Anyone else not ROOTING on purpose?

I would like to root and have free wireless tether (after it stops being free) and to get rid of dumb stock apps... But I probably will not until closer to warranty being up... This does everything I want it to, and once I start changing roms, I cant stop...

I haven't rooted yet because I don't own the phone yet! Waiting on Costco to bring them in stock because I like the fact that they would waive the restocking fee if I didn't like the phone.

You can bet that as soon as that thing is out of the box though, I'm firing up ADB and rooting. I've had a Droid 1 since launch date and I can't live without that Superuser app in my app drawer.

I agree with offanairplane... if you're just rooting to get rid of the bloatware... it really doesn't do anything other than free up some space. Once the devs are able to create stable custom ROMs that will take full advantage of optimizing the phone... and SetCPU is working, I'll root.

But right now? What else does root give you at this point? Yes it's been oc'd... but I don't want to be that guinea pig. Wireless tether isn't really a big deal until May 15th rolls around.

There are stable ROMS (what do you mean optimize the phone?), and SetCPU works perfectly. So...why not root?

root = 3x battery life... I had to root my friends phone because I would get 14 hours of battery and he would get 5

So far for me root has:

1)Fixed the slight choppyness when you scroll in the browser (first rom, that I ever used that's done this). On the stock rom, when I compared it to my Incredible the Thunderbolt was just a little better in scrolling.....Now?....super smooth. I'm still amazed I can't see it anymore. Its just not there.

2)Fixed the gps. Now locks as fast as my Incredible.

3)Fixed the battery issue by dropping mhz when the phone is in standby mode,

4)Removed bloat that could possibly be accessing data in the background wasting battery power.

Shh holygrail, you're tempting me.

I'm happy with sense atm.

My TB. will be rooted soon enough, just enjoying the out of box experience right now.

The only reason I want to root right now is to remove all the preinstalled apps (bloatware). I'm really impressed with this phone so far.

Agreed. There is a ton of stuff I want off my phone. Though I probably won't get into any fancy ROMs or special stuff. I just want something fast and stable, which the phone is. I've always been a fan of debloated stock ROMs that stay pretty close to the original appeal of the phone. Virtuous was a slice of heaven for me on my Incredible and I hope to find something similar here. I probably won't root until there is a good working version of Honeycomb ready for us, though.

I ran Virtuous on my Incredible as well. As others have pointed I would also like to get a underclocked kernel to save on battery. I went through the same cycle with the Incredible. Eventually I'll get bored and root.

Small world. I ran and still run Virtuous on my Incredible. :)

I would like to point out to you (and others) that Root is not just about bloatware. Customizing your phone is a big part, as is having the ability to back it up. I could transition to any android phone I want, and within the hour all of the apps would be just how I want them, with login credentials and all. That being said, root is not for everyone--you just do not need to accost people about their decision.

Also, the gold game is ~130MB. I do not know if it is originally that big or if it downloads most of it, but that is huge.

And you do not need to "acost" me just because I asked a simple question. I think you read some smart@ss tone into what I said that just wasn't there.

I didn't say rooting was "all about bloatware."
I know what rooting is all about. I had an Eris before the thunderbolt. And for me rooting was all about performance.

But I hear people like the guy I quoted make a big deal about removing a few stock apps, and I am just seriously trying to understand what benefit comes from that, if these apps weren't running in the background constantly or something.

Why does there have to be a benefit? Maybe it just irks some people, and they just want the peace of mind of removing them.

You are KILLING ME!!!

While I never really noticed the choppiness when scrolling, I do have the same issues you point out in bullet points 2,3 & 4.

Now I want to waste a whole day at work rooting this sucker.

What ROM are you running?

If that is the case, then peace of mind is the benefit. Which is fine if those apps bother you and you are willing to void your warranty to get rid of them, more power to you.

If I am going to void my warrant, I need some tangeable benefits for doing so.

I'm sorry, but rooting alone does not add any battery life.

I guess if you want to pick fly crap out of pepper and take the phrase "Rooting alone" to the nth degree in literalness. Then you may be correct.

Rooting along with SetCPU (which cannot be done without rooting) and removing bloatware that runs in the background (which cannot be done without rooting) will most likely improve battery charge.

