anyone get the update

Does the option to 'update' just pop up on your screen or what? I live in California ans still haven't seen it.

Yes or you can open up your dialer and *#*#2432546#*#* and hit send wait a little bit and in your notification bar it'll say checkin success. Then go to setting>about phone>system update to see if it's download the update or not

I got mine in dallas (fort worth), but then again i also just send a long list of complaints about the phone a few days ago, anybody noticed a difference

City ID is really starting to piss me off. it's slowing my phone down, i don't want it, and it's impossible to turn it off or remove it without rooting. thanx LG, more useless crap to weigh down an underpowered phone.

EDIT: after rebooting this morning Droid Mini Golf and Baseball Superstars are still not working correctly. message says "error parsing data package." anyone else having this problem with any apps?

I got the update box this morning, but I'm rooted and running Velocity 0.2. Is there anything worthwhile in this update?

City ID doesn't even show the correct city for me- everything is about 15-20 miles off from where the person is.

You do know this is the LG Ally forum, right?

It seems that everyone is getting acquainted to the recent Android update for the LG Ally. My issue is with 3rd party apps - specifically Moxier (although there are others). The new update has caused the icons to appear as the Android default and names them com.moxier.mail. etc, etc. Also, when I attempt to launch the program, it says the home page has unexpectedly stopped and forces close. I uninstalled the app and reinstalled it and it worked fine.......until I rebooted, then the same problem emerged.

Any thoughts?

A couple of my apps are doing the same thing,I just try to avoid rebooting the phone for now.Possibly the developers of the apps will update them?

So I have root on both mine and my wife's Ally' (though I don't operate in root unless necessary) and we both got the update notifiers. I accepted the update on both phones but each one stopped seemingly ceased downloading. The icon changed to an exclaimation in a triangle. The phones then reset. I'm seeing none changes that have been discussed here and the changelog is still ended in an 8...not b. Any suggestions...anyone had this happen (root or no root)? Any help would be welcome.

Thank you

If you removed any of the files the update would have changed (like stock apps) it would fail when patching.

Will I run into this again when froyo appears. I removed things such as lg home theme, lg based bloatware, some amazon nonsense and that was about it. Removed nothing which would affect the core of the OS.

THANKS AGAIN FOR ANY HELP AND INSIGHT

If they release it as a diff/patch type of thing, like this time, then yes. If it's released as a full replacement for the old files, it may not require the old files to be there (but will be a much bigger download). I don't know if an OTA has ever been done this way, though, so this is pure speculation.

Last question...Were I to do a factory reset (would that provide the opportunity to receive the OTA again)? From the info I've read around the net, the update has cause problems that may or may not be resolved, but I don't want to be locked out of FROYO (assuming it is true that we'll get it). Any ideas?

Okay, now, last question. I got root with Androot but am confused with Flashing a ROM or kernal to my phone but I really want this phone to work better. Any suggestions?

Thanks for all your help.

Thanks for all your help.

A factory reset only clears the data partition, and won't actually reset to factory state if you're rooted and have messed with the other partitions (in this case /system, at least). You'll need to reflash to stock if you want the OTA update.

Considering this 2.1 update is brand new, I'm assuming Froyo won't be coming out for some time. Therefore, I'd focus on making your phone work the best *now*, then worry about getting Froyo when the time is right. Meaning, don't be afraid to go back to modding just to preserve a pristine phone for the 2.2 OTA (if it comes).

I am not a fan of ROMs, personally. I have tried a couple but nothing has compelled me to stick with them over the stock ROM that I remove apps from and tweak to my liking. What I do recommend, however, is checking out turbo4 at http://androidforums.com/ally-all-things-root/180796-gnm_turbo-jit-oc-8-mflops.html which is a JIT compiler for the Ally. This gives big performance gains. In one version, it comes with an overclockable kernel, which also helps.

If you want to try a custom ROM (which I wouldn't ever discourage -- there's great value in trying these things for yourself) Velocity is a popular one. It is located at http://androidforums.com/trident/17...ally-big-release-fast-android-2-1-stable.html and its fans claim some speed improvements (I don't dispute this, I just didn't like the DROID sounds and symbols everywhere and couldn't get the plain theme to apply without things blowing up).

My last recommendation is to come on over to the All Things Root subforum and start exploring. There's lots to discover ;-)
