using an Android 1.5 device? I think you're using a very old version of the app.

Yep, you can swipe for date, no future plans for swiping across sports. I think one of our competitor apps does that though - I forget which. I like being able to flip back to yesterdays scores for a quick refresher and then back to today again, then flip to tomorrow to subscribe to a game alert or something along those lines.

You are talking nfl draft correct? Can we subscribe to those in the current app our will there be an update?

NFL Draft. There's going to be an update soon - we're cutting it kinda close but we'll get it out before the draft (28th).

yeah. but ive done it all before except for change my timezone. but tonight went alright. i got flyers updates for 2-0. but nothing after. then, the phils came on at 10 again, and it hasnt missed a beat. i dont know. maybe just because the phillies are on the west coast?? could it be maybe the application within itself has a timezone issue, but it somehow showing the correct times?

if its not push notifications, but its really close, then what the hell is it? theres different types of notifications?

No mets 8:15 or so last night.

Flyerskid, I know this is against both our beliefs, but how about you subscribe to the mets and I to the phillies so we can compare notes with the same setup?

FYI: ESPN ScoreCenter uses left-right swipes for different sports, up-down swipes for different days. ;)

i did it. i only got the final score though for the mets game. but, i was without service for the most part due to working in a back room most of the day.

I've set various alerts for the three remaining NBA games for today. I'll let everyone know in the morning what comes through and what doesn't (hopefully none!)

... Maybe the alerts server is just a Lakers fan?

Got all mets updates for their day game. So far got start of game and 1-0 update for the phillies game.

Very interested to see what happens from here since I'm nite in the window when I don't normally get updates.

Got the 1-1 update at 9:30. So why are we getting updates for west coast games starting at 8et but not getting updates for east coast games starting at 8et?

This is definitely a program or server error.

I sure hope you can find this soon.

I think I know whats going on. 8pm ET crosses the UTC (aka GMT) date barrier.
Eastern Time = UTC - 4. So that means when it's April 23rd @ 8pm on the east coast, its April 24th @ 12am UTC. Thats tomorrow! The system starts looking for games on the 24th @ 8pm but can't find it because game is really on the 23rd.

I'm sure I can fix it... I just gotta find it now...

As it is now, the device manages the game schedule and does comparisons between game states to determine if there is a score change or period change, etc. It works well most the time but when the system is unable to get data, such as going through a tunnel, the phone can get whacked.

The new approach is the let the server manage all the data and detect all the events, the phone will just check periodically to see what events occurred since the last check. So even if you skip a few checks (lost internet) it will pick up where you left off the next time you get a hold of the server.

It should be 186282.4 times more reliable.

It sounds more reliable! :) Now I'm excited. It kind of should have been like that anyway?? It also sounds like more battery life for my phone because my phone isn't constantly managing its own schedule?

P.S.
a little suggestion for the NHL / NBA playoffs, we could use a series score in the best of 5/7 series (Ex.. PHI leads series 2-1) on the 'scores overview' of all the league's scores. Idk if youd be able to work that in time for this year.

same goes for baseball when that rolls around. :) VERY HELPFUL!!!

There's a lot of misinformation that goes around about battery usage and a lot of that info has given our app a funky smell.

The truth is, our app holds a partial wake lock open for a few minutes a day while alerts are running. During the partial wake lock, the phone isn't sleeping but there is only slightly more battery drain during a partial wake lock (compare to a full wake lock) than there is when the phone is asleep. The reason is, partial wake locks don't turn on the lights (aka the screen), just the cpu and the lights are the biggest battery hog of them all. The cpu isn't a big battery drain unless its at full throttle. When we hold open the partial wake lock for those few minutes throughout the day (actually a few seconds at a time spread out throughout the day totaling a few minutes), most of that time the cpu is waiting for a response from a server, so the cpu isn't doing anything and not draining battery.

So people think our app is eating up all their battery because they look in the "Spare Parts" app and see some small amount of wake lock time with our name next to it, but that's not the case. If you look at battery usage, you'll see the screen is usually the highest. Live Scores may occasionally show up towards the top of battery usage list if you've just reset the battery statistics (charged your phone) and then started using live scores - but this would happen with any app - I mean you can't use your phone without using SOME battery. :P

Anyway, thought I'd throw a little clarification out there.

In the end, this change won't make any significant difference in battery usage. It will definitely be less, but the difference will be slight, because the current usage should already be slight.

You legend!
So that would also explain why im having problems sometimes? (Im in the GMT timezone)

I woke up this morning with "Game End" alerts for the Spurs/Grizzlies and Thunder/Nuggets game so im going to guess that the "Qtr Change" alerts also worked but I have no way for defnitely telling as I fell asleep shortly before both games started :/

Best of luck in finding a fix guys, if I can help at all then just let me know

I'd be happy to beta test any workaround you come up with.

Yeah ditto for me
I find all this sort of stuff bizarrely interesting! haha

EDIT: I've had every single alert from all the early games today, so I definitely think you might be onto something about the different timezones.

Been doing some research on the alerts problem and I'm certain I've found it. The fix is a server fix so it wont require an update.

It appears as though its only breaking for "Team Alerts." Can you guys that are having problems do me a favor and try subscribing to some "Game Alerts" and tell me how that turns out?

Thanks - fix is on the way!
