Root Another Wifi Tethering thread

I'm hoping someone can provide me with some assistance to my wifi tether problem. I rooted my HTC Evo just a few days ago and am trying to get the wifi tether to work with my home computer. I can get it to connect to the phone, but it is not providing any internet.

Reading through and searching this site has shown me many different threads and ways to fix this problem. I have uninstalled wifi tether, reinstalled, tried many different versions. I've tried it with wep security on and off, I've even tried Barnacle Wifi Tether, but alas, no luck. The connection just will not provide internet to my desktop even though it will connect to the phone.

Strange thing is, I have no problem with it on my laptop. My most recent try is with Barnacle, and that works great with my laptop, but won't provide internet to my desktop.

Any help would be appreciated. I've been troubleshooting this for a few days now and it's making me go grey.

I had this issue, and it drove me crazy not being able to figure out what I was doing wrong. I'd tried every tip out there.

Turns out, it's because I replaced the default shell (sh) with bash. Most people just run bash on top of sh, but I actually replaced sh. That, apparently, broke tether (could get the IP, but couldn't get the internet).

I'm not saying that this is the reason you're stuck, but if you've tried everything you possibly can, it might be some weird one-off thing that you might have done...

I ended up figuring out by restoring some old nandroids which I discovered that tethering was working, so I started to see what the difference was. Eventually, I narrowed it down to my bash replacement.

Unfortunately, a large number of problems can cause this exact symptom, so there's no easy solution.... unless you get lucky and stumble upon the problem relatively quickly.
