Anyone keeping their hero?

Hello all I am new to this forum and I have been reading the remarks above, very interesting.
I am not eligible for an upgrade until November so I will be stuck with my Moment till then. I have been thinking about getting the EVO but I played with it for a few days and as many of you said the Hero really has similar features.
I love to have the hardware of the EVO but I can't justify the $10 premium charge for the data (4G - video calling ) that I will probably never use.

What are your thoughts on going to the Hero from My Moment even though the Hero or the Moment will NOT be getting the 2.2 Froyo update, per Sprint/HTC?

Some people have mentioned rooting, can someone explain what is to me please and how is it done?
Thanks in advance to all.

Chances are the Hero may not be around then.

As far as comparing the Hero to the Evo, that would be like comparing a base model Camaro to a Corvette. The Hero is a good phone, I enjoyed it while I used it, but I had to do a lot of tinkering (rooting, custom roms) to get it where I liked it. The Evo is fine out of the box, the only appeal to rooting it for me is the ability to ditch Sprint's bloatware.

Well first, I'm 5 foot 2" so the Hero is perfect size for my smaller hands.
and second... I just bought the phone a month and a half ago, and even if I had the money to blow on the Evo or some other phone, I absolutely love this phone. I wont be getting rid of it for at least a year when i get another upgrade, if not keeping it longer than that because I like it so much. They're gonna have to come with something pretty spectacular(not according to critics and other people, but according to me) for me to get rid of this phone... and it better come cheap. I paid 80 bucks for my Hero, brand new from the sprint store. Happy Happy Hippo.

I'm the opposite, 6'5", so the Evo fits me perfect. The Hero looked tiny in my hand!:D

I'm considering getting the Evo in Oct. when I can get an upgrade credit, but keeping my Hero for another year is definitely still a possibility. I'm not sure I'd want a phone as big as the Evo, and my Hero is running fine (rooted and Fresh-ed)... we'll see. I'd imagine by next year there will be at least a couple more next-gen Android phones on Sprint - perhaps w/ a screen somewhere in between the Hero and the Evo (Incredible sized?). I'd still like to stick w/ HTC either way, I've been very impressed w/ the Hero. Plus HTC Android phones seem to attract a good dev community.

Only thing I dislike about 2.1 are the ugly startup screens.

I do miss the little waving android guy. Someone else posted a while back about how to reload the old 1.5 startup but it didn't work for me :(

Fresh 2.1.2 has a really cool dancing android on the boot screen. Not as cool as the 1.5 screen, but yea.

Sixxx, how do I get that? Do I have to be rooted? Sprint did my upgrade so as far as I know I am unable to root now. Thanks.

All the reverse size queens out there (myself included) are going to be disappointed.
Apparently Gingerbread will have system requirements that include a minimum 3.5" screen size.

Not sure how/if that will affect things when it comes to porting via root, but it's a little disappointing to hear that we are going to have to start straddling the tablet line for out phones if we want the latest operating systems since hardware manufacturers will certainly be building to this standard.

I'm becoming more frustrated with all these new requirements on all these phones that I'm really thinking about just returning to my old flip phone with the 35.00 I can talk and text all day long.
As far as the other crap, I have mobile broadband and can just carry my netbook with me if I need directions or anything else.

Yea, you'd have to go back to 2.blahblah.5 and root from there, the rooting tutorial on the All Things Root portion of this board is really easy to follow, just do that.

Just follow the ENTIRE tutorial exactly how it says to, I did that and my phone has worked like a well oiled transformer ever since. I'm not sure if the tutorial for flashing a ROM and/or flashing Fresh is on the same post, but there is one that I followed exactly after I rooted and it went smooth as baby oil down a water slide.

I'm keeping my Hero for the time being. Once the upgrade is available in October, I'll decide which device I want to jump ship for. Right now, it's looking like I'll have an EVO come October.
