Android Lollipop - What do you expect from new Android version?

Performance issues can have nothing to do with the CPU or GPU. Its a beautifully vague term. Could be just issues with a screen that large. Without hearing a proper explanation, its hard to know what's really going on.

I am curious about it though...Have you tried contacting them? Either through the normal PR/Customer service routes or by asking a Googler on G+?

I'd be really interested in seeing what they say.


From their history on explanations - google generally has a good reason for doing the things they do. I may not always agree with why - but the explanation helps understand
 
the 'excuse' i saw was Google's response to the many who were asking about its omission. as usual they utter a vague phrase with few words, much like their own error messages. not helpful to say the least. i have tried contacting them but i have never managed to get hold of a living, breathing, human just yet. kinda wouldn't surprise me if Google was actually run by robots...

Sadly no amount of feedback has done away with the extra step to back out of a YouTube video or returned the checkboxes to the AOSP Email/Gmail apps. we all know how they despise SD Cards despite TONS of feedback to the contrary. they're becoming more and more like Apple each time. I know i'm not the only one to make that comparison either. Their whole obsession with flat design has invalidated 99% of the need to use their apps these days. the only time i use Play Store is to update a paid app from long ago---because using another store just gives me that stupid 'signature conflict' error.
 
My guess is that it has something to do with the resolution. It's the only Nexus device with a resolution above 1920x1080 after all. I remember that since they did cite "performance" as the reason they left it out, that it's possible that the GPU isn't powerful enough for that resolution. I had similar issues with performance on the TF700 since the Tegra 3 was too weak for 1920x1080. But the argument becomes weaker because as you said, it can be achieved with root. Google allows you to obtain it with little resistance if you really desire it, which is about as un-apple as you can get.
 
then why does it work fine on the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition? same resolution and everything. yet Samsung provided transparent bars since version 4.3 on that one.

Losing every bit of data and having to redownload more than 20GB of apps, games, videos and music (plus whatever my entire Play Movies library takes up when stored locally) over a 4G LTE data plan is not a good enough workaround to a problem which should NOT need root to fix. they could just as easily enable the feature. instead they play Apple with the 'we know what you want' crap. i suppose to Google, they assume everyone is blessed with super-fast internet.

I've just lost faith in Google. hence why updates are not that important to me anymore. i have been let down ever since Android 4.1. the last version that had any touch of innovation. The point is, one should not need to invalidate the warranty and jailbreak/root their device to get a feature which should be built-in.

Doesn't the Note 10.1 2014 have a physical home button and capacitive back/menu buttons? Not quite sure how it has transparant nav buttons :confused:

And I agree, that losing all data from the unlocking process is a pain, which is why I advice anyone who buys a Nexus device who has any potential of rooting it to unlock day 1 so that you don't have to worry about it. Luckily, that's fixed right now thanks to the new Towelroot + this app allows you to unlock and root without the data loss.

Before this exploit, you could use the adb backup tool that would make restoring all the app loss from the data wipe moot and obviously backing up media isn't difficult. Not as clean, but something that can be done.
 
transparent status bar. it has no nav bar you're correct. the Nexus 10 has black status AND black nav bar. to be honest, i have always preferred physical buttons. saves a mark on the screen and doesn't get hit accidentally while gaming.

The Nexus 10 was so overpromoted and recommended here and online i bought it hoping it would be more supported than other tablets, seeing as Google was supposed to support the darned thing for so long, but they have pretended it has never existed from day one. it's the most unsupported tablet in their lineup. most games won't even run because Play Store claims they're not compatible. i feel i was robbed the $499 to get it. the lack of support and lack of SD slot should have reduced the price by 1/2 at least.

Yeah, I can see that interest in the Nexus 10 had died down since the initial release. I think part of it had something to do with the success of the Nexus 7 line and smaller tablets in general. Most 10 inch tablets seem to have fallen out of favor which is why I believe Google didn't release a second gen Nexus 10 and now there are rumors of the new Nexus tablet in between the 7 and 10 inch range. As for hitting the buttons, I can second my frustration with it. One of my feature things about my TF700, it had a 4th button in the middle that needed you to scroll left or right to unlock/lock the other 3 nav buttons. While locked, it would render the other 3 buttons useless until unlocked.
 
well to be even more honest, i do enjoy the support that Samsung has provided with my Note 10.1 and Tab 3 8. the version of Android really does not matter to me anymore (for many reasons--the fact the recent versions lack the vital features reducing it to Jelly Bean is one such reason) so the only incentive to OTA a Samsung is to get the features from the 'next flagship' for free without upgrading. the S5's new TouchWiz, though i am not fond of the icon theme (hid them in a folder) is a great improvement with better options which was my only incentive to get KitKat on my 10.1

so it's not that the 10-inch is a letdown, but the Nexus 10 was. i probably paid far more for the Note 10.1 but i'm convinced i will be happy with it for at least a year or two.

People griped when 'tablet UI' (left-oriented nav bar buttons, right-oriented status bar all on the bottom) was gone, but i hated that darn thing. it was worse then as the games would often place the virtual analog stick right above the 'back' softkey which would exit the game. i'd lose level after level of Brothers in Arms II because of that. was happy to see it go.
 
I predict they will continue their trend of reduced functionality along with less intuitive interface.
 
Don't use nav bar peeps. Expanded Desktop and Pie ftw
After like a week it's second nature.
Combine that with 'Hover' and 'floating more' . I think you have the perfect UI. (just my opinion)
Would hate to run stock android again.
I'm not an Android purist lol
(not too off topic since we. we're. Talkin bout nav bar.
Maybe Google will go all gesture navigation! :eek:
 
Typing from my Nexus 10 after 4.4.3, hoping they finally enable transparent nav/status bars on the darn thing. Still not happening yet!
