or if you're comfortable with adb you can do it that way.
I dont have time to type up how to install apps via adb, class in 10 min.

I installed astro file manager and then tried clicking on the link, but it says "Cannot download. The content is not supported on this phone."

oh wait...never mind...didn't read the entire post...I can't put it on my sd card right now (work comp doesn't have a reader)

Well good luck! and i believe there is a setting somewhere in astro that allows you to download any file type in the stock browser