Since we are being literal though. The correct term would be "Battery charge".

Battery life implies the end of the battery being able to hold a charge, thus it would be dead and at the end of it's life.

It's not nit-picking, it's just pointing out what some might not know.
I am amazed how many people bought a thunderbolt as their first smart-phone or their first android phone. And if they read something like this:

Two_cents said:

They get the impression that rooting your thunderbolt will triple your battery life. It won't. I don't think there is even a rom out there that will really triple your battery life (I'd have to see it for myself), but even if there is, the rom is what tripled your battery life, not rooting. Rooting just made installing the rom possible. And putting a non-stock rom on your phone not only voids the warranty, but it is taking a big risk on making your phone not function properly, especially this early on in the development of a brand new phone. People need to be aware of that, and all these comments like "root your thunderbolt and it will fix everything you don't like about your phone" are a little misleading.

With my Eris I had nothing to lose. I paid $0 for the phone, and it was old enough that it was already out of warranty anyway. And it was slower than molasses in January, and when I rooted people had been rooting that phone for over a year, and there were Roms that had been revised like 15 times already, and tons of people had already tried them out, so I felt pretty sure when I installed one that I wouldn't have any problems. Even the rooting process had been extremely simplified.

But that is not true for the thunderbolt.
The phone is new, so people haven't been developing 3rd-party roms very long for this phone. And not that many people have tested them out. Most of us didn't get our thunderbolts for free, but rather renewed our contracts or even added a line and still paid $250 for it. And unlike the Eris it is still under warranty, and we don't want to lose that.
And also unlike the Eris, the thunderbolt has plenty of horsepower even in stock form. So the dire need for romming isn't really there as far as performance goes. I mean you might get better performance by romming, but it's not as though you don't get really good performance with stock.

It's all about risk versus benefit, and in my humble opinion, with the thunderbolt, right now the risk is much higher than the benefit. So it's just not worth it.

For those of you who think I am slamming those who want to root. I am not.
But this is a thread about people "not" wanting to root right now, so I think my comments are appropriate, since I don't want to root right now. I am certain I will eventually root, but it will be after my warranty is expired, and after some really stable roms have been proven reliable. I am not one to trade reliability for performance.

And no, "battery charge" is not the correct way of saying what I meant. You don't get any more "battery charge" by rooting. Your battery's charging capacity doesn't increase by rooting. But the life of your battery does increase, not because the battery changes, but because you are using it less. "Battery life" is pretty widely accepted as meaning the amount of time a battery will last between charges.

Yeah, you really can't notice it, until you compare it. Then you can tell.

Rooting along with SetCPU (which cannot be done without rooting) and removing bloatware that runs in the background (which cannot be done without rooting) will most likely improve battery charge.

That did not bear out on anything I've rooted, from my old Eris to my Fascinate and Galaxy Tab.

I've rooted and pared down everything and have observed no benefit other than a slimmed down app drawer, along with a few more apps I wanted available for rooted devices only, and of course the increased space in storage (a lot of which can be achieved in 2.2 by using the "move to sd card" feature in the application manager).

The access to things in /system/app is fun, because there sits all the proprietary junk (for some of us) that the big corporations don't want us to remove, but we can remove it anyway.. mwa-hahaha. Big deal.

If you want to impact battery life in a positive way (make it last longer), have a look at your media usage, along with syncing and background updating apps/widgets. There are other things, but those are the big ones besides roaming and/or fringe tower coverage which causes your device to stay busy looking for a signal.

I noticed the exact opposite with my Eris. When I rooted it and used SetCPU to damn near shut the CPU off when idle, I did notice an increase in battery life. Since it's widely accepted as life, I'll be a lemming as well.:D

Using a word that makes more sense, is not being a lemming. It's being logical.

I had to charge my Eris every night. And at least once at work. And if I wanted to use Pandora in my car, I had to have it plugged into the car charger, if I didn't want the battery to drain down.

After I rooted and installed xtrRom_5.0 which was considered to be one of the most streamlined, lean and mean roms available for the Eris, I noticed no change in battery life. But then, I didn't ROM my phone for battery life. I Rommed for performance, to make a slow phone a little faster.

Come on guys, you both made good points. Do we really want it to turn into this?
