Anyone with an EVO try tethering vita PDANet?

Ok, has anyone confirmed FREE data use for tethering? Just so you know, when on Verizon, you can have a phone with unlimited data plan, but the second you tether via USB or wifi hotspot, you start burning your 5gb tether data limit. When you stop tethering, you go back to your phones unlimited data plan.

Please be SURE that Sprint is not doing the same as verizon, or you will cry when you get your next phone bill, after watching netflix and porn all day.

I have not personally looked into how Sprint is handling this, since I don't yet have my evo, which makes me realy mad right now. My company certifies it for use for our applications for customer use, but we do not yet support it for internal employee use (son of a bitc*!!!).

I am so depressed. I want to just go get one on a new plan and then return it when my company lets me get one from them, but that isn't fair to Sprint and I love Sprint.

GaryColeman,

I installed PDAnet as soon as I got my EVO and it worked fine. Now I can't get it running. When I plug it in I get the "Device attached, click here to connect to PDAnet message" but when I do I get a "Fail to connect to device, please reattach if necessary" message. Did you have similar problems? If so, how corrected? Also, what connection type (charge only, htc sync, disk drive) are you using? Thanks in advance,

-Beha

I am wondering why you guys are interested in PDAnet. Evo comes with HTC's "Internet Sharing" baked into Sense UI. When you connect the phone to a computer, you can do wired tethering instantly, without paying extra or running another app.

Any advantages to PDAnet?

Because it's not working for a lot of us. The HTC/SPRINT way that is.

In fact... If you hit the tech support section, you will see a thread. A bunch of people CALLED HTC and Sprint both directly and HTC is selling people they have to buy a package that includes tethering and Sprints telling people they have to buy the Wifi Package to get Tethering via USB as it's NOT included in the $10 dollar B.S. month EVO "tax".

Some people managed to get it working but the Sprint reps claim Sprint is working to close that loop hole shortly so it will be a premium pay feature.

That said the Sprint rep I spoke to told me Sprints well aware of programs like Easy Tether and PDANet and also working to block those.

Time will tell but it's all B.S. if you ask me.

Wasn't it Dan Hesse who said 4G is cheaper then 3G and there would be no "extra" charges? Also tethering would be included AS a perk of the $10 dollar fee when they finally announced it but now it's not?

Blah.

Oh I almost forgot to address the OP's question. Yes both PDANet and Easy Tether are working. I've tried both, I think I like Easy Tether more.

If your paying PDANet is $30, Easy Tether is $10 but they are on pretty much all the major torrent sites OR both companies offer a stripped down "free" version too.

While I understand the great advantages of rooting...that said I will eventually do it but this thread has made me think of doing it sooner. So my question is after root you get access to wifi tethering etc. BUT is this unlimited data to my laptop or is it still capped at 5g and if so how much internet use should be expected from 5g??? Thanks in advance

Actually, the 5GB limit for cell phones doesn't exist. It exists only for those data cards. You will be fine. I use way more than 5GB a month.

once you have done what you posted... you PC should be connected to the phone's internet access.
Now... just surf till the cows come home. :P
NO limit.
NO fees
NO problem

If you are on 3G.. Your connection will stop if a call comes in. Once you are done with the call, the connection should start back up.. if still connected via USB.

If you are on 4G.. you should still be able to take a phone call and have internet access at the same time (with the USB cable still connected).

good luck

Nope, Got Error 67 on the phone.

what are the main differences between the pay and free versions of both?

I keep getting conflicting reports about Mac compatibility. Some people say it works on Windows, Mac, and Linux. While others are saying that it needs the driver installed with HTC Sync, which is Windows only. While yet others say the proper driver is already built into Mac and Linux. I'll be really happy if native tethering works on Mac.

Just installed pdanet and it is working fine.:D I am using it now. I you go to a link on your phone and download the installer for your mac or pc . here is the link. PdaNet Desktop for Mac

I am so happy this works.:)

I installed EasyTether...man what a great app. Got it up and running within a few minutes.

So the stock Internet Sharing doesn't work? I tried it and nothing happened.

Edit: nvm I just saw one of the previous posts

It's the same "bug" that affects the wifi hotspot feature. Right now both wifi and usb tethering work when you're on 4G even without the $30 fee, but they don't when you're on 3G. Sprint is working to fix this so free 4G tethering is blocked as well.

It looks like PdaNet or EasyTether will be in my future. I'm not going to pay $30/month for something I'll use 2-3 times a month.

I'm in Chicago using PdaNet on 4G, working good up here. PdaNet free version block secured websites, so no signing into facebook and the like.

When I try the native tethering option, I'm getting "Registration Error 67". When I try PDAnet, I get "Error 633: Modem not configured"

Any ideas? :(

From what I gather from here, other forums, and the sprint rep that I spoke to, the native tether only works if you have the hotspot add on.

I have used PDAnet for years on other devices starting with a Treo300. Usually one of the first apps I purchase for a new phone. Installed it on the EVO, paid my $18 (on sale at the moment for the EVO launch) and it works great, just like it did under WinMo and Palm.

How did you do it? I've got the mac desktop client installed, and pdanet free version installed on the phone. USB debugging is on, PDAnet is turned on. All other internet connections on my macbook pro are off. I plug the phone into the macbook's USB and nothing happens. If I click the PDAnet icon in my toolbar and click "connect", it just says "iphone not attached".

i kept having the error 67 message every time i connected the evo to the computer via the usb cable. once i was able to connect the cable to the computer without that message, i was golden.

the trick for me was to go into phone settings, wireless and networks, and uncheck "Internet sharing". When Internet Sharing is unchecked, i am able to get a "mobile network" connection. Once i got that, i was able to tether via the PDANet software.

I thought i would never get away from the error 67 message, but once i did, i was good to go.

I'm curious if anybody has tried tethering with PDANet? I'll be new to Android and not sure if PDANet works on the EVO but I thought I'd ask. Thanks!

Evo 4G in Austin and my first Android phone. My wife works from home and the day we got my Evo (hers is on the way) our internet went down. She was able to work all day with the Evo tethered via PDAnet to her laptop(WinXP) and it never went down once. She was able to run her VOIP phone, check email. She said it was as fast as our cable based internet. I switched from iPhone and I have to say the ability to do that sold it for me. I was very impressed. I later tried it out on my desktop (Win7) with only one 4G bar and it was very fast.

So, at $18 currently, PDAnet has to be the best deal going, right?

One. Single. Charge.

Compared to $30/month or $360/yr - $720/2yr it looks like a massive bargain for 2.2, no?

Yes, there's rooted, but that's not what I'm asking.

You can also try EasyTether. It's in the market too. It's $10 ($9.99) one time fee. I'm using it now and loving it. Same as PDAnet, you need to download the software to your PC.

PDAnet worked great for me this weekend. I was traveling and needed to get on the internet. Miami's airport charges for Wifi. I connected the Evo to my laptop and was good to go. Make sure USB debugging is on. You'll get the error if not....

Great app and definitely worth the $$$.....
