Anyone with an EVO try tethering vita PDANet?

Also I would put money on other tethering apps not working with the 4G radio yet. I would love for this to be wrong but I would almost bet that at least as of now, Sprint is the only one with the software needed to bridge a Wimax and Wifi connection on this phone. Not saying others won't do it but don't be surprised if the Sprint option is the only way to share Wimax either wired or wirelessly for the immediate future.

Huh that's like saying the Browser does not work with the 4G radio. If the rest of the phone can access the 4G data connection why can't another tethering app?

Yes, this worked on my Ubuntu machine as well. I'm assuming it works on any computer.

Out of the box, Windows 7 does not recognize the Evo. When I installed HTC Sync, it must have installed some drivers as well, and afterwards Windows 7 could use the internet connection from the Evo. But the HTC Sync program has nothing to do with Internet Sharing.
Can anyone confirm there is a driver needed and/or available for Mac that allows built-in USB tethering to work?

This would totally make my day! Not having to pay the $30 hotspot fee OR buy PDANet....woohoo!

I have no idea. I have never programmed anything like this before. I have no idea if the network management of Android just makes any connection available or if people will need to figure out how the driver works first in order to bridge Wifi and Wimax.

I am eager to be wrong about this prediction but that's all it is. I still haven't heard from anyone that they have used an existing 3rd party (or Android built-in) network sharing app with the Evo's Wimax connection.

This is very relevant to my interests as there is no way I would pay $30/month for this but if Android on Evo can do it out of the box, how could Sprint honestly hope to sell this so-called premium service?

Sprint is trying to sell their Mobile Hotspot service. That is wireless tethering, which is not baked into the OS by HTC. What we have for free is wired tethering.

I would like to address pingpongboss' original question...

Is there any benefit to using a 3rd party app for tethering?

What is the difference between the free Pda version( no secure sites I know) and the native tether?

I still intend to test them both anyway. Who knows, maybe HTC's implementation blows donkeys? And will test via 3G and 4G.

Unless someone beats me to the punch, I'll have a write-up later tonight - probably by about 9PM.

So if the EVO has USB tethering already baked in, what about bluetooth?

If I connect my EVO via bluetooth to my PC will it be able to share the internet?

I have zero interest in doing a wifi hotspot for myself, never mind other people so I wont be doing the sprint deal, but if I can easily hook up to my laptop via bluetooth I'm going to be in hog heaven.

If i have to go with USB thats fine i guess, but i would greatly prefer bluetooth tethering/internet sharing when it comes to a single device.

I assume the wired tethering includes tethering via bluetooth?

What the, I'm sure I answered this. Maybe I didn't press Post or something.

Not you can't do bluetooth. At least not through HTC's Internet Sharing. When Evo is rooted, you can get Wireless Tethering for Root users which allows bluetooth tethering.

I would normally thin kthis is a non issue, as any tethering app should be able to access data the same way.

The thing that makes me wonder about the Evo though, is the way it won't let you do certain things over 3G.

For example, I think I recall that the youtube only works in HD over 4G or WiFi. So is that as a result of the app testing connection speed, or does the phone treat 4G and 3G differently? And also, since you can turn the 4G off seperately, maybe the way you access data from it is different?

I don't know. And I am curious to find out. However, even if someone posts that it worked for them, I am not sure I will be totally conviced yet because they all have the hotspot feature unlocked right now too. I am really wondering if the tethering apps will work while the hotspot feature is not paid for.

If the tethering works over 4G right now though, that is still a positive sign.

You can still do Youtube HQ over 3G, you just have to tell it to, on 4G it just does it

but, yes I agree, will the EVO tether @ 4G speeds?

I cannot test this for you, as my laptop does not have Bluetooth capabilities.

Interesting topic, good to keep an eye on it. if it pans out I'll put it in the All Forum link thread.

Depending on the extent of my findings, I may start a new thread (and will post a link to it in this one as well). That way, if I have a detailed report, it can be on the 1st page of said thread and subsequent discussion/Q&A can go there.

Thank you sir, I will take back a few of the nasty names I called you earlier, when I found out you got one early (unless I didnt say them out loud, in that case nevermind!!!:D)

Just wondering what makes everyone so sure that Sprint won't have a fee for wired tethering when using the included native app? On many previous Sprint phones unless you used a custom ROM, PDAnet, or similar, they knew you were tethering and some people got hit with astronomical data charges.

If they do allow it using the native app that would be amazing to me because it clearly indicates it is included with your plan. Since I have no need for the hotspot functionality that would be an incredible bonus.

If it's so taboo now, explain to me why Sprint didn't rip it out of the 2.1 update for the Hero? They held onto the bloody thing for months and had more than ample time to disable it if they pleased.

Sprint - Software Downloads - Smartphones - HTC Hero with Google

So does anyone know for sure if the Wired tethering is free and you won't get charged a fee if you use it?

YES

thrilled to hear there is wired tethering built right in... I have no need for a wireless hotspot, let alone the ability to connect 8 devices, but it will definitely be nice to connect to my laptop on the go.
